Modifying your car to produce more torque is not new. However, the modification process is wildly new in the electric car era. Upgrading doesn’t involve any physical changes to the car and doesn’t require expertise. Getting more torque can be as simple as downloading software.
Ford made a strange offer in a strange place this week, taking to LinkedIn to announce an upgrade package for 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT owners.
The new Performance Package adds 100 lb-ft of torque. The Mach-E GT makes 480 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque from the factory. With the Performance Package, horsepower stays the same, but torque jumps to 700 lb-ft.

According to Ford, boosting the torque helps the SUV scoot from zero to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds, which is faster than the Tesla Model Y Performance and the Porsche Macan 4 Electric.
The upgrade costs $995; owners can buy it via the FordPass app. New buyers can select it at purchase.
This modification isn’t the first time we’ve seen an automaker use programming to unlock more power for a fee. Polestar has made a similar offer twice. Mercedes-Benz does it as a recurring subscription.
It won’t likely be the last. Ford Integrated Services General Manager Chet Dhruna, announcing the package, said the company is “continuing to think about how we can make it even easier to access features and continue to make the ownership experience better over time.”
