When I travel in my motorhome, one of my essential van life gadgets HAS to be my motorhome reversing camera.

Seriously, if that broke I’d be screwed.

When you’re driving a vehicle like a motorhome, or even a campervan, you NEED good visibility for parking and also for seeing what’s going on around you.

So Which Reversing Camera is Best?

Good question! We’ve reviewed the top motorhome and campervan reversing cameras on the market. Each have pros and cons and are good in different situations.

Why a Motorhome Reversing Camera is a Good Idea

A reversing camera is a fantastic addition to any motorhome for many reasons, including:

Safety

A reversing camera increases safety whilst you’re driving. It allows you to see directly behind you (where your mirrors can’t see).

This is especially important when driving in heavy rain. Many motorcyclists will tuck in behind big vehicles like motorhomes in bad weather. If you know they are there, you can give plenty of warning that you are going to brake or change lanes.

Also, if you want to reverse, it’s essential to use your reversing camera to check your blind spots and make sure there is no vehicle or person behind you.

Parking is easier

Parking a motorhome can be tricky; it’s one of the jobs most people hate most about motorhoming. However, a reversing camera makes it SO MUCH EASIER. You can easily see what’s around you and negotiate it.

Fewer Bumps and Scratches on Your Motorhome

Bumps and scratches on the back of a motorhome are commonplace, especially when reversing. Adding a reversing camera to your van can greatly reduce the odds of damage occuring.

Towing

If, like us, you tow a trailer with your motorhome, having a dual-aspect reversing camera is SO useful. You can quickly check the trailer and connection and make sure everything is ok as you’re driving, without needing to pull over and check every time you hear a weird noise.

Field of View

A crucial aspect of any reversing camera is the field of view. This means how wide an angle you can see on your screen from the camera.

A camera with too narrow a field of view can make reversing difficult, but too wide can be overwhelming and distracting.

Display Size

The display unit for your reversing camera significantly influences how useful the device is for backing up. A small display screen can be hard to see, especially if you have eyesight problems.

Of course, a large display size can also be distracting when driving the vehicle.

You also need to consider where you will put the display screen inside the cab and how it will be mounted.

Wired or wireless reversing camera system?

Reversing cameras fall into two categories- wired or wireless.

Both will need installation, but the amount of work which needs doing will depend on which system you buy.

Wireless is much easier to install in your camper, but can have issues with signal quality if fitted incorrectly.

Wired has much better picture quality, but a wire will need to be run from the rear view camera to the cab and display screen.

Some reversing cameras require professional installation, which of course, drives up the cost of getting the camera.

Cost is always a factor when buying any motorhome accessory. The ‘best’ is not always the most expensive, especially if you only use your motorhome occasionally.

How to Install a Reversing Camera on a Motorhome

Once you’ve chosen which reversing camera suits your needs best, you need to install it.

Are you comfortable with electronics? Will you install it yourself? Or will you decide to take your motorhome to a garage for the installation job?

After figuring out who will put the device in place, you need to consider some things when deciding where to put it.

Removing Blind Spots

One of the most significant advantages of installing a reversing camera is removing the blind spots from your vehicle.

However, if you do not get the placement right of your camera, you could still have some blind-spots. For instance, if the camera is placed too high, you could miss objects that are close to the vehicle. This is where having a dual-aspect reversing camera makes so much sense.

Finding the Best Angle

Photography is all about angles. Your reversing camera is similar. If you get the angle wrong, you might get an unclear picture, or you could have a hard time seeing during certain times of the day as sunlight or rain could interfere with the image.

So, where Should a Reversing Camera be Placed?

A reversing camera should be placed at the rear of your vehicle. Some cameras can be installed onto your number plate, offering a view directly behind you, but if you tow a trailer it will become useless.

Personally, I’ve fitted all my reversing cameras high up, to achieve a wider field of view behind, and used a downward camera to see directly below. This is also really useful when you’re parking up in a campsite and are trying to see the little white peg!
