AI Platform for Teaching American Sign Language


American Sign Language is the third most prevalent language in the United States — but there are vastly fewer AI tools developed with ASL data than data representing the country’s most common languages, English and Spanish.

NVIDIA, the American Society for Deaf Children and creative agency Hello Monday are helping close this gap with Signs, an interactive web platform built to support ASL learning and the development of accessible AI applications.

Sign language learners can access the platform’s validated library of ASL signs to expand their vocabulary with the help of a 3D avatar that demonstrates signs — and use an AI tool that analyzes webcam footage to receive real-time feedback on their signing. Signers of any skill level can contribute by signing specific words to help build an open-source video dataset for ASL.

The dataset — which NVIDIA aims to grow to 400,000 video clips representing 1,000 signed words — is being validated by fluent ASL users and interpreters to ensure the accuracy of each sign, resulting in a high-quality visual dictionary and teaching tool.

“Most deaf children are born to hearing parents. Giving family members accessible tools like Signs to start learning ASL early enables them to open an effective communication channel with children as young as six to eight months old,” said Cheri Dowling, executive director of the American Society for Deaf Children. “And knowing that professional ASL teachers have validated all the vocabulary on the platform, users can be confident in what they’re learning.”

NVIDIA teams plan to use this dataset to further develop AI applications that break down communication barriers between the deaf and hearing communities. The data is slated to be available to the public as a resource for building accessible technologies including AI agents, digital human applications and video conferencing tools. It could also be used to enhance Signs and enable ASL platforms across the ecosystem with real-time, AI-powered support and feedback.

Supporting ASL Education, Exploring Language Nuance

During the data collection phase, Signs already provides a powerful platform for ASL language acquisition, offering opportunities for individuals to learn and practice an initial set of 100 signs so they can more effectively communicate with friends or family members who use ASL.

“The Signs learning platform could help families with deaf children quickly search for a specific word and see how to make the corresponding sign. It’s a tool that can help support their everyday use of ASL outside of a more formal class,” Dowling said. “I see both kids and parents exploring it — and I think they could play with it together.”person signing the word "vegetable" using Signs AI platform

While Signs currently focuses on hand movements and finger positions for each sign, ASL also incorporates facial expressions and head movements to convey meaning. The team behind Signs is exploring how these non-manual signals can be tracked and integrated in future versions of the platform.

They’re also investigating how other nuances, like regional variations and slang terms, can be represented in Signs to enrich its ASL database — and working with researchers at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Center for Accessibility and Inclusion Research to evaluate and further improve the user experience of the Signs platform for deaf and hard-of-hearing users.

“Improving ASL accessibility is an ongoing effort,” said Anders Jessen, founding partner of Hello Monday/DEPT, which built the Signs web platform and previously worked with the American Society for Deaf Children on Fingerspelling.xyz, an application that taught users the ASL alphabet. “Signs can serve the need for advanced AI tools that help transcend communication barriers between the deaf and hearing communities.”

The dataset behind Signs is planned for release later this year.

In his hands, Pim Koeslag holds what might be the most awe-inspiring watch I’ve ever seen in person. I mean, it quite literally compresses the cosmos into something that fits on your wrist. From Mercury’s 88-day dash around the sun to Neptune’s leisurely 164-year orbit, the solar system is meticulously represented in miniature, set against a hand-painted backdrop inspired by images from the James Webb Telescope.

The Grand Planetarium Eccentric Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition is, as its name entails, a watch commemorating Sincere’s 70th anniversary and Christian van der Klaauw’s 50th anniversary. Given that Sincere was one of Koeslag’s first customers after he acquired Christiaan Van Der Klaauw (CVDK), it seems only fitting to celebrate this enduring partnership.

“I get a little emotional seeing this beautiful piece,” Koeslag reveals, sitting across from me.

As a master watchmaker turned CEO, he acknowledges the tug-of-war between his passion for watchmaking and the demands of running a company. This tension feels particularly truthful for someone whose genuine love for the craft feels so pure that it’s palpable even in a brief conversation. In just 24 minutes, we delve into this dynamic, the future of the company, and what might very well be the magnum opus of Christian van der Klaauw.

Can you explain the new Grand Planetarium Eccentric Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition watch? What was the creative vision and inspiration behind it?

This watch is based on our 50th-anniversary celebration. Christian van der Klaauw established the company in 1974, initially specialising in astronomical world clocks. By 1996, he had created his first wristwatch, miniaturising astronomical mechanisms to fit within a wristwatch. In 1999, he made the world’s smallest mechanical planetarium in a wristwatch.

For this 50th anniversary, we developed the Grand Planetarium Eccentric, a highly sophisticated planetarium watch featuring all eight planets of the solar system orbiting the sun. For example, Mercury’s sphere will orbit once every 88 days, Venus in 224 days, Earth in a year, and Neptune, the slowest, takes 164 years to complete one orbit on the watch.

What makes this model extraordinary is that the planetary orbits are eccentric — just like in reality, they don’t follow perfect circles, reflecting real-life orbital mechanics. The dial was hand-painted by a Geneva-based miniature painter, inspired by an early prototype of Christian’s, which was itself influenced by imagery from the James Webb Telescope.

The painting process involves nine separate components assembled after painting. The planets are hand-painted as well, making this not just a technical marvel but also an artistic masterpiece.

The moons on the watch are fascinating. Could you tell us more?

We included moons for Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn. While Saturn has 92 moons and Jupiter has 145, we could only include a select few due to space constraints.

As CEO and a master watchmaker, how personally involved were you in the creation of the Grand Planetarium Eccentric Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition?

Very much involved. I was deeply engaged in every aspect of the creative process, from prototyping to final assembly. I wish I could only do that. But unfortunately, after making a watch, you have to sell it as well and run the company.

Christian sketched initial designs by hand, which we digitised into 3D CAD models. I personally built the prototypes and collaborated with Sincere’s management to refine the design, ensuring it honoured Christian’s vision while incorporating our craftsmanship.

What’s next for the brand? Any upcoming projects?

This watch was a major milestone, but we’re continuously innovating. Our focus remains on becoming the world leader in astronomical watches. We really want to do scientific research and make a watch as perfect and as close to the real thing as possible, essentially blending scientific research with high craftsmanship. Future models will push the boundaries of what’s possible in astronomical watchmaking.

How do you see the future of astronomical watchmaking evolving, and how does the Grand Planetarium Eccentric contribute to that vision?

I think this watch is already that next evolution. It’s the most accurate depiction of the solar system in a wristwatch, complete with eccentric orbits and all planets. The more in-depth you get in astronomy, the more questions you’ll have and the more ideas pop up for new models. If we write them all down, we’ll have new ideas for the next 50 years.

Was it difficult adjusting from being a watchmaker to a CEO?

It happened gradually. My journey began as a watchmaker in Geneva, then as a technical director, and eventually CEO. Becoming an entrepreneur was a bigger shift — it meant taking complete responsibility for the company.

But I think I love this combination because sometimes your head is so full of emails, questions, financial stuff, or press discussions. You just want to sit behind the bench and build something. Watchmaking is really peaceful, it’s therapeutic.

What excites you most about this release?

This watch symbolises our partnership with Sincere and our commitment to excellence. Sincere was one of my first customers when I acquired the company, and they believed in the company right away.

It’s the most complicated and refined piece we’ve ever made, blending artistry, technique, and emotion. It’s very, very special. I even get a little emotional seeing this beautiful piece.

Would you classify this piece as the magnum opus of Christian Van De Klaauw?

Yeah, definitely. It’s as complicated as it gets; from the craftsmanship to the technique, it’s everything.

When the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG debuted, they represented the pinnacle of AMG performance within the SL-Class lineup. As part of the sixth-generation R231 SL-Class, these high-performance grand tourers aimed to blend raw power, cutting-edge technology, and open-top luxury in a way only AMG could deliver.

Building upon the legacy of their predecessors, these models redefined what it meant to drive an AMG roadster, offering brutal acceleration, aggressive styling, and an opulent cabin, all while maintaining the comfort and usability expected from the SL nameplate.

At the heart of the SL63 AMG lies a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8, delivering an output of 537 hp and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque in its standard form. However, with the optional AMG Performance Package, power was increased to 564 hp and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft), pushing the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds.

Meanwhile, the SL65 AMG took performance to another level, boasting a hand-built 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 producing 630 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Despite its added weight over the SL63, the SL65 AMG’s immense torque allowed for effortless acceleration, making it one of the most powerful grand tourers of its time.

In terms of styling, the SL63 and SL65 AMG featured a wide, muscular stance, larger air intakes, and AMG-specific bodywork that signaled their high-performance pedigree. The “twin-blade” front grille, a sculpted hood with power domes, and quad exhaust outlets made it clear these were no ordinary SL-Class roadsters. Carbon-fiber elements, available as an option, further enhanced their dynamic presence.

Inside, the AMG Performance seats were upholstered in premium Nappa leather, providing exceptional support and comfort. The three-spoke AMG steering wheel, aluminum shift paddles, and a fully digital instrument cluster reinforced the car’s driver-focused nature. Advanced technology, including Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system, optional Bang & Olufsen premium audio, and AMG-specific drive modes.

Throughout their production, the Mercedes-AMG SL63 and SL65 found themselves competing against some of the most formidable grand tourers in the segment. Rivals included the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante, Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible, and Jaguar F-Type SVR, as well as the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet.

Despite the competition, the SL AMG models stood apart with their brutal torque delivery, AMG-specific performance tuning, and a level of open-top luxury unmatched in the segment.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG marked the debut of the R231 generation, featuring a lighter aluminum chassis for improved agility and efficiency. 

Standard features on both models included AMG sports suspension, LED daytime running lights, and the optional MAGIC SKY CONTROL panoramic roof. The SL63 AMG came with AMG sports seats, while the SL65 AMG took luxury further with Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery in a diamond pattern, carbon-fiber trim, and an IWC-design analogue clock.

For those seeking additional performance, the SL63 AMG offered the AMG Performance Package, increasing power, adding a limited-slip differential, and featuring carbon fiber accents and red brake calipers. 

The SL65 AMG remained the more exclusive option, with illuminated AMG door sills, a 360 km/h speedometer, and AMG-specific interior detailing. The SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary Edition, limited to 45 units, featured a designo magno graphite exterior, black chrome AMG exhaust tips, forged multi-spoke wheels, and bespoke designo Exclusive STYLE leather in grey pearl/ginger beige, making it one of the most desirable models in the lineup.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG had a starting price of $140,440, and the 2012 SL65 AMG, introduced as a 2013 model, had a starting price of $214,445.

In 2013, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG continued with their existing powertrains and core features, introducing subtle enhancements to offer buyers increased customization and performance options. 

Additionally, the infotainment system received software updates, improving user interface responsiveness and expanding functionality. 

The SL65 AMG remained fairly unchanged, with an expanded palette of exterior colors, including options like Shadow Grey (matte finish), Dolomite Brown, Mars Red, Steel Grey, Iridium Silver, Palladium Silver, Pearl Beige, Diamond White, and Lunar Bluel. 

For enhanced braking performance, an optional AMG Carbon Ceramic Braking System was introduced, providing superior stopping power and reduced fade during high-performance driving. 

In 2013, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG had a starting price of $146,705, while the SL65 AMG started at $212,240.

In 2014, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG received a performance upgrade, increasing its power output to 577 hp. 

The AMG Performance Package, previously an optional upgrade, became standard equipment, enhancing driving dynamics with improved power delivery and handling. 

Additional refinements included a new AMG steering wheel design and an updated COMAND infotainment system, improving both driver engagement and connectivity. 

Meanwhile, the SL65 AMG remained unchanged.

In 2014, the starting price for the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG was $147,300, while the SL65 AMG began at $214,500.

In 2015, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG gained new technology and customization options. The Driver Assistance Package was introduced as an option, adding adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. 

New alloy wheel designs and additional interior upholstery choices provided more ways to personalize the car. The SL65 AMG saw fewer changes, but the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound system, previously an option, became standard. A Night Package was introduced, adding black exterior accents for a more aggressive look.

In 2015, the starting price for the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG was $148,050, while the SL65 AMG began at $215,250. 

2016 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG

In 2016, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG received a mid-cycle facelift for the 2017 model year. 

The front end was redesigned with a new grille, larger side vents, and adaptive LED headlights. Both the front and rear bumpers were updated for a more aggressive look. 

The Vario-roof hardtop was improved, allowing operation at speeds up to 40 km/h without manual intervention. The driver assistance systems were upgraded, and Active Body Control (ABC) with Curve Tilting became an option. 

When it comes to the engine, the SL63 AMG retained its 577 hp 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8, while the SL65 AMG continued with its 621 hp 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12.

In 2016, the starting price for the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG was $149,700, while the SL65 AMG began at $217,550.

In 2017, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG received updates to enhance driver experience and customization. The SL63 AMG now included the Driver Assistance Package as standard, offering features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. 

Additionally, new interior trim options and a revised AMG Performance exhaust system were introduced, allowing for personalized aesthetics and improved acoustics.

The SL65 AMG featured a new AMG Performance steering wheel with DINAMICA inserts, providing enhanced grip and a sportier feel. To further personalize the vehicle, Mercedes-Benz expanded the designo paint finishes, offering unique colors such as designo Selenite Grey Magno and Brilliant Blue. 

Interior customization was also enhanced with options like the designo Deep White Leather Package, featuring designo Deep White Leather Upholstery. These additions allowed owners to tailor their SL65 AMG to their individual tastes.

In 2017, the starting price for the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG was $151,350, while the SL65 AMG began at $219,850.

In 2018, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG remained unchanged. The SL65 AMG entered its final production year with no major updates. 

Production ended mid-year, making 2018 models rarer than previous years.

In 2018, the starting price for the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG was $152,850, while the SL65 AMG began at $222,000.

In 2019, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG remained in production with no major updates. The SL65 AMG was discontinued after the 2018 model year, marking the end of the V12-powered SL lineup.

Owners of the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG R231 generation have reported several common issues that can lead to expensive repairs. In addition, it is essential to keep in mind that all cars can have issues and it is crucial to perform a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) from an authorized dealer or experienced independent mechanic to reveal all issues.

Active Body Control (ABC) System: Some owners have expressed concerns about the long-term reliability of the ABC suspension system, noting potential failures in components such as struts and pumps.

Camshaft Position Sensors and Magnetic Adjusters: The design of these components can lead to oil wicking into the wiring harness, potentially damaging engine electronics. Installing sacrificial harnesses can prevent this issue.

Retractable Hardtop Mechanism: Issues with the power-operated retractable hardtop have been reported, including malfunctioning roof mechanisms, faulty sensors, or problems with the hydraulic system, leading to slow or incomplete roof operation.

Airbag Module Issue (Recall No. PRA 2014/14242)

In August 2014, a recall was issued for vehicles available from March 1, 2014, to May 30, 2014. The front passenger side dash-mounted airbag module may break upon deployment during an accident, potentially causing injury to occupants. 

2018 to 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG vehicles

Front Passenger Airbag Seam Issue (Recall No. RC2731)

In November 2019, a recall was announced for vehicles sold between June 25, 2018, and January 14, 2019. The front passenger airbag may not have been sewn correctly, which could cause the seam to tear during deployment, altering the restraint effect and increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger.

This recall pertains to a potential malfunction in the front passenger airbag, which may have been improperly sewn, allowing the seam to tear during deployment and increasing the risk of injury.

Over time, the bolt connection at the front-left mounting point on the rear axle carrier casting may fail, possibly affecting the vehicle’s handling.

Communication Module Software Issue (Recall No. 2021020025)

The software design of the communication module may fail to communicate the correct vehicle location for the emergency call system (eCall) in the event of a crash.

Nikola announced on Wednesday that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, joining a growing list of highly publicized EV startups that have faced a similar fate in recent years, including Lordstown Motors, Fisker, and Canoo.

Founded in 2014, Nikola stated that it is seeking approval for the sale of its assets and will continue operating to support existing customers and certain hydrogen-fueling operations through the end of March. Among its assets is approximately $47 million in cash on hand.

Nikola has yet to announce its Q4 2024 financial results, but in a filing last December, it reported a net loss of $481.2 million for the first nine months of that year.

CEO Steve Girsky said in a statement that the company had attempted to raise capital and reduce its debt in recent months, but ultimately, the board determined that filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy was the best possible outcome.

Nikola was once considered one of the more promising EV startups. Initially, the company focused on battery-powered electric trucks before transitioning to hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks, along with a hydrogen fueling operation called Hyla. There was also a partnership with General Motors that included a plan to build a hydrogen pickup truck dubbed the Badger.

However, things took a turn for the worse in 2020 when the DOJ and SEC began investigating Nikola over fraud allegations brought by investment firm Hindenburg Research. Around that time, Nikola’s original CEO and founder, Trevor Milton, stepped down from the company. He was later found guilty of securities and wire fraud, resulting in a four-year prison sentence, while the company reached a settlement with the SEC. Additionally, in 2023, the company faced vehicle fires and a subsequent recall.

Nikola’s current share price values the company at less than $50 million—a steep decline from the $27 billion valuation it held in 2020 during the EV startup boom, when it was valued more than Ford.

Mercedes-Benz has made some of its electric vehicles (EVs) look dramatically different from its combustion-powered model, but now it’s moving away from this strategy.

“Going forward a coherent design language will be used across the entire portfolio,” the company said in releasing its annual report for 2024.

“BEV and electrified high-tech ICE models will exploit their respective strengths, without sacrificing space, elegance, convenience or efficiency.”

Mercedes-Benz will launch a new CLA small sedan with available electric power this year, and has confirmed electric versions of the mid-sized GLC SUV and C-Class sedan are also in the pipeline.

The company’s CEO, Ola Källenius, also told Autocar last year there “will be two S-Classes in the future – ICE and electric”, styled similarly to each other if reportedly using different platforms.

You’ll notice the familiar names. Not only is Mercedes-Benz moving away from some of its more controversial EV design elements, it’s also moving away from its EQ naming strategy.

The electric G-Class debuted without the expected EQG nameplate, instead being called the G580 with EQ Technology.

The CLA, set to be revealed imminently, is expected to wear the same nameplate regardless of whether it’s powered by a combustion engine or an electric powertrain. Spy shots have shown there’s little visual difference between the two different powertrain types.

That’s similar to current Mercedes-Benz EVs like the EQA and EQB SUVs, which look much like the combustion-powered vehicles they’re based on, apart from unique front- and rear-end styling.

However, Mercedes-Benz vehicles based on the German carmaker’s dedicated Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) look vastly different from their combustion counterparts.

The EQE sedan and EQS liftback are characterised by their dramatic wedge profile but rounded styling details, while the EQE SUV and EQS SUV are much more rounded than the unrelated GLE and GLS SUVs.

In contrast, arch-rival BMW – with the exception of its iX – makes all of its EVs look more or less identical to their combustion-powered counterparts.

You need only look at sales results to see which approach appears to be working better. Last year in Australia, BMW sold 7787 EVs, up 160.4 per cent on 2023’s figure.

Mercedes-Benz sold 2603 EVs, down 18.4 per cent, despite having more EVs (12 versus 7) including various vans and people movers.

Globally, sales of EVs from the Mercedes-Benz Cars division fell in 2024 by 23.1 per cent compared to the year before, for a total of 185,059 sales.

Combined with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), they accounted for 18.5 per cent of total division sales volume, down from 19.7 per cent in the previous year. This drop would have been worse were it not for a 13.2 per cent increase in PHEV sales.

    EQS facelift

Sales of electric Mercedes-Benz Vans products fell 13.9 per cent in 2024 to 19,516 units, though still sat at five per cent of total volume for the commercial vehicle division.

BMW, in contrast, sold 368,523 EVs – not including electric Mini and Rolls-Royce models – which was an improvement of 11.6 per cent on the previous year.

Of Mercedes-Benz’s more polarising EVs, the EQS is getting an update this year giving it more S-Class-style design cues. This update has yet to be locked in for Australia.

It’s unclear if its platform-mates will get similar visual tweaks.

Mercedes-Benz announced last year it would delay its target for EVs to account for 50 per cent of its global vehicle sales, from 2025 to 2030.

However, there is yet another caveat, with the brand now including sales of plug-in hybrids – which can drive limited distances on solely electric power – in its 2030 target.

Mercedes-Benz had previously announced its intention to go fully electric by 2030, but only in markets which supported the move, without announcing specific regions where it planned to phase out petrol and diesel cars.

With five openings in 2025, Rosewood has chosen the tropical islands of Okinawa for its Japan debut.  The 55-suites only Rosewood Miyakojima on the largest island in the Miyakojima cluster is designed with local materials by Dutch architecture firm Studio Piet-Boon and Japanese studio Mitsubishi Jisho Sekki. Four different F&B concepts affording unrivalled views of soft sand and turquoise sea will leave guests spoiled for choice. 

Japan: Risonare Shimonoseki

Scheduled to open in the south of Japan in Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s main islands this December, Risonare Shimonoseki will command unparalleled panoramas of both sunset and sunrise. Taking advantage of its location on the waterfront, all 187 rooms will afford ocean views of the Kanmon Strait and passing ships. To draw guests closer to the Kanmon Strait for a deeper sense of place, the hotel will have an infinity pool filled with seawater pumped from underground. 

Taiwan: Capella Taipei

The opening of the 86-key Capella Taipei in the Songshan district of Taipei  this winter is highly anticipated as it is the first international luxury hotel to be launched in the Taiwanese capital since the pandemic. Designed by Andre Fu to be a “modern mansion”, the hotel offers bon vivants well-curated experiences by their signature Capella Culturists, and also four F & B concepts from French-inspired to Japanese.

Thailand: Aman Nai Lert Bangkok

After its successful opening in New York in 2022, Aman’s latest hotel opening in Bangkok is a much anticipated  one. Featuring 52 suites, the Aman Nai Lert Bangkok will boast state-of-the-art Aman wellness facilities and well curated dining and recreational options including a jazz bar. Designed by Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston, the hotel’s interiors will evoke elements of Thai culture while staying true to the Aman’s signature design aesthetics of clean lines and neutrals. 

Indonesia: Regent Bali Canggu

Located near Echo Beach in Canggu, Bali, the Regent Bali Canggu designed by WATG occupies prime position on a coveted stretch of Canggu coastline that is popular with surfers. Eschewing the traditional Balinese design theme that is common among many Bali villas, this 150-key resort takes cues from contemporary Indonesian fashion and culture for its interiors. Guests can take their pick among five restaurants and bars for F&B, but an upgrade to a Regent Club accommodation means access to a well-appointed private lounge as well.

Come spring, Casina Cinquepozzi, an 18th century manor reimagined into a hotel with 55 keys on a 16 ha estate in Puglia, Italy, is likely to beckon creatives and the well-travelled who want to stay under the tourist radar. Guests will love the personal touches in the interiors by the current owners, a jewellery designer and her partner who had dedicated two years to restoring the house. Guests will get to sip the owner’s own organic rosé stash from their pigsty-turned-wine cellar alongside delicious nosh created by guest chefs and other creatives who will be hosted in an on-site artist residence flat.

Not quite a hotel in the traditional sense, but this locomotive accommodation will appeal to travellers who are seduced by the romance of train travel. Debuting in the third quarter, the Britannic Explorer, a Belmond train, will take slow travel seekers through the vast, rolling landscapes of Great Britain in three routes: Cornwall, Wales and The Lake District. In the day, join guided tours of  renowned Hauser & Wirth Somerset gallery and trek through bucolic Wales. At sunset, imbibe cocktails and spirits inspired by Victorian apothecaries.

MIDDLE EAST

United Arab Emirates: Lux* Al Jabal

Lux* Al Jabal, one of two inaugural Lux* hotel launches in Sharjah, UAE, in the fourth quarter, will boast views of the Gulf Oman and jagged mountains, access to a private beach, a destination spa and world-class dining options. Mercedes-Benz confirms electric E-Class, C-Class, and GLC-Class by 2027


  • The 2026 CLA-Class will be offered as a full battery electric vehicle and a mild-hybrid

Mercedes-Benz will launch all-electric versions of three of its most popular models within the next two years.

During a presentation of its 2024 financial results Thursday, the automaker said the C-Class and E-Class sedans, as well as the GLC-Class crossover, would get all-electric derivatives as part of a new-product push that will see “dozens” of new or refreshed models launch globally by 2027.

That rollout starts later this year with the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class compact, which will be offered with all-electric and 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrains. The CLA EV is slated to debut numerous improvements over current-generation Mercedes EVs, including an 800-volt electrical architecture and a more clever regenerative braking system.

Those improvements will be shared with other compact models based on the new CLA’s Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA). They’ll likely be among the other models debuting over the next couple years, adding different body styles alongside the CLA, which is expected to remain a coupe-like sedan similar to the current generation.

While Mercedes’ current strategy centers on dedicated electric models (the EQB compact crossover being a notable exception), the CLA EV marks a shift toward offering the same vehicle with multiple powertrains—one that appears to be accelerating with the forthcoming C-Class, E-Class, and GLC-Class EVs.

Mercedes also promised “a string of launches” for its AMG performance division that will include the first EVs based on the new AMG.EA dedicated architecture. The first of these performance EVs, a fastback sedan that could replace the current AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, is scheduled to arrive this year, with an AMG electric SUV following sometime after that.

And the first of Mercedes’ next-generation electric vans is scheduled to launch in 2026. They’ll be based on yet another new platform, dubbed Van.EA. Mercedes recently reversed course and said it would also develop new combustion vans based on a companion platform as well.

Not all of Mercedes’ new and refreshed models will be electric, though. The automaker also confirmed a substantial update for its flagship S-Class sedan for next year, but didn’t mention an electric version. And last year the automaker delayed an EV sales target that would have seen it go all-electric (in at least some markets) by 2030, saying internal-combustion engines would stick around well into the next decade.

  • Pilot tests of self-driving cars continue to expand, to other vehicles and in other cities
  • Most new cars can be equipped with Level 2 driver-assist features on the SAE’s self-driving scale of Level 0 to Level 5 

Maybe you’ve seen them: An electric car topped with a hat of roving cameras, sensors, and lidar. Maybe you’ve ridden in them, in select cities such as San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles: a driverless taxi obeying the rules of the road but unable yet to go on the highway.

Google’s Waymo continues to expand, in both cities and vehicle types. It’s evolving from the Jaguar I-Pace crossover and Chrysler Pacifica minivan into offerings ranging from the Hyundai Ioniq 5 to Zeekr, the EV brand owned by Chinese conglomerate Geely. Waymo is also expanding not just into Austin, Texas, and tiptoeing into other U.S. cities, it’s stepping into Tokyo, Japan. 

Like most evolutionary technologies, however, much more is promised than delivered. Tesla claims it will have a two-door robotaxi due “before 2027,” but that seems highly unlikely. In December 2024, GM killed its Cruise robotaxi project after dumping $10 billion in the startup it acquired in 2016. 

To be clear, there are no self-driving cars you can buy today. Yet automakers continue to develop hands-free driving systems that offer some degree of autonomy. That was one benefit of GM’s investment in Cruise. To date, GM’s Super Cruise ranks highest among the handful of hands-free driving systems available on limited highways in the U.S. 

What is the difference between self-driving cars, hands-free autonomous systems, and all the goofy names automakers slap on their advanced driver-assist systems? We’re glad we asked.  

While the levels of semi-autonomous driving sophistication can vary significantly from one brand to another, the defined bounds of those levels are relatively set.

In 2014, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) adopted a common taxonomy for self-driving cars that defined six levels—from Level 0 to Level 5—of automated driving. The boundaries are pretty obvious. Level 0 was no assistance and Level 5 was fully autonomous. The SAE updated their tiers in 2021, and while Level 5 remains fully autonomous, Level 0 has changed to include some active safety features that have become commonplace if not standard in the last few years, such as automatic emergency braking.

Fun fact: Did you know that the first autonomous driving feature debuted in 1958? The 1958 Chrysler Imperial was the first car to have cruise control, originally dubbed “Auto-Pilot.” Tesla co-opted it more than a half-century later, and it’s still a misnomer, as is the EV brand’s Full Self-Driving.

That’s why it’s important for car shoppers, automakers, and their dealers and marketing departments recognize the six distinct levels as put forth by the SAE. The big jump comes from Level 2 to Level 3, and automakers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, GM, and even Honda ready their vehicles for Level 3 tech. 

Level 0: No self-driving functions at all. Drivers are responsible for controlling steering, throttle, and braking. They’re also responsible for monitoring everything around the car. Level 0 includes features that provide warnings and temporary assistance, including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, and lane-departure warnings. The vast majority of cars on the road today fall into this category.

Level 1: Some driver assistance is allowed. In cars equipped with Level 1 automation, the car can take control of the steering or the throttle/brake in certain situations, but it relies on the driver to immediately take over if those systems fail. Many newer cars are equipped with adaptive cruise control that can slow the car to a stop, which falls into this category. Some cars are equipped with active lane control (also known as lane-departure prevention) systems that allow for limited periods of hands-off driving.

Level 2: More driver assistance. Level 2 automation differs from Level 1 in how many systems are used to assist drivers, but the two levels are identical in requiring drivers to immediately take over if those systems fail or stop operating. Level 2 allows for the use of adaptive cruise control and active lane control at the same time. Several automakers offer systems that will take control of the throttle/brake and steering for a limited time, but require driver interaction. If the driver doesn’t take over, those systems stop, usually with several warnings to the driver. Some of today’s most sophisticated systems can handle all the controls at full speed on the highway but still require the driver to monitor the road ahead. The best of them is GM’s Super Cruise. Ford’s Bluecruise and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving also qualify here.

Level 3: Level 3 consists of conditional automation. Level 3 automation can handle all driving situations in certain situations and constantly monitors the road, unlike Level 2 cars. Level 3 still requires a driver to take over in certain situations, so the car must come with a steering wheel and gas and brake pedals. Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot system is considered Level 3 up to 59 mph, but it’s allowed only on select highways in California and Nevada. Honda has a Level 3 system operational in Japan, but the brand is still assessing how to overcome state-by-state regulatory issues in the U.S. BMW and Stellantis have both promised Level 3 systems for the U.S.  

Level 4: Nearly self-driving. Most automakers are targeting Level 4 automation for several reasons. First, it’s likely to be cheaper because Level 4 self-driving cars may not require driver controls such as a steering wheel, throttle, or brake pedals—building a car with redundant controls for both the driver and autonomous systems would be costly and complicated. Second, Level 4 differs from Level 3 primarily because it doesn’t require human intervention if self-driving systems fail, as in the Waymo cars. 

Level 5: Fully self-driving. This may seem like a logical small step from Level 4, but for most automakers, Level 5 autonomy is a giant leap for self-driving cars. Level 5 cars would be self-driving, all the time, everywhere. Considering most of the nation’s roadways aren’t pencil-straight interstates on a sunny day, the final SAE level would require extensive testing for sensors that can’t yet read road lines in bad weather, low light, on dirt roads, or countless other variable circumstances. Although having a steering wheel and pedals wouldn’t preclude a car from being Level 5, to achieve the designation those controls would be useless: Level 5 cars aren’t driven by humans in any circumstance.
