Toyota has launched the Corolla Cross facelift in Indonesia, five years after the original model appeared in the country.
The crossover is now available solely as a hybrid – the pre-facelift’s pure-ICE variant is no more. The HEV facelift is priced at Rp 603.5 juta (RM164,757) and Toyota Indonesia’s website says that the CBU import is a spot order with an indent time of minimum three months.
Equipment highlights include a new EV-style grille and bumper design with new LED headlamps, a panoramic retractable glass roof, 12.3-inch multi-information digital display, 10-inch infotainment head unit with wireless smartphone connectivity, new rear lights and an electronic parking brake that retires the ancient foot-operated brake.
At the heart of the HEV powertrain is a 2ZR-FXE 1.8-litre engine with 98 PS and 142 Nm of torque. The Atkinson cycle unit is paired to an electric motor rated at 72 PS and 163 Nm, taking juice from a nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery. Total system output is 122 PS and an E-CVT specially designed for hybrids transmits power to the front wheels.
In Malaysia, we have the 1.8 HEV, priced at RM140,800, along with a 1.8V that kicks off the range at RM133,800. The latter’s 139 PS/172 Nm 1.8L engine goes it alone without electric help, and the gearbox is a regular CVT with seven virtual speeds. At the top of the Malaysian range is the 1.8 HEV GR Sport at RM148,800. This is a new variant as the pre-facelift GR Sport was not offered as a hybrid.

VW will preview an entry-level EV due in 2027 with the ID.Every1 concept to be unveiled in March
The entry-level EV will have a targeted starting price of around 20,000 euros
VW is developing a lower-cost version of its MEB platform for a range of upcoming affordable EVs
Volkswagen is working on an entry-level electric vehicle due in 2027, with a targeted starting price of around 20,000 euros (approximately $20,800), and an upcoming concept will preview the design.
EVs are still out of reach for most buyers due to their high price compared to comparable gas and diesel models, but automakers are attempting to bridge the gap with new affordable options.
VW will launch an ID.2 (the Polo name is another possibility) subcompact hatch in 2026 with a targeted price of 25,000 euros ($26,000), and previewed the design in 2023 with the ID.2all concept.
A crossover version will follow shortly after, and there will be sister models of both vehicles from other Volkswagen Group brands.

The next stage for VW is an even smaller small hatch similar to the discontinued e-up! electric minicar. On Thursday, VW released teaser sketches of a concept previewing the entry-level hatch and confirmed the concept will debut in early March. The concept is called the ID.Every1, hinting that the production version that follows may be called an ID.1.
The new affordable EVs will be based on a lower-cost version of the current MEB dedicated EV platform, found in vehicles like the ID.4 and ID.Buzz. The lower-cost version, dubbed MEB Entry, has been designed to be shorter than the regular MEB platform and features a single motor at the front.
VW has also confirmed that its main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, will soon start preparations to build vehicles on a next-generation dedicated EV platform known as the SSP. The first SSP-based EVs to be built at the Wolfsburg plant will be the next-generation Mk9 Golf and a related T-Roc crossover.
The timing for the arrival of the first model on the SSP platform wasn’t mentioned. The SSP platform was originally due to spawn its first model in 2026, though that is now expected to happen in 2028 or later. The platform is still expected to be used by most of the future EVs launched across the VW Group, along with common battery cells and common software.
McLaren has revealed the MCL39 as its contender for the 2025 Formula 1 season

McLaren is the first to reveal its new Formula 1 race car for the 2025 season, though the reigning Constructors’ Champion is saving the full details, including the livery, for a formal debut on Feb. 18.
The new car carries the MCL39 designation (the previous car was the MCL38) and will be piloted by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the new season, with Andrea Stella continuing as team principal. Norris finished second in the Drivers’ Championship last season, behind Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen.
The 2025 F1 cars follow most of the same design regulations as last year’s models, with power unit rules remaining fixed ahead of the new regulations set for 2026. A minor change this year includes tighter restrictions on DRS designs and wing deflections. Additionally, cars must now be fitted with a driver cooling system if the weather forecast predicts a race-day temperature exceeding 88 degrees F. The bonus point for the fastest lap has also been removed for the new season.
McLaren is likely to have developed some innovations for the MCL39, though details will remain unknown until the official debut.
2025 McLaren MCL39 Formula 1 race car
F1 cars feature carbon-fiber composite honeycomb structures for the chassis and hybrid power units that combine a turbocharged 1.6-liter V-6 with two motor-generators—one on the driveline and another integrated with the turbo—for a peak output of around 1,000 hp. McLaren continues to use a power unit supplied by Mercedes-Benz AMG.
McLaren’s performance last season was one of the biggest surprises, as the team enjoyed a major resurgence in the second half. After struggling early on, Norris and Piastri became regular front-runners and secured multiple podium finishes. Norris was even in title contention for much of the season, and thanks to Piastri’s contributions, McLaren secured the Constructors’ Championship—its first since 1998, when David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen drove for the team.
The MCL39 is scheduled to join the rest of the 2025 fleet at the Bahrain International Circuit on Feb. 26 for pre-season testing. The first race of the season, the Australian Grand Prix, will take place on March 16. There will be 24 races this season, including three U.S. stops in Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas.
It was last summer that NASCAR unveiled a prototype electric race car with a crossover-like body, as a means to demonstrate the series’ commitment to reducing emissions.
Ford followed up with its own prototype styled like the Mustang Mach-E, featuring the same specifications as NASCAR’s own prototype, namely a powertrain consisting of a trio of motors and a 78-kwh battery.
On Thursday, Chevrolet rolled out its own prototype, with the Blazer EV being the basis. Chevy’s prototype, dubbed the Blazer EV.R NASCAR prototype, will formally debut at the 2025 Daytona 500, set to run on Feb. 16.
Once again the prototype packs a trio of motors fed by a 78-kwh battery. Chevy said those motors deliver a combined output of more than 1,300 hp, and they were developed closely with NASCAR to arrive at certain parameters and technical elements. Much of the chassis components are also lifted from NASCAR’s Next Gen chassis.

Chevy stated that engineers completed consistent laps at race speed during recent testing at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina. However, don’t expect to see something like the prototype racing in a NASCAR electric series anytime soon.
While there are rumors such a series is already in the planning stages, any launch is likely some time away still. So far, NASCAR has stated that these prototype only serve to provide a glimpse of what’s possible “years down the road.”
Chevy will have another Blazer EV on hand at this weekend’s Daytona 500. A 2025 Blazer EV SS will serve as the official pace car for the race, with actor Alan Ritchson to hop behind the wheel.

Low Emission Zones in Europe- what are they?
Many countries across Europe, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Portugal, have introduced restricted zones to try to combat vehicle pollution. They tend to affect older and/ or larger vehicles which are generally higher polluting.
Most of these zones are around a city, such as Paris or London, but some are around a protected area too.
There are several different types of Low Emission zones:
Some are closed to all vehicles of a certain emission category (more on that shortly)
Some can only be entered with a Crit’air or similar sticker and need to be registered in advance or pay a fee within a short period of entering (usually 24 hours)
Others can only be entered at certain times of the day/ week.
Is it a Crit’Air, a toll pass or a vignette?
Ok, this bit is important.
A toll pass is NOT the same as a low emission zone sticker.
A vignette (used in Switzerland or Austria) is NOT the same as a low emission zone sticker.
A crit’air IS a form of low emission sticker, but only valid in France. You need different ones for different countries and usually they take 4-6 weeks to arrive so you need to order them way before you set of on your Europe road trip.
NOTE: It is only one sticker per COUNTRY, not per city, so you should only need one for France, one for Germany etc.
And, don’t forget, if you don’t plan to enter any zones, you don’t need a sticker at all (see below.)

How do you find these zones?
Luckily, there are several ways to find these zones so you can either avoid them or get the appropriate solution.
The best way I’ve found is the Urban Access Regulations website, which has a map of all the zones and their type. You can use this to plot your route and plan your road trip.
Motorhoming in Germany
Do you HAVE to get a low emission zone sticker?
If you want to enter a low emission zone with your vehicle, and it’s allowed under that zone’s conditions, then yes, you must get and display a sticker.
HOWEVER, I’ve been touring Europe in a motorhome for years and I’ve never once bought a sticker for any zone.
To be honest, I rarely visit cities, especially now I travel with my dog, but on the rare occasions I do want to, I prefer to park up in an aire or campsite (where I can leave the motorhome safely) and then use public transport to visit the city.

Do low emission zones apply to motorcycles?
Yep, many of them do, especially in France. In Germany, many of them do not seem to apply, but please to check carefully. Obviously, if you are travelling with several motorcycles, like I do, you need a sticker for each bike.
Europe low emission zones- how do you comply with the requirements?
These are the steps you need to take to comply with the low emission zone requirements around the UK and Europe:
Check if the city you want to visit has a Low Emission zone using this map or the city search function. Have a look at the map to see what cities and towns have implemented the zones. Click here for Map.
Look at your vehicle logbook (V5) to see what category your motorhome, campervan or car is.
Purchase the appropriate sticker(s) from the government websites.
TOP TIP: These stickers don’t cost a huge amount of money. If you’re not sure, or you would like to stay flexible, it’s worth buying one for each country you wish to visit.
Low Emission Zones in France
Ok, let’s look at the rules for France.
France has two types of low emission zones; ones which are in force ALL the time called ZFE ( These include Paris, Lille, Lyon and Strasbourg), and ones which come into force when air quality is particularly bad.
For ZFEs, you MUST display a valid Crit’Air sticker (make sure it’s in the correct place on your windscreen- instructions are sent with it) and there may ALSO be time restrictions when you can/ cannot enter, depending on your sticker colour.
In France, there are 6 different levels/ categories; your vehicle will fall into one of them.
Green
Purple
Yellow
Red
Grey – worst polluting
Confusingly, they don’t match up to the Euro emissions.

Who needs a Crit Air Sticker?
Displaying a Crit’Air sticker IS compulsory for all road vehicles wishing to enter restricted zones, including motorcycles and foreign registered vehicles (such as UK motorhomes). Agricultural and construction machinery are not included.
People with a European disabled badge can enter an environmental zone at any time, but you must display both an environmental sticker AND a European disabled badge.
If you have a vehicle older than 1 January 1997 (1 June 2000 for motorbikes), you will be unable to get a sticker and must remain outside the zones. Beware if you have a vehicle with category N on the logbook, because the strictest rules will apply to you!
If you are hiring a motorhome/ campervan, please make sure it has the appropriate sticker on the windscreen before you take it into a zone, or you will get the fine.
NOTE: It’s sometimes called a Crit’Air vignette. Do not confuse this with a toll pass. France doesn’t use vignettes for tolls, so you still need to pay those are you travel. Find out more about motorhoming in France here.
Where to buy Crit’Air stickers
You buy the Crit’Air Stickers from HERE– Do NOT use any other website as there are plenty of spam sites about (this isn’t an affiliate site in any way. It’s the government one.) It’s in French, but can be translated into English.
It costs less than 5€, including postage. Don’t pay any more.
Click the ‘Order your vignette’ tab, then ‘foreign registered vehicle’ (assuming it’s a UK registered motorhome/ camper), then complete the application. You will need the following:
Vehicle Registration Number
Date of first registration
Vehicle category (found on logbook)
Fuel source (ie- petrol/ diesel etc)
VIN number
Make of the vehicle
Euro Standard Emission (found on Logbook)
Co2 emission
You’ll also need to upload a copy of the vehicle V5C Log book in PDF or PNG
NOTE: For a ‘normal’ motorhome/ campervan, you are a PRIVATE CAR. The people in the Crit Air department will see the type of vehicle on the V5C logbook you upload and will send the correct emissions sticker.
How long does it take to receive the Crit’Air sticker?
You should receive the Crit d’Air within 2-3 weeks of your application, although they do say to allow up to 6 weeks, so order in plenty of time before your trip.
There is a way to track the progress of your application on the Crit d’Air website (make sure you’ve entered your email address correctly when you order.)
What happens if you do not purchase a Crit Air vignette?
Driving a road vehicle in a town or city with a low emission zone in place without correctly displaying a Crit Air vignette can lead to you being fined up to €135. These can be electronic fines delivered by mail or on-the-spot fines issued by Police.
How often do you need to renew the Crit’Air vignette?
Never. As long as you keep the vehicle the same (no catalytic converters etc) and as long as it remains properly affixed and legible on your windscreen, you don’t need to order another one for as long as you own that vehicle.

Low Emission Zones in Germany
In Germany, most of the larger cities have ‘Umweltzonen’, which means you can only enter with an ‘Umweltplakette’ (environmental sticker). There are three colours of stickers which is based upon emission levels of the vehicle and applies to all vehicles except motorcycles.
In 2022, only vehicles with a green sticker can enter the Umweltzones. Vehicles with the red or yellow sticker are banned from entering and must remain outside the zones.
They may introduce a blue sticker for very clean, green and electric vehicles but they aren’t available yet.

Where to buy a low emission zone sticker for Germany
There are two ways to get a low emission zone sticker for Germany:
Purchase it in advance on the government website HERE (you’ll need to upload a copy of your V5 logbook
Buy it an any service station with a TÜV (Technischer Überwachungsverein, or Technical Inspection Association) station attached. You will need to present your REAL V5C logbook at the TÜV station.
Find your nearest TÜV station in northern Germany and southern Germany.
Motorists with a European Disabled Parking Badge (placed in clear view behind the windscreen) do not currently need to purchase an environmental sticker (but that may change, so please do check before you travel.)
You do not need an environmental sticker just to drive on motorways or local roads- only if you plan to enter one of the zones. See the map of low emission zones in Germany here.
It costs €5 to €10 to request the sticker. If you do not visibly display the sticker, you risk a fine ranging from €80 to €100.
Diesel Transit bans
As well as the low emission zones, some cities in Germany also have transit bans on diesel vehicles which aren’t up to the minimum of Euro 6. Please do check in advance if you plan to drive into a German city and have an older vehicle or a very large one, as you may have no choice but to park outside and use public transport to visit the city.
How often do you need to renew your environmental sticker for Germany?
You don’t. As long as you don’t change the registration plate, the environmental sticker will remain valid with the vehicle .

With another year passing since any form of SH Garage update on my two project cars – Project Spec C and Project Levin – I could dig into the excuse book for multiple reasons as to why.
Spare time has been a limiting factor, but being able to use one car while work continued with the other was a priority. My Subaru Impreza WRX STI Spec C hasn’t had much in the way of fixes and upgrades, and this was intentional; I didn’t need two car-sized paperweights.
Keeping the car mobile and useable meant only minor tweaks, the first of which was fitting some Group A-style side mirrors – mostly for looks, not looking out of. The next and most important change was to fit a front-mounted oil-to-air cooler, similar to what came in the ‘normal’ Spec C (tarmac spec with 17-inch wheels). Given the previous mention of oil temperature spikes of up to 130°C, the stock Laminova oil-to-water cooler (mounted under the oil filter) that came in my ’16-inch’ (gravel spec) car just couldn’t keep up.
Flat-four engines are challenging to route oil cooler lines, which is why the normal Spec C features a cooler plumbed with hard lines. These are hard to find and expensive to buy, so I opted to piece together an oil-to-air kit, sourcing the AN fittings, lines, Mocal thermostatic plate, and Setrab oil cooler separately.
A bit of CAD (cardboard-aided design) was required to create the support brackets for the cooler.
Later GDB-generation Subaru Imprezas came with a C brace underneath designed to connect and brace the lower arm mounting points around the core support and lower arms. Great, until you need to route an oil cooler line. After much deliberation, the most logical routing for the cooler lines was right where the brace sat. More CAD, some cutting, grinding and glueing together with the MIG welder allowed a big enough notch for clearance.
After cutting the AN lines to the right lengths and heat-sleeving the section that came closest to the exhaust manifold, it was all ready to fit.
Along with an engine oil change, the gearbox and rear differential received fresh fluids, too.
The last service item to replace was the panel air filter; the one in the car had seen better days. Intending to support local industries where possible, I took a quick trip to Ramair Filters – handily just a town away from where I live – and ticked that job off the list with a new Proram panel.
But the most dramatic upgrade I’ve made to Project Spec C over the last year was in the suspension department. Subaru’s intended purpose for this model saw regular STI road suspension replaced in favour of STI competition parts. While adequate, I had always kept an eye out for worthy replacements. A late-night browsing of Facebook Marketplace turned up a just-listed set of HKS Hipermax GT coilovers.
Removed from a newly imported Subaru S204 that was being returned to stock standard condition, the HKS coilovers would be a perfect road-biased suspension upgrade. They came fitted with 6kg/mm front and 3kg/mm rear spring rates and retained the inverted damper design.
They were in good condition, but a quick degrease, clean, and chasing the threads, they were back together. I’m running them at the maximum height, which is still slightly lower than I would like, but it works well for now and is a night and day difference over the stock setup in terms of ride quality.
A rare opportunity presented itself over the summer when I offered George the keys to my Subaru for him to see what it was like to drive. Schedules aligned, which allowed us a morning to take in the B-roads around Bicester and, in turn, the opportunity for me to drive a poster car – his recently acquired Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 2.
Boxy arches, four-wheel drive, four doors and turbocharging are the products of companies steeped in rallying heritage.
There are obvious advancements made in the decade gap between the two, but also many similarities.
A quick stop off to see the guys at Autosportif and Robbie’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Mäkinen completed the dream lineup.
After 2,500 miles covered over the summer, I’m still slightly conflicted about what’s next for Project Spec C; maybe larger wheels and tyres to make it more capable. Or raise it more, fit some 15s and chunky tyres and live out my rally recce car dreams. Decisions, decisions! But for now, the car sits tucked away from the copious amounts of salt that British roads get covered in every winter, patiently waiting for spring to emerge.
You’ve likely heard the saying ‘It takes a village to raise a child’, but, paraphrasing slightly, having a good group of friends around to help during a car project is invaluable. From moral support to technical knowledge or just being a spare pair of hands, friends’ help cannot be understated. Ultimately, while I could have undertaken almost all of this stuff myself, it’s a whole lot more fun sharing the process with like-minded people.
Project Levin – my ex-featured kouki AE86 Toyota Corolla Levin hatchback – was away for a little over a year, undergoing some fairly dramatic repairs at Retro Speed Shop, which painted my previous black AE86 Levin. Before leaving, a comprehensive strip-down was required, removing anything that wasn’t stuck down, as well as some things that were. Given the difficulty in finding replacement glass, I opted to keep the windscreen and rear quarter glass in, but like a closing-down sale, everything else had to go.
After much late-night research, removal of sound deadening seemed to fall under two options: using a lot of heat or using a lot of cold. Heat is messy, smelly and requires a lot of cleaning, so instead, I opted for dry ice pellets.
Dry ice worked incredibly well, spreading the pellets across the sound deadening and then waiting for the magic to happen.
Here’s a tip for anyone planning to give it a go themselves: For any areas that don’t have a level surface, putting the dry ice into a bag and taping it up against the area, or even the back side of it, worked a treat for me.
When the time eventually came to move the car, creativity was required to get it onto the trailer. After forklifting it into position on the trailer, some wooden pallets and ratchet straps were required to stabilise it on its rollover spit for the 2.5-hour trip. Rob May, who’s had his AE86 featured on Speedhunters before, was gracious enough to tow the car up to Stoke-on-Trent for me.
As I’d removed parts, areas in need of attention revealed themselves. By the time Iain at Retro Speed Shop saw it, he was aware of the work that lay ahead, save for a few hidden surprises.
Some extra bracing was also welded into the engine bay.
Rust was cut out, and new metal was welded into any areas that required it.
Replacement upper and lower rear panels were deemed necessary, along with some stock-width rear arches in place of the wider fibreglass ones previously fitted, as I’m going for more of an OEM+ look. It’s great to finally see more and more reproduction and heritage parts becoming available for the AE86 as they surpass 40 years of age.
I was, however, missing a few critical parts: The front fenders were beyond repair, the vented bonnet was sold with my previous AE86, and the boot lid had too many holes from previously riveted-on aero appendages. The fenders were sourced from a friend in Japan, and both a spoilerless bootlid and an OEM-style bonnet came from XTR Auto in the Czech Republic.
I made a few trips up to Retro Speed Shop to check in on progress, bringing more parts as required as the panel work edged ever closer to completion.
On one of those trips, I’d given Iain some basic drivetrain parts to get the car rolling ahead of collection, along with a set of wheels. I’ve always liked the Work Meister S1 and bought a full 15×7.5-inch set locally – perfect for the stock-width arches. As is commonplace with most AE86 owners, these won’t be the only set of wheels destined for the car, with some others hopefully making their way from Japan in the coming weeks.
Yet again, with the help of a friend (Kevin this time), we got the car back home safely. It was hugely gratifying to see the car in a fresh coat of Toyota 040 Super White II, a huge transformation from how it looked when I first bought it.
So what’s next for Project Levin? As and when time has permitted, I’ve been in the garage, slowly refitting parts, with everything being cleaned up to varying degrees. There have been some surprises which haven’t been budgeted for, but scope creep seems to be a common occurrence when it comes to projects. Mark knows all about this…

1. Understanding the Climate & Weather Patterns
a. Research Your Destination
Before I arrived in northern Europe, I spent a lot of time reading about average temperatures, humidity, and seasonal changes. This helped me figure out whether I’d need a heavy-duty winter coat or just some lightweight layers.

Ford introduced the Transit Trail in late 2022 during the tail end of the vanlife boom. It was an off-road ready van with chunky 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse tires, 3.5 more inches of ground clearance and upgraded underbody protection. Inside was a blank slate, but came with lots of spot for building in power and amenities needed to make the Transit a home.
It seem the $65,000 Transit Trail died a quiet death, according to Ford Authority, after the model fell off the Big Blue Oval’s website without fanfare.
What could lead Ford to get rid of a model that’s barely been on sale three model years? It would seem that supply chain issues are an ongoing problem as Ford Pro communications manager Elsiabeth Kraft confirmed to us.
On-going challenges in the supply chain and part availability constraints impacted 2023 and 2024 Transit vans equipped with the Trail package, so we made the decision to remove package availability from the 25MY Transit program while we prioritize delivering parts and service to customers with impacted vehicles.
It’s worth noting that the Transit Trail may not be gone for long. Kraft said that Ford is continuing to look at demand for the Transit Trail to assess “ demand to determine future viability.”
Just how is demand though? It would seem the market for pricey lifestyle isn’t as big as it once was. We asked Ford if they knew how many Transit Trails have been sold since its introduction. While Ford confirmed that exact sales numbers on the Transit Trail aren’t known since it’s more a package than a model line, Ford did confirm that it saw a decrease in demand across all segments of the motorhome industry following the Pandemic.
The Transit Trail was not without problems during its brief existence. Ford Authority mentions that in March 2024, a recall was issued after it was discovered that the factory fitted 30.5-inch, 245/75R16 could come in contact with the front wheel arch liner and damage the tires. So Ford fitted affected vans with 28-inch, 235/65R16 tires, knocking 1.2 inches of ground clearance from the Trail. Another recall was issued a few months later over a possible loss in power steering.
Even with these issues the Transit Trail was unique. Unless you go aftermarket or spend big money for a Mercedes Sprinter, no one else sells anything like it.
