You could be forgiven for thinking that Chanel paints a black and white picture of the world. Meeting Arnaud Chastaingt, the director of Chanel’s watchmaking creation studio, this impression is given form because the man is invariably wearing black. In fact, he tells us that he always wears black and the brand’s visuals for him are very much true to his personal quirks. Of course, this whole “Chanel is all black and all white and nothing else” misses the mark; colour was very important to the Maison from the start, from Gabrielle Chanel’s own vision. Chastaingt helpfully reminds the world of this with the new J12 Bleu this year. In this exclusive conversation, he shares the obsessive journey behind the J12 Bleu’s creation, his views on masculine-feminine codes and why every detail, down to the minute track on the dial, matters.

There is this impression that Chanel is only, or mostly, about black and white. Is the new J12 Bleu an attempt to dispel this myth?
It’s true what you say, that Chanel is black and white, (Chastaingt himself is never pictured in anything other than black – Ed), it’s the duality that is really part of our codes. You know, it’s very important, but I think it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Of course, black and white are really perfect as the frame of the House, but colours were omnipresent in Chanel creations since the beginning, and Gabriel Chanel herself was using colours in her creations. The Bleu is (thus) really more than just a choice of colour… (Looking back on) the story of the J12, it was created in 2000 in black, and in 2003 in white. The J12 was launched in ceramic and (so) ceramic became really our exceptional savoir-faire that we have in our manufacture (including the ability to use colours in this material, which is technically challenging).
You know that we have a manufacture at La Chaux-des-Fonds and it is just amazing and inspires me a lot. I am doing design (in Paris), but I have a lot of conversations with the team at the manufacture. For example, (the Dripping Art J12 boxed set), the five watches where we put enamel on ceramic, which is new. I really liked to explore different creation processes with the manufacture team and it was similar with the J12 Bleu; it was a long project that took five years of development.

Tell us more about this “Bleu”, and how it came about?
Of course, I was dreaming about a dark blue like (you see in the J12 Bleu), but (to make it a reality) I knew that I would have to give the manufacture time to find the colour I was dreaming of, and time to find the perfect process of development. You have to go from a powder to a solid (this relates to how ceramic is formed for cases and bracelets, which is covered in more detail in the main story – Ed). There are many steps in the process of fabrication and of course this was very complex for the manufacture. It is not like cooking, where you can add (some elements) and find the perfect blue (by trial and error, following a recipe and eyeballing the ingredient mix). No, no, it’s not like that. The manufacture team made so many samples and sometimes the blue was too red, or yellow, and I remember the day when they proposed to me the final samples. I knew when I had this sample (of the blue that was used in the production pieces) in my hands that it was the blue I was dreaming of for Chanel; it was an emotional response, ultimately.
That is a challenging way to work! How many versions of blue were there?
So, it takes time – a lot of time – but at Chanel, you know, we always allot time to do things in the best way because we are the House of Creation; creation always goes with excellence (in the various aspects of the making-of), you know. That goes for the whole House of Chanel, you know, whether for couture, for perfume, for jewellery. And of course, for watches too.
As for how many versions of the blue I saw, I don’t know exactly. It’s true that in the creative process, I’ve never shared some sort of Pantone reference (or the typical sheet of colours that show all the versions of a possible colour – Ed). No, absolutely not. It was more a discussion. The team at the manufacture knew that my dream was to have a shade, you know. Black and white are not colours (black is the absence of light, of colour and white is all colours – Ed) in the optical sense. You can say they are shades, in English. In my discussions with the manufacture, I said I want to give colour to black (as if under a blue light). So, after this discussion, the team understood that I wanted a dark blue – a blue that is black or a black that is blue! They did many tests, and produced many samples before we found the perfect colour for Chanel.

You talk about a “rigorous elegance,” with regards to the J12 Bleu. What does this mean, and does it have to do with the many tests and experiments that had to be done?
Yeah, it’s really difficult for me to explain. I was looking for something uniform, but not like in the military or anything. That is not the way I want to go. I wanted a uniform colour, like many men who wear jackets in a blue so dark it looks black. A nice kind of black; dark blue can also be another code of elegance. It could be the new black, for people who absolutely do not want to wear black because it reminds them of mortality.
What is your approach to designing timepieces for men and for women?
Of course, Chanel is feminine brand and a feminine House; of course, we know that 90 percent of our customers are women. The Premiere watch is absolutely only for women, yet it was a little bit different with the J12 because this watch was created by a man for himself (this was the late Jacques Helleu, 25 years ago; it was a creation that deeply impacted Chastaingt, as you will discover – Ed). After a while, women wanted this watch too (and perhaps more and more women too, given the popularity of the smaller sizes – Ed). Today, we’re surprised because a lot of men are wearing the J12. Maybe more in the new generation…
It’s very paradoxical, you know, because we have a very powerful feminine brand today and yet the style was inspired by men. You may know the story of Gabrielle Chanel (and what Rebecca Doulton called “her penchant for appropriating clothes from men’s wardrobes and giving them her magical designer’s twist” – Ed). It is true that in my time (as director of Chanel’s Watchmaking Creation Studio), we made the Monsieur watch, which is only for men, but it was not my obsession to make watches for men or for women. It (referring to the Monsieur watch) was more because I started working for Chanel in 2013 and I discovered the big secret when I entered the House: Chanel wanted to develop its own movement at the manufacture, with the Calibre 1, and I was very surprised because not so many brands can do that. Chanel told me that I’m free to do whatever I want around (this first calibre). I thought (because of Gabrielle Chanel’s inspirations) that it would be a great story to have the first all in-house watch from Chanel be a watch for men.
But it’s very interesting for a designer or creator at Chanel because we play all the time with masculine and feminine codes… You know that when I created the Boyfriend watch, I was thinking of Gabrielle Chanel stealing the watch of her boyfriend in the morning! Men were never far from Mademoiselle Chanel’s thoughts.

The J12 is a sports watch in form but your obsession with details in design gives it an entirely different style. Tell us why details such as the length of the hands and the width of the minute track are important to you?
Thank you! I use this word, ‘obsess’ too; I’m obsessed with details. You know, with the design of a watch (all of its design content), you have to consider everything, from A-Z. My development team and the creative team know that I’m obsessed about details. Everything is important: the crown, the typography of the numbers, the buckle, the finishing of the leather, and, of course, the finishing of the movement. If you want to see me smile at the end of the project, I have to (be sure of) everything. I can’t do it differently. It’s impossible for me to let something go (if it isn’t just right); all the details have to have been considered.
Your question reminds me of the exercise of reworking the design of the J12 in 2019; I have a very specific story with this watch. Maybe you know I discovered this watch more than 20 years ago (when I was a student). I had a real crush on (the J12), and maybe this watch opened my eyes to the fact that the watch world could be the territory of designers too. (At the time), I thought (watch design) was a territory for only watchmakers, and for technical thinking.
So, when it came to the exercise to rework the J12, I understood the importance of the details of this; my creative process was more that of a surgeon than a designer because (obviously) I didn’t have to start from scratch. The watch (already) fascinated me and so I understood that humility and respect would be the best way to approach the (2019 rework). I analysed all the details of the J12 and all the proportions. A watch is like a microcosm (of details) and when you enter it, it is like magic (for creator and collector alike – Ed). If it was not perfect (like this), we would not have launched the watch (this was the anniversary collection in 2020 – Ed). But you know it is the same way for all of Chanel, for all product categories; if a perfume is not perfect, we don’t launch it.

Sultanahmet: The Best Place To Stay in Istanbul for Your First Time
If you want to know where to stay in Istanbul for the first time, I’d highly recommend Sultanahmet. While this isn’t the perfect neighborhood entirely (where is?), it is home to the majority of Istanbul’s top historic spots, and you’ll be able to get a snapshot of the city as a whole by basing yourself here.
This is where you’ll find the Grand Bazaar, Basilica Cistern, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, and Topkapı Palace. There are also countless hotels in this part of the city, as well as a million and one (I didn’t count) cafes and restaurants.

Top Things To Do in Sultanahmet
There’s no shortage of things to see and do in Sultanahmet, but make peace with not being able to do them all within one visit. Here are my most highly recommended points of interest:
2. Basilica Cistern:Dating back to the year 532, this underground attraction is a must-visit. I loved the atmosphere, as it felt like history was all around me and the echoes felt like ghosts from the past. Places like this are exactly why Sultanahmet is the best place to stay in Istanbul for tourists. The only downside is the queues but you can take a tour to avoid that. 2. Matbah Restaurant:There are a lot of restaurants in Sultanahmet that say they make traditional Ottoman cuisine, but a lot don’t do it so well. That’s not the case at Matbah. This restaurant is upmarket, and you’ll enjoy a wonderful view as you dine. Click here for directions.
3. Şehzade Cağ Kebap: This is one of my go-to places in Istanbul; even if I’m not staying in Sultanahmet, I’ll travel there for this restaurant alone. Cağ kebap is a lamb shish-style dish but this restaurant does it like nowhere else and locals flock here time and time again. Click here for directions.
Taksim/Beyoğlu: Best Area in Istanbul for Nightlife
If you want to know where to stay in Istanbul for nightlife, there’s no better place than Taksim and Beyoğlu. I’ll link both of these areas together because Taksim is in Beyoğlu, and they’re essentially one and the same.
Taksim is without a doubt one of the best areas to stay in Istanbul if you want a vibrant experience, but it’s also one of those places where you have to use your common sense when it comes to safety (take regular precautions such as not walking with high volumes of cash and don’t flash valuables).
That doesn’t mean Taksim is dangerous, however – far from it. I’ve stayed in Taksim many times, and I enjoyed the ‘city that never sleeps’ vibe. Istiklal Street is packed no matter the time of the day or night and is home to plenty of bars, cafes, restaurants, clubs, and even museums along and behind it.
There isn’t much you won’t find in Taksim, which is why it’s a great choice for people who enjoy the fast-paced city lifestyle.

Top Things To Do in Taksim/Beyoğlu

1. Nostalgic İstiklal Caddesi Tram: Running down Istiklal Street from Taksim Square, a ride on this tram should be on your itinerary, (although it’s small so you’ll need to be at the front of the queue to get on). It’s a great way to explore Istiklal without having to battle the crowds. Click here for directions.
2. Modern City Walking Tour:Taksim has many winding back streets that contain old bookstores, boutique stores, and museums, and without a guide, you could miss a lot of it. Taksim is the best place to stay in Istanbul for nightlife, but there are some pretty great local and international restaurants too. Take a look at the below:
1. Corner Irish Bar: I am practically a local at this place whenever I’m in Istanbul; it’s such a warm and welcoming place. The food offered is regular pub food, such as burgers and pizza, but they do it extremely well. 2. WAMA’s:I think I might have tried almost everything on this restaurant’s menu, and let me tell you, it’s not a small menu… Their lasagne is off the scale, and they do amazing salads. Galata: The Coolest Place to Stay in Istanbul
There are many Istanbul neighborhoods, but I don’t think any are as cool as Galata, which runs just off Taksim and Beyoğlu, encompassing the Galata Tower. If you’re looking at where to stay in Istanbul and you want a place that’s low-key but has that hipster vibe, Galata is for you.
You’ll find small museums, live music cafes, bookstores, and lots of music stores selling some pretty interesting instruments. The only downside of Galata is that it’s located on a very steep hill, so you’ll need some comfortable shoes (and some stamina).

1. Galata Tower:The view from the top of this historic watchtower is like nothing you’ll have likely ever seen before. 3. Galata Bridge:This is one of the most iconic sights in Istanbul, and I’ve walked over it countless times taking photographs. You’ll see people fishing, selling ankle bracelets, and snacks right along its length on both sides.

Beşiktaş: The Best Place in Istanbul on a Budget
I think Beşiktaş is one of the best neighborhoods in Istanbul and I’ve stayed there many times before. It’s a great area for foodies, and it’s also pocket-friendly. If you’re looking for places to stay in Istanbul for groups, you’ll find some low-cost hotels here as well as hostels. However, there are also some very upmarket options too.
Beşiktaş sits right on the water’s edge, and it’s a hub for transport, with ferries going over to the Asian side and the Prince’s islands, boat tours, and buses coming and going all day long. The Kabataş tram station is only a 15-minute walk away. I love the welcoming feel of Beşiktaş, and despite it being very busy, it’s somehow also quite chilled-out.

1. Dolmabahçe Palace:I loved Topkapı Palace, but for me, Dolmabahçe wins hands down. The opulence is almost incomprehensible, to the point where it brought tears to my eyes. 2. Bosphorus Bridge in Ortaköy: Strictly speaking, this is still part of Beşiktaş, and you can walk there in around 20 minutes. It is positive news that the Chief Executive of Hong Kong has shifted the spotlight to support yacht tourism and the pleasure boating industry. As an industry, we fully agree with the director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, Xia Baolong, who urged to “Make good use of Hong Kong’s 1,180km of coastline and 263 islands, and develop wellness tourism, vacation tourism, cultural tourism and cruise tourism”.
It has been close to 20 years since a new marina was built in Hong Kong. The four identified sites for development in Hong Kong would pave the way forward for more growth for the boating industry and the local community. Each of the four sites has its merits, but should be studied in detail to maximise their full potential.

Hung Hom Marina: This is ideal for a landmark marina as it is in the harbour, enhancing the image of Hong Kong. It will be a natural extension of the Tsim Sha Tsui Avenue of Stars, encouraging the public to enjoy the waterfront.
Floating structures or platforms along the sea wall could enable more activities, shops or restaurants along the boardwalk. A marina with watersports facilities in this location would enable Hong Kong to host mega watersports events, which could reactivate Tsim Sha Tsui East. The proximity to The Polytechnic University could open the potential for more marine research or to provide technical courses.
Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter: An Aberdeen marina development expansion would enhance one of the most established boating hubs in Hong Kong. The enlarged sheltered water area could accommodate larger yachts above 30m to berth, and provide a new maintenance yard. It would also provide an alternative means to access the iconic Ocean Park and new Fullerton Hotel.
Airport Marina: The marina and watersports facilities in Skytopia have advantages in capturing the residents in Tung Chung, Tuen Mun and the Greater Bay Area (GBA). Yacht owners from the GBA could cross the border by car and hop on their yachts to cruise in Hong Kong. Visitors could fly in, charter a yacht, and discover Hong Kong.
Alternatively, local yachts could berth at the airport marina and visit the various Lantau attractions such as Tai O, Ma Wan, Discovery Bay, and Disneyland.
Lamma Island: A marina may not be appropriate here as there are not enough existing supporting facilities – such as water, electricity and sewage – and with no ground transportation, it is too far for the boat owners, captains and crew to provision the boats.
However, Lamma has merits in being a cruising destination with existing restaurants and cultural/tourist attractions like the fisherman village in Picnic Bay/Sok Kwu Wan, as well as plenty of beaches and walking trails.
CREATE A CRUISING NETWORK
For Hong Kong to be a yachting destination, we need to look beyond marinas and try to build a cruising network. We should upgrade and extend the landing platforms or berths at various island locations, while new and existing marinas should allocate a certain number of berths for visiting yachts.

BIG ECONOMIC IMPACT
Based on Hong Kong Census figures, the Hong Kong boating industry has an average import value of US$285 million per year (2020-2024), ranging from canoes to superyachts.
The boating industry doesn’t just stop at boat sales. The local economic impact continues throughout the lifespan of the boat; on average,owners need to spend about 10 per cent of the boat value every year on maintenance.
This translates to jobs and revenue for many businesses and individuals – including captains/crew, berthing/mooring fees, shipyards/mechanics/electricians, insurance, spare-parts sales, transportation, training, fuel stations, restaurants and even the local supermarkets.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Hong Kong has a rich maritime history and is also perfect for ecotourism, as we are blessed with beautiful waters and islands, as well as a Unesco Global Geopark. Many islands have cultural and tourist attractions, as well as great local seafood restaurants.
WAY FORWARD
The pleasure boat industry has grown significantly in recent decades, but has been stifled by the lack of berthing space. To ensure these proposed marina developments are designed with the correct berthing mix, sufficient facilities, and can cater to the boating industry, we believe a government task force or committee for the pleasure boating industry is necessary.

Chow is Chair of the Hong Kong Boating Industry Association and the Icomia Asia Working Group. He is founder and Director of Marine Asia, a marina consultancy representing Poralu Marine in Hong Kong and Macau, and the Manager of China Pacific Marine, a family-run boat dealership in Hong Kong that represents Jeanneau, Boston WhalerYanmar, Honda Marine, Sunstream and Yachtwerft Meyer.
You could be forgiven for thinking that Chanel paints a black and white picture of the world. Meeting Arnaud Chastaingt, the director of Chanel’s watchmaking creation studio, this impression is given form because the man is invariably wearing black. In fact, he tells us that he always wears black and the brand’s visuals for him are very much true to his personal quirks. Of course, this whole “Chanel is all black and all white and nothing else” misses the mark; colour was very important to the Maison from the start, from Gabrielle Chanel’s own vision. Chastaingt helpfully reminds the world of this with the new J12 Bleu this year. In this exclusive conversation, he shares the obsessive journey behind the J12 Bleu’s creation, his views on masculine-feminine codes and why every detail, down to the minute track on the dial, matters.

There is this impression that Chanel is only, or mostly, about black and white. Is the new J12 Bleu an attempt to dispel this myth?
It’s true what you say, that Chanel is black and white, (Chastaingt himself is never pictured in anything other than black – Ed), it’s the duality that is really part of our codes. You know, it’s very important, but I think it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Of course, black and white are really perfect as the frame of the House, but colours were omnipresent in Chanel creations since the beginning, and Gabriel Chanel herself was using colours in her creations. The Bleu is (thus) really more than just a choice of colour… (Looking back on) the story of the J12, it was created in 2000 in black, and in 2003 in white. The J12 was launched in ceramic and (so) ceramic became really our exceptional savoir-faire that we have in our manufacture (including the ability to use colours in this material, which is technically challenging).
You know that we have a manufacture at La Chaux-des-Fonds and it is just amazing and inspires me a lot. I am doing design (in Paris), but I have a lot of conversations with the team at the manufacture. For example, (the Dripping Art J12 boxed set), the five watches where we put enamel on ceramic, which is new. I really liked to explore different creation processes with the manufacture team and it was similar with the J12 Bleu; it was a long project that took five years of development.

Tell us more about this “Bleu”, and how it came about?
Of course, I was dreaming about a dark blue like (you see in the J12 Bleu), but (to make it a reality) I knew that I would have to give the manufacture time to find the colour I was dreaming of, and time to find the perfect process of development. You have to go from a powder to a solid (this relates to how ceramic is formed for cases and bracelets, which is covered in more detail in the main story – Ed). There are many steps in the process of fabrication and of course this was very complex for the manufacture. It is not like cooking, where you can add (some elements) and find the perfect blue (by trial and error, following a recipe and eyeballing the ingredient mix). No, no, it’s not like that. The manufacture team made so many samples and sometimes the blue was too red, or yellow, and I remember the day when they proposed to me the final samples. I knew when I had this sample (of the blue that was used in the production pieces) in my hands that it was the blue I was dreaming of for Chanel; it was an emotional response, ultimately.
That is a challenging way to work! How many versions of blue were there?
So, it takes time – a lot of time – but at Chanel, you know, we always allot time to do things in the best way because we are the House of Creation; creation always goes with excellence (in the various aspects of the making-of), you know. That goes for the whole House of Chanel, you know, whether for couture, for perfume, for jewellery. And of course, for watches too.
As for how many versions of the blue I saw, I don’t know exactly. It’s true that in the creative process, I’ve never shared some sort of Pantone reference (or the typical sheet of colours that show all the versions of a possible colour – Ed). No, absolutely not. It was more a discussion. The team at the manufacture knew that my dream was to have a shade, you know. Black and white are not colours (black is the absence of light, of colour and white is all colours – Ed) in the optical sense. You can say they are shades, in English. In my discussions with the manufacture, I said I want to give colour to black (as if under a blue light). So, after this discussion, the team understood that I wanted a dark blue – a blue that is black or a black that is blue! They did many tests, and produced many samples before we found the perfect colour for Chanel.

You talk about a “rigorous elegance,” with regards to the J12 Bleu. What does this mean, and does it have to do with the many tests and experiments that had to be done?
Yeah, it’s really difficult for me to explain. I was looking for something uniform, but not like in the military or anything. That is not the way I want to go. I wanted a uniform colour, like many men who wear jackets in a blue so dark it looks black. A nice kind of black; dark blue can also be another code of elegance. It could be the new black, for people who absolutely do not want to wear black because it reminds them of mortality.
What is your approach to designing timepieces for men and for women?
Of course, Chanel is feminine brand and a feminine House; of course, we know that 90 percent of our customers are women. The Premiere watch is absolutely only for women, yet it was a little bit different with the J12 because this watch was created by a man for himself (this was the late Jacques Helleu, 25 years ago; it was a creation that deeply impacted Chastaingt, as you will discover – Ed). After a while, women wanted this watch too (and perhaps more and more women too, given the popularity of the smaller sizes – Ed). Today, we’re surprised because a lot of men are wearing the J12. Maybe more in the new generation…
It’s very paradoxical, you know, because we have a very powerful feminine brand today and yet the style was inspired by men. You may know the story of Gabrielle Chanel (and what Rebecca Doulton called “her penchant for appropriating clothes from men’s wardrobes and giving them her magical designer’s twist” – Ed). It is true that in my time (as director of Chanel’s Watchmaking Creation Studio), we made the Monsieur watch, which is only for men, but it was not my obsession to make watches for men or for women. It (referring to the Monsieur watch) was more because I started working for Chanel in 2013 and I discovered the big secret when I entered the House: Chanel wanted to develop its own movement at the manufacture, with the Calibre 1, and I was very surprised because not so many brands can do that. Chanel told me that I’m free to do whatever I want around (this first calibre). I thought (because of Gabrielle Chanel’s inspirations) that it would be a great story to have the first all in-house watch from Chanel be a watch for men.
But it’s very interesting for a designer or creator at Chanel because we play all the time with masculine and feminine codes… You know that when I created the Boyfriend watch, I was thinking of Gabrielle Chanel stealing the watch of her boyfriend in the morning! Men were never far from Mademoiselle Chanel’s thoughts.

The J12 is a sports watch in form but your obsession with details in design gives it an entirely different style. Tell us why details such as the length of the hands and the width of the minute track are important to you?
Thank you! I use this word, ‘obsess’ too; I’m obsessed with details. You know, with the design of a watch (all of its design content), you have to consider everything, from A-Z. My development team and the creative team know that I’m obsessed about details. Everything is important: the crown, the typography of the numbers, the buckle, the finishing of the leather, and, of course, the finishing of the movement. If you want to see me smile at the end of the project, I have to (be sure of) everything. I can’t do it differently. It’s impossible for me to let something go (if it isn’t just right); all the details have to have been considered.
Your question reminds me of the exercise of reworking the design of the J12 in 2019; I have a very specific story with this watch. Maybe you know I discovered this watch more than 20 years ago (when I was a student). I had a real crush on (the J12), and maybe this watch opened my eyes to the fact that the watch world could be the territory of designers too. (At the time), I thought (watch design) was a territory for only watchmakers, and for technical thinking.
So, when it came to the exercise to rework the J12, I understood the importance of the details of this; my creative process was more that of a surgeon than a designer because (obviously) I didn’t have to start from scratch. The watch (already) fascinated me and so I understood that humility and respect would be the best way to approach the (2019 rework). I analysed all the details of the J12 and all the proportions. A watch is like a microcosm (of details) and when you enter it, it is like magic (for creator and collector alike – Ed). If it was not perfect (like this), we would not have launched the watch (this was the anniversary collection in 2020 – Ed). But you know it is the same way for all of Chanel, for all product categories; if a perfume is not perfect, we don’t launch it.

In March, EmJay and Nicolai Bohm set out on an ambitious journey in a Ferrari Purosangue. They started from Ushuaia, a town near the southern tip of Argentina, traveling north towards Alaska over the legendary Pan-American Highway. Unfortunately, their epic road trip has come to an abrupt end.
The Purosangue they have been driving over thousands of miles has crashed. The accident took place somewhere between Cusco and Nazca in Peru. Looking at the images and videos shared on Instagram, it appears that the car veered off into the roadside rain gutter.
Sadly, the damage was such that they could not continue their journey. Besides a few dents and scratches, videos reveal a driver-side rear suspension that has been completely destroyed.
The Ferrari Purosangue was specially modified for this journey. It was fitted with Force Light Beadlock wheels by delta4x4 and BF Goodrich All-terrain tires. The engine was completely stock, though. The 6.5-liter V12 engine develops 725 hp and 528 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
