Budget travelers love saving money — myself included. But one of the expenses that we shouldn’t be cheap with is travel insurance.

After over 17 years of traveling the world, I still never leave home without it.

Why?

Because I’ve seen firsthand how useful it can be — and how much money it can save.

I’ve lost baggage, had my camera broken, and even needed emergency medical help over the years.

Travel insurance has been there for me each time. Not only has it saved me money but it’s provided me with peace of mind as I explore.

I’ve written extensively over the years about why you need insurance, how to pick the right company, and listed my preferred providers.

Today, I want to talk about my favorite travel insurance company: SafetyWing.

Who is SafetyWing?

SafetyWing is an insurance company that focuses on affordable coverage for budget travelers and digital nomads (though you don’t have to be either to get coverage). It is run by nomads and expats who know exactly what such travelers need.

SafetyWing offers basic insurance plans (called “Nomad Essential”) for a fraction of what other companies charge, although they are also less comprehensive. To me, they are the best overall travel insurance company out there.

Their standard Nomad Insurance coverage costs just $56.28 USD for 4 weeks (for travelers aged 10-39). That’s one of the lowest prices out there for reliable travel insurance. They are super competitive when it comes to price.

Their coverage extends all the way to age 69, however, travelers aged 60-69 should expect to pay upwards of $196 USD per month for coverage. Still very reasonable, to be honest.

But is the coverage actually good? What about the customer service?

Today I want to review Safety Wing and talk about when it is — and isn’t — worth using so you can better prepare for your next trip and ensure you have the coverage you need.
 

What Does SafetyWing Cover?

SafetyWing’s standard Nomad Insurance plan is the Essential plan. It’s just $56.28 USD for four weeks of travel (outside the US). That works out to just $1.87 USD per day!

For travelers under age 64, that plan includes the following:

• $250,000 USD in emergency medical coverage
• $1,000 USD for emergency dental care
• $100,000 USD for medical evacuation ($25,000 USD if the cause of medical evacuation is acute onset of pre-existing condition)
• $10,000 USD for an evacuation due to political upheaval
• $5,000 USD for a trip interruption
• Up to $100 a day after a 12-hour delay period requiring an unplanned overnight stay. Subject to a maximum of 2 days.
• $12,500–25,000 USD for death or dismemberment
• $20,000 USD for repatriation of remains

Be sure to check the description of coverage for any conditions that apply.

Its $100,000 USD for medical evacuation is on the low end, but unless you’re heading out into the remote wilderness, that should be fine. (If you want higher coverage, get MedJet.)

Its travel-delay payout is pretty low, but airlines and most travel credit cards provide travel delay assistance too so you might not even need the coverage offered by SafetyWing. Additionally, it doesn’t really cover expensive electronics, which sucks if you have a pricey camera or video gear.

As with most standard travel insurance plans, this one doesn’t include pre-existing conditions or certain adventure sports, so it’s not a good policy if you’re going to do a lot of adventure activities on the road.

They do offer a couple helpful add-ons that I think a lot of travelers will appreciate, including coverage for adventure activities and electronics theft. That means that if you need the coverage, you can pay extra for it. However, if you don’t need it then you don’t have to pay for it, keeping your costs low. I appreciate that, as someone who always needs electronic coverage but who never needs adventure activity coverage (I’m not a big adrenaline junkie).
 

What’s Not Covered?

The Essential plan is primarily geared towards covering medical emergencies and basic travel mishaps (like delays and lost luggage). Here are some things that aren’t covered:

• Alcohol- or drug-related incidents.
• Extreme sports & adventure activities (unless you purchase the adventure sports add-on, which is available for non-US residents)
• Pre-existing conditions or general check-ups
• Trip cancellation
• Lost or stolen cash

Nomad Complete: Coverage for Digital Nomads and Long-Term Travelers

In 2023, SafetyWing launched Nomad Health (now called their “Complete” plan). It’s insurance for digital nomads, remote workers, and long-term travelers. This new plan offers a mix of the standard emergency coverage that we’ve been discussing above along with “regular” health care coverage, such as routine visits and preventive care.

The Complete plan also offers coverage in 175 countries, includes wellness benefits, mental health care, and the ability for individuals to choose their own doctor while traveling. They will be expanding coverage too, including an add-on for “electronics theft” (which, as someone who has been robbed while traveling, I think is a great idea).

It’s like the kind of health insurance you’d find in your home country, ensuring that you’re looked after no matter what happens while you’re abroad.

If you’re just heading out for a couple weeks or a couple months, SafetyWing’s Essential plan is the option for you. It’s perfect for emergencies, is super affordable, and is designed for budget travelers. It’s the plan I use when I travel these days.

However, if you’re going to be working abroad or traveling for months (or years), then their new Complete plan is the better option. It offers much more coverage while still being affordable. In fact, it’s the plan I wish I had when I started traveling long-term!

Making a Claim

SafetyWing makes it easy to file a claim through their online portal. You just upload all the required documents, screenshots, and photos, and wait to hear back. While claims can take up to 45 business days, most are handled in less than a week (as of writing, the average wait time is four days).

If you read the reviews online, most people who had a negative experience either didn’t know about the deductible (SafetyWing removed their deductible for non-US residents as of 2024) or hated the length of time it took to get paid. But that’s pretty normal for people to complain about.

On the plus side, SafetyWing’s average time to handle a claim is down to just four days. That’s way faster than most companies!
 

A Note About COVID

SafetyWing does include coverage for COVID-19. As long as the virus was not contracted before your plan starts, then it will be covered (as long as it is medically necessary).

SafetyWing also covers quarantine costs (outside your home country) for up to $50 USD/day for 10 days (provided that you’ve had your plan for at least 28 days).

Széchenyi Baths (City Park)

Széchenyi Baths is the largest open space in the city and one of the largest spa complexes in Europe. These warm outdoor pools are open year-round, providing a family-friendly atmosphere with the unique backdrop of the grand yellow historical building.

There are 15 indoor baths and 3 grand outdoor baths, saunas, steam rooms, and a rooftop greenhouse.

To enter, you’ll need to buy a ticket online or at the reception kiosk. You’ll also need a bathing suit, towels, and flip-flops. If you’re visiting in the summer, we suggest wearing sunscreen too, as the outdoor pools are quite exposed.

Budget-saving tip: Come earlier in the day for cheaper entry. You can also skip towel rental by bringing your own.

Hungarian Parliament Building

The iconic Hungarian Parliament building is a must-see in Budapest…but it’s also one of the trickiest to get tickets for. Spots sell out quickly due to their popularity. But if you do get a ticket, you won’t regret it!

This riverside building, founded between 1884 and 1902, is the third largest parliament building in the world. From the impressive Staircase XVII to touring the inside of the dome, you’ll love learning about Hungarian history from the hub of the most powerful in the land.

Tip: Book a guided tour so you can get the full experience.

• Price: EU citizens = 6,500 HUF. Non-EU citizens = 13,000 HUF. Children under 6 enter for free.
• Where to book: Online or at the Visitor Center in person.
• Opening hours: Monday – Sunday 08:00 – 18:00. (Changes seasonally, so check the website for updates)

The Great Market Hall

Of the five indoor markets in Budapest, the Great Market Hall, also known as the Central Market Hall, is the oldest and largest.

This beautiful, colorful, three-tiered market is a great snapshot of Budapest culture and food.

On the upper floor, you’ll find traditional Hungarian foods and pastries. We recommend trying “langós”, a deep-fried flatbread covered in cheese. The stalls on the ground floor have a wide array of goods, including souvenirs, textiles, and fresh produce.

• Price: Free
• Where to book: Booking is not necessary. However, if you’d like to join the Budapest Food Tour hosted from the Great Market Hall, you can book a ticket on the Visit Budapest website.
• Opening hours: Monday to Friday 06:00 – 18:00, Saturday 06:00 – 16:00, Sunday 10:00 – 16:00. Closed on official holidays and non-working days.

Matthias Church

While the whole district has gorgeous buildings to explore, our top picks would be the Matthias Church. It is a neo-Gothic marvel steeped in history.

Matthias Church has seen many lives as both a place of Christian worship and a mosque when the Ottoman Turks invaded Hungary. It has a welcoming yet majestic atmosphere, with concerts and events held here year-round.

• Price: 2,900 HUF
• Where to book: Online or at the entrance
• Opening hours: Monday – Friday 09:00 – 17:00. Saturday 09:00 – 12:00 (noon). Sunday 13:00 – 17:00. Liturgies & weddings have priority, and will affect regular Opening Hours.

Fisherman’s Bastion

Another must-visit in the Buda Castle district is Fisherman’s Bastion. Here you’ll find panoramic views of the Danube and photogenic architecture.

Many of the parts on the outside are free to access, but we recommend paying the small fee to access the lookout points; you’ve never seen a view like this one!

Honorable mentions

The four locations we just mentioned are absolute musts. But if you have more time, we recommend that you check out:

• St. Stephen’s Basilica: Climb the dome for incredible views across the city.
• Buda Castle Funicular: A fun 10-minute ride up or down Buda Castle. Perfect crowd-pleaser for kids.
• Shoes on the Danube Memorial: Bear witness to the sixty pairs of old-fashioned shoes laid at the bank of the Danube to honor Hungarian Jews who were shot in a mass shooting in 1944.
• Chain Bridge: Budapest’s oldest bridge standing proudly over the Danube.
• Labyrinth of Buda Castle: 1,200 meters of caves and cellars under Buda Castle.

Getting Around Budapest: Public Transport and Walking Tips

Budapest is a modern European city with great transport links to help you get around. Let’s break it all down.

Metro

The metro is a popular way to get around as tickets are cheap. There are four metro lines:

• Line 1 (yellow line): Stops near numerous landmarks and historic sites so is most useful for tourists.
• Line 2 (red line): Stops near Hungarian Parliament and Fisherman’s Bastion.
• Line 3 (blue line): Stops near Great Market Hall and connects the bus like 200E from the airport to downtown.
• Line 4 (green line): Connects the city’s two main train stations Keleti Railway Station and Kelenföld Railway Station.

Price: Single journey 350 HUF. Unlimited free travel is included with the Budapest card.
Opening hours: 04:30 to 23:00 every day.

• Four metro lines (M1 is historic, like a mini subway).
• Trams 2 & 4/6 — great scenic rides along the river.
• Tickets ~350 HUF each; validate before boarding!

Trams

If you want to take the scenic route around town—literally—why not hop on the Budapest tram?

Over 40 tram lines run through Budapest. The most scenic routes are Tram Lines 2, 4 and 6, which run along the river.

Tip: Avoid rush hours in the morning and evening as trams can fill quickly.

• Price: Single journey 350 HUF. Unlimited free travel included with Budapest card.
• Opening hours: 04:30 to 23:00 every day.

Buses

Budapest is home to over 200 bus lines which are helpful for getting you to more residential areas. For example, where your accommodation may be lurking.

As a tourist, your most useful lines are 16, 16A, and 116. These cover most of the museums and attractions.

But hold on tight! Budapest bus drivers are known for driving quite fast through the narrow streets.

• Price: Single journey 350 HUF. Unlimited free travel included with Budapest card.
• Opening hours: 04:30 to 23:00 every day. Some night buses are available between 23:00 and 05:00.

Walking

The Buda side may be a hike with steep climbs, but the “Pest” side of Budapest is, thankfully, flat. It’s perfect for strolling the busy streets and comes alive at sunset.

The Danube Promenade walk is also popular with tourists. It takes you from the Chain Bridge to the Hungarian Parliament Building, with the glittering river alongside you.

River Cruises

One of Budapest’s most romantic ways to travel is to take a river cruise on the Danube.

At night, the city lights up, and the twinkling reflects off the water in the most spellbinding way.

Plus, for savvy travelers, budget-friendly options are available off-season.

Taxis & Private Transfers

There are plenty of Budapest taxis available. However, unlicensed cabs are common too.

Budget Travel Tips for Budapest: Saving Money on Sightseeing and Food

Looking for budget travel in Budapest? This section is for you. Here is a cheatsheet of ways to save when exploring the Hungarian capital:

• Free Walking Tours: Several are available throughout the year, covering highlights like the Old Town, Jewish quarter, and the Danube. Though they are “free,” they are tip-based, so bring cash in HUF to tip your guide. You can book online or ask your accommodation for recommendations.
• Off-Season Travel: Early Spring (April) and Autumn (late September to October) are great sweet spots for lower prices with mild weather.
• Ruin Bars: Szimpla Kert is a famous ruin bar with cheap drinks and food stalls.
• Bakeries and markets: Cut your food costs with hearty pastries and sandwiches from the local bakeries or food halls in the indoor markets.
• Exchange rate: The Hungarian Forint (HUF) is relatively inexpensive when compared to the euro or USD dollar. Use travel-happy credit cards like Wise and Revolut to get better currency exchange rates.

Cultural Etiquette and Practical Tips for Visiting Budapest

No essential Budapest travel guide is complete without a little information about the language, etiquette and customs. Here’s what you need to know:

Etiquette and customs in Budapest

Budapest doesn’t have a highly conservative culture. However, there are a few unwritten rules for respecting those around you.

• Tipping: Though tipping is not obligatory in Budapest, it is highly appreciated. The typical local tipping rate is 5-10%. Sometimes the tip is included in the bill as a service charge. For taxis and casual service, you can round up your fare.
• Public transport: Like in many European countries, there’s an unspoken rule that public transport is a quiet place to respect your fellow passengers. Eating and drinking on public transport is also frowned upon.
• Sacred spaces: Dress modestly when entering churches or other religious sites. This means covering your shoulders and not wearing shorts.
• Thermal baths etiquette: You’ll often be asked to wear a swimming cap in lap pools. A bathing suit is mandatory. Bringing your own towels and flip-flops is also encouraged. You cannot be naked in the public areas of the Szechenyi Baths and Pool.

Language: Basic Hungarian Phrases

Hungarian isn’t an easy language, and locals know that, but they appreciate it when tourists make even the smallest effort to speak their mother tongue. Here are some phrases you may find useful:

Practical Budapest Travel Tips for Tourists

To wrap up, here are some practical tips to help you maximize your trip to Budapest.

• Pay in Hungarian Forint (HUF): Though Hungary is in Europe, they do not use the euro. Some touristy spots like the thermal baths may accept euros, but this is the exception, not the rule.
• Buy a Budapest Card: A Budapest card is a tourist pass that entitles you to unlimited public transport travel and free access to many of the city’s main attractions. You can buy one here.
• Get an adapter if needed: Budapest uses European two-pin plugs (type C/F, 230V).
• Be wary of pickpockets: Generally, Budapest is a safe place with low instances of violent crime against tourists. However, pickpockets are experts at stealing your items in busy tourist areas and on public transport. Stay aware.
• Go for at least 2 days: While you can do a day-trip to Budapest, 48 hours will enable you to experience it much more.
• Pack for changing weather: Budapest can swing between sunny and stormy in one afternoon. Layers are your best friend.
• Bring a swimsuit (even in winter): The thermal baths are a must, so bring a swimsuit to take a dip regardless of season.
• Plan your itinerary around opening times: Many attractions close on Mondays, and some public transport times differ on evenings and weekends. Once you know the attractions you’d like to see, check online for the opening hours and plan accordingly.

If anyone knows the importance of a good pair of walking shoes, it’s Disney cast members. These pros easily clock tens of thousands of steps a day, whether they’re working long shifts around Cinderella’s Castle or spending a well-earned day off park-hopping with friends. We asked current and former Disney employees to share the walking shoes they rely on most, both on and off the clock. Hoka Clifton 9 Sneakers

There’s a reason Hokas are the go-to shoes at Disney parks, including for cast members. One current employee called the Hoka Clifton 9 Shoes “a game changer,” adding that “they’re like walking on marshmallows from rope drop to fireworks.” They’re lightweight, ultra-cushioned, and surprisingly supportive for long days on your feet.

Hoka Bondi 9 Sneakers

The Bondi 9 shoes are the second most popular Hoka pick among Disney employees. Hoka Arahi 7 Sneakers

With built-in stability and cushioned support, the Hoka Arahi 7 is a favorite among cast members who log serious steps. One park regular noted they hit 17,000 steps in these and still felt great. Amazon carries them in six color options—so whether you want to go neutral or bold, there’s a pair for you.

Nike Air Force 1 Shoes

You might not think of Nike Air Force 1s as theme park shoes, but they’re a quiet favorite among cast members. The classic style features Nike’s signature lightweight air cushioning and a streamlined look that works just as well with Minnie Mouse ears as it will with jeans and a tee back home.

Asics Gel-Nimbus 26 Sneakers

While Asics might fly under the radar, plenty of Disney insiders swear by them, particularly the Gel-Nimbus 26s. One former cast member said, “I averaged 25,000 to 35,000 steps per shift. These lasted longer than my Skechers and were lighter than most other options I tried.” The Gel-Nimbus 26 delivers soft cushioning and stability without extra weight.

Asics Gel-Cumulus 25 Sneakers

The Asics Gel-Cumulus 25 is a great option if you want a well-cushioned shoe without the premium price tag. One Amazon reviewer said they rival $200 shoes in comfort. With a smooth ride and breathable build, these sneakers are ideal for long walks and everyday wear alike.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24 Running Shoes

The latest version of Brooks’ popular Adrenaline GTS 24 stability shoe is also this year’s pick for the brand’s DisneyRun collection. With nitrogen-infused foam and a GuideRails support system, these are built for comfort, stability, and high mileage—perfect for marathon park days.

Nike Pegagus 41 Sneakers

The Pegasus 41 is one of Nike’s most beloved shoes for good reason. This latest version features a breathable upper and new ReactX foam for a more energy-returning, springy ride. Dual Air Zoom units add even more bounce, making them a great option for full days of walking (and snapping Disney pics for your Instagram).

New Balance Classic 327 Shoes

The New Balance 327 offers a great blend of comfort and style, especially if you’re not used to being on your feet all day. A lightweight upper and grippy outsole make these breathable and great for hikes, too. One reviewer even wore them to an all-day golf tournament and said they felt amazing.

On Cloud 6 Sneakers

Spotting On Cloud shoes at Disney parks has become common, and the Cloud 6 style is one of the most-worn styles. The newest version features a roomier step-in, a better heel fit, and the same signature cloud-like cushioning. They’re comfy, supportive, and easy to wear straight from the teacups to a fireworks show, and dinner after.

From the microclimate of the Isles of Scilly to the untouched beauty of the Scottish Highlands and the stunning beaches around Camber Sands, we have an incredible island, and there are honestly so many gems to visit. That being said, we all need a break away from the norm sometimes, and there are heaps of places to holiday in the UK that feel like you’ve left the country!

Honestly, there’s no need to hop on a plane to visit far-flung destinations if you don’t want to. I promise you, there are absolutely amazing places in the UK to visit that you won’t even believe are in the UK.

1.) Isles of Scilly

The Isles of Scilly are a small cluster of islands around 30 miles or so from the coastline of Cornwall. They are small, absolutely stunning and totally easy to get to. Not only that, the Isles of Scilly benefit from an incredibly warm microclimate due to the Gulf Stream that blows over from the Caribbean. This all means that the Scilly Islands can host many more tropical plant species than you’d normally expect in the UK.

You can easily see palm trees growing in the Tresco Abbey Garden (Google Maps pin) and even soak up the rays in the summer months on some of the islands like St Mary’s Island or St Martin’s Island. Best of all, the islands are all connected by small boats, almost like taxis, which you can hop on at your convenience.

Also, the great thing about the Isles of Scilly is that the beaches are crystal clear and typically very calm. This is due to the shallow waters around the islands themselves, and it makes for a great place for a dip, kayaking or even a little swim. The Isles of Scilly are stunning, and it feels like a little tropical island paradise. It’s one of those incredible UK locations that feel like you’re abroad, with a touch of British flair, of course.

2.) Camber Sands

Only around a two-hour drive from London, Camber Sands is an absolute gem of a coastline to visit that doesn’t even feel like the UK. With huge stretches of sandy shores, incredible dunes and a few good restaurants close by, it’s the perfect place to spend a day at the beach and totally forget you’re even in the UK.

Best of all, being on the south coast of England, Camber Sands benefits from warmer weather than, say, the northern regions of Great Britain, like Scotland.

3.) Portmeirion

No joke, Portmeirion doesn’t even feel like the UK! It’s an Italian town that’s perched on the north-west coastline of Wales, not too far from the town of Porthmadog. Built in the 20th Century, Portmeirion has come to be a firm favourite for people wanting a little escape without having to jump open a flight to Italy.

Once you’ve arrived in Portmeirion, you can wander around the quaint town (after paying a small fee for tickets) and stop off at the little cafes and stores along the way. Also, if you fancy a longer break away, make sure to book into the Portmeirion Hotel. This way, you can live your Italian dream holiday over a number of days. It really is a special place.

4.) Scottish Highlands

One of the many things that the Scottish Highlands does well is its unspoilt natural beauty. It’s an amazing region of Scotland to visit for a road trip. With heaps of lochs, untouched glens and its dramatic coastline, the Scottish Highlands almost feels like you’ve transported yourself to the fjords of Norway. It’s that dramatic and beautiful.

For a really great trip to the Scottish Highlands, follow the NC500 Route, which is an incredible road trip route that takes you through some of Scotland’s most enchanting scenery. Honestly, it’s incredible and it’s well worth spending a week or so here. Just watch out for the midges in the summer months. They can be intense in the warm weather, and they love to bite! Thankfully, they are nothing dangerous, just itchy and quite uncomfortable.

5.) St Michael’s Mount

Right in the heart of Cornwall is St Michael’s Mount – a beautiful tidal island that honestly feels like you’ve been transported over to France. Centuries old, St Michael’s Mount houses a fortified castle and grounds that you can visit for a day trip. It’s so worth it and totally feels like UK locations that feel like you’re abroad.

The whole area around St Michael’s Mount is stunning and picture-perfect! Though, always be aware that it can get quite busy in the summer holidays.

6.) Minack Theatre

Nestled on the north coast of Cornwall, the Minack Theatre is one of the UK’s most unique places to visit if you fancy a getaway without actually leaving the UK. You see, the Minack Theatre is an open-air venue where you can watch seasonal plays, which are incredible in the summer months when the weather is warm.

Plus, seeing a show with the sunset behind is just magical. It really is a special place and one spot you really shouldn’t miss for a little break from the norm. Honestly, it’s one of those UK locations that feel like you’re abroad and more specifically, Italy. It’s stunning. 

Just make sure to book tickets before arriving, shows and tours can sell out at peak times. 

7.) Lake Vyrnwy

If you want the feel of Lake Como or Lake Garda in Italy, make sure to head to Lake Vyrnwy (Google Maps pin) in Wales for a little getaway. Now, I can’t always promise you Italian summers, but the landscape around Lake Vyrnwy is stunning. It’s totally charming to visit and one of those places that’s great to explore by car. This way, you can explore the wider region here, and even dip into nearby Snowdonia National Park. It’s just a few miles away from Lake Vyrnwy and is stunning. 

Just be aware, this area is best visited by car, like I said. Trains can get you so far to Lake Vyrnwy, but it isn’t sustainable if you fancy travelling around the wider region of North Wales.

8.) Jurassic Coastline

What most people don’t realise is that you don’t need to visit far-flung places like Hawaii, Costa Rica or Alberta to find dinosaurs!

You see, the Jurassic Coastline is the perfect spot to go dinosaur hunting! Okay, I know they’re extinct, but the formation of the Jurassic Coastline dates back millions of years. To the Jurassic Period, no less. This was when dinosaurs ruled the world and plodded along the area (modern-day Britain) with other extinct species.

Today, you can head to Branscombe Beach (Google Maps pin) and a few others close by, where you can search the beach for fossils. With a little patience, I guarantee you’ll find a few. It took us about 25 minutes to find our first ones, but once we did, we kept spotting them over the next few hours. Best of all, you can keep the fossils you find! The only thing you’re not allowed to do is dig into the cliffs.

To make your chances even better at finding fossils, head to the region after a storm. This is when the coastline has been worn down and new fossils are dislodged. It’s so exciting and a totally fun activity to do with the family.

9.) Belmond Train

If you want to ride the Orient Express, without leaving the UK, then head for the British Pullman train from London. You see, Belmond’s British Pullman train is a totally luxe train that departs from London Victoria on day trips around the Garden of England (Kent). They depart each week, and you can book seasonal tours that stop off at stately homes, vineyards or just a round trip to London. On board, you’ll be served lashings of champagne and the most incredible lunch that is honestly so good. It’s one of those UK locations that feels like abroad and is just as much about the journey as it is the destination.

If that sounds like fun to you, they also have the newer Britannic Explorer train where you sleep onboard and discover destinations like Wales, the Lake District and Cornwall.

Finally, if Scotland is calling, join the Royal Scotsman train. It heads through the Highlands of Scotland. It honestly feels like you’re visiting uncharted territory – the landscape (and the train) are beautiful.

10.) Bamburgh Beach

Nestled on the stunning Northumberland coastline, Bamburgh Beach is an absolutely stunning and unspoilt place to visit. It feels like one of those UK locations that feels like abroad, and you could be forgiven for thinking you’re arrived on the Danish coastline. Now, its big draw is its huge sandy beach and dunes, which stretch for miles.

Not only that, you’ve got the incredible Bamburgh Castle that’s just off the dunes themselves. It’s one of Northumberland’s most iconic castles, and it’s so worth visiting whilst you’re in the area. Plus, you can also visit the nearby Farne Islands (which we did) for a few-hour trip. It’s so worth it if you’re already in Northumberland.

Now, we feel it’s best to explore this area of Northumberland by car. This way, you can stop off at all the other castles, beaches and coves along the way. Plus, you can then drive over to the tidal island of Holy Island, which is where the Viking Age started.

Getting tattooed here wasn’t just about art for me—it was about reclaiming my body on my terms.

Where to Stay: Hotel Indigo Downtown Vancouver

Finding truly inclusive hotels can be challenging, but Hotel Indigo Downtown Vancouver stands out as an exception. “At Hotel Indigo, inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do. We strive to create an environment where every guest feels seen, valued, and celebrated,” reps for the hotel said in a statement. From the moment I arrived, I felt the difference—the staff was welcoming, the seating was comfortable, and the entire space was designed for all kinds of travelers, not just those who fit a narrow mold. It was a place where I truly felt appreciated and respected.

Where to Move Your Body: All Bodies Strong

The fitness industry often excludes fat people, but All Bodies Strong is changing that. “We create a size-inclusive, accessible fitness space where people of all body types can explore weightlifting, boxing, yoga, and self-defense,” Christina and Will, the co-owners of All Bodies Strong, shared. The trainers, all fat-bodied athletes, bring years of experience in modifying workouts and offering emotional support. Their mission is to help people feel seen, safe, and celebrated as they move their bodies in a space that values diverse bodies and fitness journeys.

Where to Get Your Hair Done: Chameleon Salon

Chameleon Salon is a haven where inclusivity is the top priority. “As two people in larger bodies, we understood the limitations of traditional salons,” Nicole and Madelyn, owners of Chameleon Salon, noted. “We sourced everything with care, from chairs rated up to 800 pounds to genderless pricing, capes for all sizes, and wheelchair access.” With nine years of dedication, Chameleon is now a size-inclusive, queer-affirming, and gender-inclusive space where everybody can enjoy self-care without judgment. They aim to create a fun, comfortable environment where every guest feels supported and valued.

Where to Shop: I Want Seconds

I Want Seconds was created to make fashion accessible to everyone, especially Portland’s fat community. “Our goal was to provide a place for fat people to find affordable, inclusive clothing,” says Kelsey, owner of I Want Seconds. “Glorifying fatness is just an added bonus.” The shop is filled with art celebrating fat bodies, radiating joy and self-expression. Walking in feels like stepping into a celebration of fat joy, where every item and image affirms that fatness is beautiful and worth celebrating.

Where to Get Pampered: Dahlia Wax Bar

Self-care is about more than just looking good—it’s about feeling seen and respected. Dahlia Wax Bar does exactly that, creating an environment where every client is valued and empowered.

“Accessibility and inclusivity in self-care spaces are so important because everyone deserves to feel comfortable and cared for,” Brittany, the founder of Dahlia Wax Bar, said. “We’ve created a space where people can show up as they are, without judgment. Self-care should be empowering and accessible to everyone.”

The space is thoughtfully designed with accessibility in mind, offering a truly welcoming experience for all bodies.

Where to Connect Through Art: Hopscotch

Art has the power to break down barriers, and Hopscotch offers one of the most unique, immersive art experiences in Portland.

“We’ve curated an experience that’s immersive through light and sound, allowing each guest to engage with our installations in a meaningful way. By offering a unique experience for all, we break down barriers, foster connection, and celebrate the transformative power of art,” Gage Martin from Hopscotch added.

Where to Relax and Practice Self-care: Tough as Nails

Tough as Nails excels at creating inclusive self-care spaces, understanding the struggle of finding places designed for larger bodies. “Self-care often shifts from joy to trying to fit in,” Chris, founder of Tough as Nails, said. “I wanted my salon to be welcoming, bright, and accessible to all.” The salon is thoughtfully designed for comfort, allowing guests to relax without worrying about fitting in. The goal is simple: to create an environment where everyone can embrace and nourish themselves as they are, in the present moment.
