Porsche aims for profits with new gas and plug-in hybrid cars

0

  • Due to slowing EV growth, Porsche is now focusing on developing additional gas and plug-in hybrid models
  • Costs associated with the development have led Porsche to cut its profit forecast for 2025
  • Porsche may terminate the contracts early for the bosses of its finance and sales divisions

Porsche has warned that its 2025 profits will take a major hit due to additional investment required to expand its lineup with new gas and plug-in hybrid models.

The automaker, while announcing on Feb. 6 some preliminary financial figures for 2024, said the additional investment, which will also include funding for “battery activities” within Porsche’s own subsidiaries, is expected to total around 800 million euros (approximately $826 million).

The hit to profits is expected to reduce profit margins to around 10-12% in 2025, Porsche said, which is well under the automaker’s mid-term target of 17-19%.

Porsche didn’t indicate what new gas and plug-in hybrid models are coming. However, Porsche is rumored to be considering the development of a new gas version of its top-selling Macan, where previously none was planned. It’s possible the automaker could also do this with the 718 Boxster and Cayman in the future, which are currently slated to go the electric-only route when a new generation arrives later this year.

2025 Porsche Taycan

2025 Porsche Taycan

The need to develop new gas and plug-in hybrid models comes after Porsche, in 2024, abandoned its plan for EVs to make up 80% of sales by 2030. Due to the current slowdown in growth for EV demand, particularly in the luxury sector, Porsche now plans to continue offering gas engines well into the next decade, including V-8s.

Sales of Porsche’s debut EV, the Taycan, dropped 49% to end 2024 at just 20,836 units. However, part of the reason for the slowdown can be attributed to buyers waiting for the refreshed Taycan that was unveiled during the year.

Porsche’s sales also tanked in China, which is the biggest market for EVs. Porsche sold 56,887 units in China in 2024, down 28%. This was the primary contributor to a drop in worldwide sales in 2024 by about 3%, to 310,718 units. As a result of the poor performance, Porsche on Feb. 1 announced it was in talks with its finance and IT chief, Lutz Meschke, and its sales and marketing chief, Detlev von Platen, about early termination of their contracts.

2025 Chicago Auto Show LogoWhile it’s only been on the market since January, Jeep is already expanding the roster of its new fully electric SUV. The 2025 Jeep Wagoneer S Limited made its debut at the 2025 Chicago Auto Show. The Limited joins the initial “Launch Edition” as a slightly lower-cost entry to lineup.

These Wagoneer S models will include a blackout roof and mirror caps, unique exterior badging, 20-inch wheels, dual-pane panoramic sunroof and 10-way power adjustable heated front seats. The dashboard can be equipped to be nearly all screen, with displays for the driver and front passenger; Jeep claims “maximum usable screen space of more than 45 inches, best-in-class among EVs.”

Power

The Limited will feature a pair of electric motors for each axle. Standard horsepower is 500 with projected 0-60-mph acceleration of 4.0 seconds. An over-the-air update due later in 2025 will add 100 more horsepower, which Jeep says will reduce the 0-60 time to 3.4 seconds. Power gets to said motors via a 400-volt, 100-kWh battery pack, resulting in a maximum estimated driving range of 270-303 miles, depending on tire selection. All Wagoneer S vehicles support DC fast charging, which can juice the battery from 20-80 percent in 23 minutes.

Prices and Trim Levels

Dealer and customer orders are now open for the 2025 Jeep Wagoneer S Limited, which has a starting price of $66,995, including destination fee. This puts it $5,000 cheaper than the Launch Edition, which is available now. All models are eligible for the maximum potential federal tax credit of $7,500.

CG Says

It’s nice to see Jeep offering a less-costly version of the Wagoneer S. Is this new Limited grade going to move the needle in a significant way for the struggling brand? Probably not, but every little bit helps.

Zeekr 009 vs Mansory Rolls-Royce Cullinan

0

This is probably something you weren’t expecting to see – a Mansory-modified Rolls-Royce Cullinan drag racing a battery-electric Zeekr 009 people mover. It’s Great Britain taking on China to see which is quickest down the quarter-mile.

Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

The cars

While they come from different parts of the world, these two luxury people chariots aim for the same thing – moving people in luxury and style. Despite its portly 2660kg kerb weight before options and Mansory kit, the Cullinan is still lighter than the 2870kg 009.

Zeekr 009

Available either as a six- or seven-seater, the Zeekr 009 a fully electric people mover. Zeekr sits under the Geely umbrella, along with brands like Volvo and Polestar.

It’s powered by a pair of electric motors, producing 450kW of power and 693Nm of torque. While it’s available in the one go-fast spec in Australia, it’s offered overseas with an even more powerful dual-motor setup making a stupid 580kW of power and just over 800Nm of torque.

Priced from $135,900 before on-road costs in Australia, it’s powered by a mammoth 116kWh battery pack.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan

‘Man, I’m Sorry’ – it’s what it sounds like when you say Mansory ten times fast… It’s also what a lot of people say when they see a Mansory-fettled car. This time the kit is fitted to a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the last car on earth you’d think would need some Mansory work done to it.

This particular car has a full Mansory body kit (along with interior enhancements), as well as a new exhaust system designed to help the V12 engine breathe better, and of course, it sits lower on 24-inch alloy wheels.

It uses a 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V12 that produces 420kW of power and 850Nm of torque. It has eight on the tree – an eight-speed automatic transmission with column shifter – and has an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.2 seconds. The Rolls costs around 10 times more than the Zeekr 009, just for reference.

The results

Well – this was way closer than we thought it was going to be. On paper, both cars are pretty well matched when it comes to acceleration times, but it’s the Zeekr’s electric drivetrain that just nudged it ahead of the Rolls-Royce.

Zeekr 0094.94s2.92s13.05s @ 170.34km/h

The Zeekr will appear in another drag race with a competitor a little closer to home, so keep an eye out for that one!

Battery replacement the next step?

0

  • Damage to the batteries’ separator could lead to shorts and/or fires
  • Recall campaigns from Stellantis, Ford, and Audi allow replacement of battery packs
  • New paperwork filed by battery supplier Samsung SDI says the issue remains under investigation

Plug-in hybrids from multiple automakers have been recalled due a potential issue with vehicles’ Samsung SDI-supplied battery cells that could cause loss of power or fires. And new paperwork filed with the federal government this week suggests that the issue has not yet been fully resolved.

A total of 180,196 vehicles are affected in the U.S., including 155,096 from Stellantis, 20,484 from Ford, and 4,616 from Audi. Each automaker, in recent months, already announced an individual recall for its respective vehicles.

2023 Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid

2023 Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid

Stellantis issued a battery-related recall for the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe SUVs last October. Audi then recalled its Q5 and A7 plug-in hybrids in December, and Ford then issued a recall for plug-in hybrid versions of the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair SUVs in January.

All of these vehicles have Samsung SDI cells that are broadly similar, according to documents filed with the NHTSA, which emphasizing that exact specifications are still unique to each automaker. Each automaker told the safety agency that defects in these cells could lead to internal short circuits or fires. Ford and Stellantis also reported damage in the separator layer between the cathode and anode in some cells, which could lead to short circuits and fires. Ford and Audi both said internal analysis pointed to manufacturing defects, and both said they would install new software as a temporary remedy.

2022 Audi Q5 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid

2022 Audi Q5 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid

These new documents filed by Samsung SDI don’t expand the list of vehicles recalled, but they underscore that the issue lacks a clear resolution, as of yet. In paperwork filed February 5, Samsung SDI calls the issue “still under investigation” for both Ford and Audi. A letter from the NHTSA, reacting to the Samsing SDI filing and dated February 6, asks the battery supplier for a “summary of all warranty claims, field or service reports, and other information.”

In a statement provided to Green Car Reports Friday, Jeep parent Stellantis underscored that for its vehicles, the issue has been remedied. “The remedy includes a software update and, if necessary, replacement of the high-voltage battery, both provided at no cost to owners,” it stated, pointing to notification letters sent out in December. “Customer safety is our highest priority, and we appreciate the patience of our customers as we worked to resolve this matter and implement a solution for all affected vehicles.”

For now, owners of affected vehicles can call the respective automakers’ customer service departments for more information. Stellantis can be reached at 800-853-1403, Audi at 800-253-2834, and Ford at 866-436-7332.

2025 Jeep Wagoneer S Limited arrives for $66,995

0

  • The 2025 Jeep Wagoneer S lineup expands with a new Limited trim
  • It joins the previously available Launch Edition trim and starts at $66,995, including destination
  • Limited lowers the Wagoneer S’s base price by $5,000, lowers output to 500 hp

Jeep is making its electric midsize SUV, the Wagoneer S, more accessible for the 2025 model year with the introduction of a new Limited trim.

The 2025 Wagoneer S Limited is priced from $66,995, including a $1,795 destination charge, and is available to order. It joins the Launch Edition, which was the sole trim available for 2024. Pricing for the 2025 Wagoneer S Launch Edition hasn’t been announced but the 2024 model was priced from $71,995.

The Limited trim comes with black paint for the roof and side mirror caps, plus 20-inch aluminum wheels, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, 10-way heated front seats, Jeep’s Selec-Terrain drive mode selector, and the same three-screen setup found in the Launch Edition. The setup includes a 12.3-inch central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.2-inch front-passenger screen.

Some of the available features include a McIntosh audio system and a black appearance package (late availability). The Limited trim also introduces a new Hydro Blue exterior color and Arctic Gray interior color.

Power comes from the same dual-motor all-wheel-drive system found in the Launch Edition, but to match the Launch Edition’s peak 600 hp the Limited will require a Propulsion Boost Package that will be available as an over-the-air update at a later date. Otherwise the Limited makes 500 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque.

Also common to both Wagoneer S trims is a 100-kwh battery. EPA range estimates for the Limited haven’t been published but the battery has a maximum estimate of 303 miles in the Launch Edition. It also has the ability to charge from 20-80% in 23 minutes when using a DC fast-charger.

Included with each purchase or lease is a 48-amp Level 2 home charger or public charging credits of equal value through parent company Stellantis’ Free2move Charge ecosystem.

While the Limited trim represents a more accessible entry point into the Wagoneer S lineup, it remains one of the pricier options within Jeep’s typical model structure. This suggests that even more affordable trims could be on the way. Additionally, Jeep previously hinted at a more rugged Trailhawk variant, revealing a concept version last year that could cater to off-road enthusiasts.

The Wangsa Maju Puspakom centre will shut down by June following a directive from the ministry of transport, Malay Mail has reported.

The closure of the inspection centre is to make way for a new facility to be developed on the same site, Puspakom chief executive Mahmood Razak Bahman was quoted by the news outlet as saying. Other Puspakom inspection centres in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan will get adjusted service hours in order to manage to impact of the Wangsa Maju outlet closure, he said.

“Wangsa Maju Puspakom inspects around 800 vehicles daily, so we need to revise operating hours at other branches to accommodate the reduced capacity,” Mahmood Razak said, and also confirmed that the road transport department (JPJ) had approved a replacement inspection centre in Bukit Beruntung, Rawang scheduled for completion in December next year.

“The initial plan was to close in December 2026, but we agreed to an earlier shutdown as this is one of our busiest branches in a high-density area. While the early closure presents challenges, we will offset this by extending operating hours at selected branches,” Mahmood Razak said.

The CEO of Puspakom also urged vehicle owners to have their vehicle inspections carried out early, up to 14 days prior to expiry of their vehicle’s permit, in order to avoid issues at the last minute should their vehicles fail the test. “By testing earlier, as permitted by authorities, owners have more time to address any issues before returning for a retest,” he said.

Today, the ministry of transport announced that it has appointed three new vehicle inspection companies besides Puspakom. The three companies approved by the MoT and JPJ are Wawasan Bintang in Port Klang, Gua Musang in Kelantan and Mersing in Johor; Pakatan Petroleum in Rawang and Temerloh in Pahang; and Beriman Gold in Kuching and Serian in Sarawak.

Applications were open from July 1 to October 31 last year, bringing a total of 12 entries from interested firms. Those which were approved were selected on main criteria including being locally owned, having a strong financial standing and having a minimum paid-up capital of RM10 million.

The Wangsa Maju Puspakom centre was among the earliest outlets by the company, opened in 1995. With six inspection lanes located on a 4.3-acre site, the centre was built at a cost of RM10 million.

How to Keep Your Hybrid Toyota Running Smoothly for Years – The Car Spotter Blog

0

Partnered Post

Hybrid Toyotas are known for their efficiency, reliability, and smooth driving experience. But like any car, they need proper care to stay in peak condition.

Here’s how to keep your Hybrid Toyota running smoothly for years.

1. Choose Quality Hybrid Toyota Car Parts

Using the right parts is essential for maintaining a hybrid. While it might be tempting to opt for cheaper aftermarket alternatives, they don’t always match the quality and durability of genuine Toyota parts. Hybrid-specific components, such as the battery, inverter, and electric motor, are designed to work seamlessly with your car’s system. Genuine hybrid Toyota car parts ensure optimal performance, better longevity, and fewer issues down the track. If you’re replacing anything—from brake pads to air filters—always check if it’s recommended for hybrids.

2. Maintain Your Hybrid Battery

The hybrid battery is the heart of your vehicle’s electric system, and taking care of it will maximise its lifespan. Toyota hybrid batteries are built to last, but they still require attention.

3. Stay on Top of Oil and Fluid Changes

Even though hybrid engines use less fuel, they still need regular oil changes. In fact, since hybrid engines switch between petrol and electric power, the engine may sit idle for long periods, which can cause oil to degrade over time. Using high-quality, hybrid-specific engine oil ensures smooth performance.

Other fluids, like coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid, also play a crucial role in keeping the car running efficiently. Hybrid cooling systems are more complex than those in standard petrol cars, so keeping up with scheduled fluid changes is essential.

4. Drive Smart to Reduce Wear and Tear

Hybrids are built for efficiency, and the way you drive affects their performance. Adopting good driving habits will not only help your Toyota last longer but also improve fuel economy.

5. Check the Tyres Regularly

Good tyre maintenance is crucial for any vehicle, but hybrids rely on properly inflated tyres for maximum efficiency. Under-inflated tyres create extra resistance, forcing the car to use more fuel and battery power. Check the pressure regularly and keep them at the recommended levels.

Wheel alignment and rotation are also important. Uneven wear can impact handling and efficiency, so make sure you follow Toyota’s recommended tyre rotation schedule.

6. Keep the Hybrid Cooling System Clean

Hybrid vehicles have unique cooling systems for both the engine and battery. If these systems aren’t working properly, the car can overheat, leading to expensive repairs. Dust and debris can block cooling vents, reducing airflow to the hybrid battery. Regularly cleaning the vents, particularly if you drive in dusty areas, helps maintain battery efficiency.

7. Stick to Your Service Schedule

Regular servicing is the best way to prevent issues before they become costly repairs. Toyota provides a specific maintenance schedule for hybrids, which includes battery checks, fluid changes, and software updates. Sticking to this schedule ensures your car stays in top condition and helps catch potential problems early.

Toyota hybrid systems also have special diagnostic tools that help technicians monitor battery health and system performance. Routine check-ups will give you peace of mind that everything is running as it should.

8. Keep the Software Updated

Hybrid Toyotas rely on advanced software to manage the engine, battery, and braking system. Toyota periodically releases software updates to improve efficiency and performance. During servicing, ask if your car’s software is up to date. Keeping everything running on the latest version ensures you’re getting the best from your hybrid.

9. Protect Your Car’s Exterior and Interior

While the hybrid system is the star of the show, don’t forget about general upkeep. Keeping your car clean helps protect the paint, and regular waxing prevents damage from the elements. Inside, avoiding excess weight helps reduce strain on the battery and fuel efficiency. Simple habits like keeping unnecessary items out of the boot can make a difference.

10. Use the Right Fuel and Charging Habits

Most Toyota hybrids don’t need special fuel, but using high-quality petrol can improve performance and engine cleanliness. Avoid ethanol-rich fuels unless specified in the owner’s manual. While Toyota hybrids don’t require external charging, plug-in hybrid models do. If you own a plug-in hybrid, using a proper home charger and avoiding frequent fast charging will help prolong battery life.

Give Your Hybrid the Care It Deserves

Hybrid Toyotas are built to last, but they need proper care to stay efficient and reliable. Choosing quality parts, maintaining the battery, keeping up with fluid changes, and driving smart all contribute to a longer-lasting hybrid.

2026 Ferrari 296 Versione Speciale: Hardcore swan song spied

0

  • A prototype for a hardcore version of the Ferrari 296 has been spotted
  • The car is expected to feature increased horsepower and reduced weight
  • Ferrari typically launches such hardcore models near the end of a product line’s lifecycle

Ferrari engineers have been spotted testing a hardcore version of the 296 supercar.

Such hardcore models, referred to internally as Versione Speciale—Italian for “Special Version”—typically arrive toward the end of a model’s run. The last one was the SF90 XX Stradale, launched in 2023, marking the end of the SF90’s production. A successor to the SF90 is also currently in testing.

The 296 first debuted in 2021 as the 296 GTB coupe. The GTS convertible followed a year later, and the GT3 and Challenge race cars arrived the year after that.

The hardcore version is expected to debut later this year, given a Ferrari’s typical five-year lifecycle before it undergoes a major update or redesign. Rumors suggest the unveiling could take place as soon as April.

2026 Ferrari 296 Versione Speciale spy shots – Photo via Baldauf

The prototype is heavily camouflaged, but a new front fascia design and revised exhaust tip appear to be present. Changes to the engine cover are also expected.

Chassis enhancements, weight-saving modifications, and additional power are also likely. The current 296 GTB coupe features a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 paired with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, sending power exclusively to the rear wheels. The system produces a peak output of 818 hp, enabling 0-62 mph acceleration in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of over 205 mph. A 7.45-kwh battery allows for a small electric-only range.

It’s likely that the GTS convertible will also receive the Versione Speciale treatment. The hardcore convertible is expected to arrive six months to a year after the coupe, though both versions could launch simultaneously.

In addition to this hardcore 296 and the SF90’s successor, Ferrari has been spotted testing prototypes for its first electric vehicle and a successor to the Roma. The automaker plans to launch a total of six models this year, one of which will be the EV.

Evolution Ray: Kaoru Koshimizu’s Reimagined C1 Corvette

0

If you’re going to build a cool car, you’d better give it a cool name.

There’s so much to love about hot rodders. The can-do-will-do, belt-it-until-it-breaks attitude they have towards building and racing cars, the sense of community that encourages the wild and ingenious, and of course, the badass names they give their creations.

TobyThyerPhotography-32

I recently met up with lifelong ‘rodder Kaoru Koshimizu to check out his Evolution Ray, a C1 Chevrolet Corvette with a fully reworked powertrain and running gear, plus a few party tricks up its sleeves.

TobyThyerPhotography-1

Tucked away in a suburban area of Yokohama, Koshimizu-san runs a bar and a taiyaki shop alongside his automotive interests. At the bottom of the hill is his first garage-turned-workshop, which houses Koshimizu-san’s original-condition C2 Stingray.

TobyThyerPhotography-38

Inside Koshimizu-san’s taiyaki shop, you’ll find delicious fish-shaped sweets filled with sweet red beans. Take the stairs, and you end up in his cosy speakeasy, which extends over the new garage.

TobyThyerPhotography-64
TobyThyerPhotography-36
TobyThyerPhotography-65

The aircraft hangar-style kit was shipped over from the States and built by Koshimizu-san himself. His background in interior design, specialising in shop displays, is obvious. There’s a lot packed into a small space, but none of the areas feel cramped.

TobyThyerPhotography-45

Koshimizu-san’s first car – a 1969 C3 Corvette that he purchased when he was just 20 – is parked next to the C1. He can’t explain where the desire to drive an American car came from, but it wasn’t from his family or friends. I guess for a kid in Japan during the 1970s and ’80s, a Corvette was the AC/DC to a Nissan Fairlady’s Air Supply. It was shoulder pads versus elbow patches. In a time of excess, the ‘Vette was king.

TobyThyerPhotography-63

Inspired by the race cars built by Greenwood Corvettes and the like, Koshimizu-san has widened the C3 with a modified kit from the US to accommodate 13-inch Halibrand wheels in the rear. It’s powered by a 427ci big block V8 with four Weber carbs mated to a Doug Nash 4+1 transmission.

TobyThyerPhotography-17

The C3 is feature-worthy in itself, but as it’s not currently registered, we couldn’t terrorise the neighbourhood in it. Koshimizu-san did fire it up for me, though, and, yes, it’s got more chop than Jackie Chan.

TobyThyerPhotography-21

This is what I’d come to see: Koshimizu-san’s C1 Corvette.

TobyThyerPhotography-6

The C1 is muscle car royalty. It’s the grandfather of two-seater American sports coupes, and every Corvette shares its DNA, right up to the current twin-turbo 1,064hp ZR1. That said, the first run of hand-built, fibreglass-bodied C1 Corvettes were about as sporty as a sloth in a swimming pool. Their anaemic 235ci straight-six engines were far from exciting, and rudimentary drum brakes made them hard to stop quickly from speed. Handling was nothing to write home about either, no surprise considering the driveline was a parts bin collection from various passenger cars.

TobyThyerPhotography-25

In 1957, a 265ci small block V8 and 3-speed manual transmission saved the Corvette from extinction, but it wasn’t until ’65 that disc brakes became standard. Probably a good thing because, by that time, the C2 was making 425hp.

What the C1 did have was its looks. Petite proportions and delicate details like the rear fins made its shortcomings somewhat forgivable, especially after the newer models had redeemed the Corvette name.

TobyThyerPhotography-28

So there’s a need to touch the body. Unless, of course, you’re a slightly eccentric interior designer who runs a bar and a taiyaki shop. In that case, a hydraulically operated clamshell front end and a boot with an electric motor might be a nice little project.

TobyThyerPhotography-47

The C1’s bonnet originally hinged forwards, but Koshimizu-san has taken that further and turned the whole front end of the car’s fibreglass body into a single piece. The boot is opened with an electric motor, revealing the first of many performance upgrades for the Evolution Ray. Replacing the rear leaf springs and solid axle is a fully custom pushrod suspension system, all designed in-house.

TobyThyerPhotography-42
TobyThyerPhotography-69

Because the C1 never had mounting points for independent suspension in the rear, Koshimizu-san was able to start with a blank slate. He also wanted to create some kind of party piece in the rear to match the party in the front, which he designed and built too. The front end features a custom-mounted C3 chassis frame with bespoke control arms, Koni shocks, Swift springs, and C3 hub assemblies.

TobyThyerPhotography-41

The new suspension components would have little meaning if left to their own devices, so Koshimizu-san has tied the front and rear together with a hidden roll bar. That’s the handling taken care of.

TobyThyerPhotography-48

Press a button on the dash, and the clamshell opens to reveal a 383ci big block Chevy V8 fed by twin Demon 650cfm carbs that sends 500hp to a Richmond 5-speed transmission and C3 diff.

After cruising down the road, slung right down onto the floorplan with the chopped glass windshield not shielding any of the wind, I don’t think this car is winning any prizes on any autocross days. The engine torque makes the car feel like it’s ripping itself apart at even the lightest of throttle. But maybe that’s the beauty, the raw visceral energy of hot rodding – living on the edge and enjoying every oil-soaked minute of it.
