Audi Q6 E-Tron off-road concept debuts with portal axles

0

The Audi Q6 E-Tron electric crossover wasn’t designed for hardcore off-road use, but a new concept car explores the possibilities of a more rugged EV from the German automaker.

Audi posted photos of the concept—dubbed the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road—on social media Thursday, but didn’t provide much detail on its features. But it appears to use portal axles to raise ground clearance and allow for the biggest-possible tires.

Unlike conventional axles, portal axles situate the wheel hub below the axle hub, separated by gears. In addition to increasing ground clearance, portal axles allow for a wider stance, and the additional set of gears allows for lower gearing beyond the differential.

Mercedes-Benz previously used portal axles for a concept version of its EQC electric crossover, which was originally slated for U.S. sales but never made it here. That concept scouted the trail for Mercedes’ electric G-Class, but it’s unclear if Audi has a similar off-road production model in mind.

Audi teased a more rugged EV in 2023 with the Activesphere concept, which was based on the same Premium Platform Electric (PPE) as the Q6 E-Tron. PPE, which brings high-power charging hardware pioneered in the Audi E-Tron GT to more EVs, is also shared with the A6 E-Tron sedan and the electric version of the Porsche Macan.

The Q6 E-Tron Off-Road is based on the sleeker Sportback body style of the Q6 E-Tron, which hasn’t reached the U.S. yet. Only the standard SUV body style is currently available to order in the U.S., as a 2025 model, with a $65,095 base price including a $1,295 destination charge. It offers up to 321 miles of EPA, and a first drive in California indicated achieving something close to that in the real world isn’t a stretch.

BMW E92/E90 M3 Buyers Guide

0

Praised by enthusiasts and revered across the automotive world, the BMW M3 has long been the benchmark for performance sedans, coupes, and convertibles. From the iconic E30 to the aggressive E92, each generation has upheld the original ///M philosophy in its own unique way, consistently pushing the boundaries of what a performance car can achieve.

When BMW decided to equip the E92 M3 with a V8 and add some weight, purists were initially skeptical. However, the E92 quickly silenced critics by delivering a driving experience that upheld the M3’s legacy while bringing something new to the table.

Debuting in 2008 as a coupe, followed by the E93 convertible and the E90 sedan, the E92 M3 expanded the lineup while staying true to its motorsport roots. Despite the larger engine, BMW engineers worked their magic to keep the weight remarkably close to its predecessor.

At the heart of the E92 is the 4.0-liter naturally aspirated S65 V8, producing 414 hp at a screaming 8,300 RPM. It achieves 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds with the optional DCT transmission, rivaling many contemporary supercars. While fuel economy isn’t its strong suit, the E92 still managed a respectable 22.8 MPG. The only chink in its armor? A modest 295 lb-ft of torque, comparable to the previous E46 M3’s inline-six.

Even with its V8 powerplant, the E92 M3 maintains a balanced weight profile: the coupe comes in just under 3,700 lbs, the sedan at 3,725 lbs, and the convertible at a hefty 3,990 lbs. The coupe and sedan are the clear enthusiasts’ choices, delivering the sharpest dynamics and the purest M3 experience.

The convertible, while enjoyable, comes with added bulk that slightly dulls its edge. Trust us—stick with the coupe or sedan, and you’ll be grinning from ear to ear.

While the mantra “real drivers use manuals” often echoes in enthusiast circles, BMW’s 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) deserves praise. A monumental improvement over the clunky SMG gearbox in the E46, the DCT delivers lightning-fast shifts, clocking in at just 60 milliseconds.

It’s smooth in traffic and razor-sharp on the track, making the E92 M3 significantly faster in competitive driving scenarios. That said, the 6-speed manual still holds a special place for purists. For those who love the art of heel-toe downshifting and the satisfaction of full control, the manual transmission provides an irreplaceable connection to the car. Considering the rarity of manuals in today’s market, it’s a timeless choice worth celebrating.

Slide into the driver’s seat of the E92 M3, and you’ll find yourself embraced by supportive bolstered seats that strike the perfect balance between comfort and performance. Forget about fitting your 32 oz Big Gulp in the cupholders—this is a driver-focused cockpit meant for apexes, not convenience. The back seats are usable but better suited for short trips or smaller passengers. Visually, the interior exudes understated luxury with a touch of sportiness.

Leather options like Fox Red or classic Black not only elevate the aesthetic but also enhance resale value. The early iDrive system was infamous for its clunky interface, but models from 2009 onward feature the improved CIC system with a high-resolution display, making it both more functional and visually appealing.

In the fiercely competitive performance segment, the E92 M3 faced off against some formidable rivals. The Audi RS5 brought all-wheel drive and a high-revving 4.2-liter V8, offering more traction but less agility. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG delivered a thundering 6.2-liter V8, with massive torque and a more aggressive persona, though at the cost of precision handling.

The Porsche Cayman S, while smaller and less powerful, appealed to purists with its mid-engine balance and scalpel-like cornering ability. Each competitor had its strengths, but the M3 consistently stood out as the best all-around package, blending precision, performance, and everyday usability.

The E92 M3 is a love letter to naturally aspirated engines, manual transmissions, and pure driving pleasure. While it marked the end of an era for high-revving V8s in BMW’s M cars, it remains a modern classic—a car that bridges the gap between old-school charm and contemporary performance. Whether you choose the coupe, sedan, or even the convertible, the E92 M3 ensures you’ll be behind the wheel of the ultimate driving machine.

BMW E92/E90 M3 Price and Values

The Best BMW E92/E90 M3 to Buy

The E92 M3 debuted in 2008 and quickly gained a reputation as one of BMW’s most exciting M cars. Today, the E92 M3 continues to attract enthusiasts who admire its naturally aspirated V8—a defining feature that remains true to the DNA of its M3 predecessors.

Choosing the right E92 M3 at the correct price is important, but equally crucial is selecting the right model year. With any car, it’s wise to aim for a post-facelift or later production model, as manufacturers often address early production issues over time. For the E9X M3, we recommend choosing a 2009 model year or later, as BMW had resolved some early issues by this time. Regardless of the year, the E9X M3 is a well-engineered sports car, and models from any year after 2008 remain solid choices.

While the ZCP Competition Package offers enhancements like revised suspension, lower ride height, and unique wheels, it may not justify the cost for those planning to modify their cars.

Enthusiasts often replace wheels and suspension with aftermarket options anyway, making ZCP unnecessary for some. However, purists who appreciate factory upgrades may find value in the package. Features like BMW Apps, introduced in 2011, and the start/stop technology don’t offer enough appeal to make later models more desirable in our opinion.

For those interested in updating earlier models, swapping the older tail lights on 2008-2009 models for the newer LED tail lights from 2010-2013 is an easy upgrade. Used LED tail lights can often be found on forums for under $500, giving earlier models a more modern appearance.

For market stability, the 2008 to 2013 model years offer excellent potential for hacking and are unlikely to lose value if you select the right example.

Don’t forget that the condition and mileage of the vehicle are crucial factors to consider when buying an E9X M3. Well-maintained cars with lower mileage tend to hold their value better and offer more reliable performance.

It’s important to conduct thorough research, compare prices, and look for models with a documented service history if you are considering purchasing a E9X M3 with long-term value in mind.

Conclusion

The BMW M3 is a true engineering marvel, capable of being a track beast, a canyon carver, or even a reliable daily driver when properly maintained. At its core, the E9X M3’s engine and transmission have remained largely unchanged throughout its production run.

While options and packages varied over the years, and a minor LCI update was introduced in 2010-2011, the driving dynamics and pure enjoyment this car delivers have been consistent since its debut.

Competing against rivals like the Audi RS5, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, and even the Porsche Cayman, the E9X M3 has carved out its place as the enthusiast’s choice for a balanced, high-revving performance car.

For those seeking a high-performance sports car with a focus on engineering excellence and driving engagement, the BMW E92/E90 M3 remains a standout choice, embodying BMW’s ///M racing heritage in a package that excels on both the road and the track.

Car Hacking Shortcuts

  • 2009 or newer models have addressed early production issues like rod bearing failures and DCT lag. Models from 2011 and up include updated features like BMW Apps and more refined start/stop technology.

  • Cars equipped with the Competition Package (ZCP), carbon-fiber roof, and premium sound systems tend to maintain or increase resale value, as these are highly desirable among enthusiasts.

  • Limited-production models like the Lime Rock Park Edition or cars with BMW Individual paint options, such as Azurite Black or Ruby Black, can attract collectors and command higher resale prices.

  • Go manual transmission if you value long-term appreciation. Manual transmission cars are increasingly rare and command a premium over DCT-equipped models. They are favored by purists and are less prone to expensive transmission repairs compared to the DCT.

  • Ensure the car has a comprehensive maintenance record. Check for documented rod bearing replacements, throttle actuator repairs, and regular oil changes with Castrol 10W-60.

  • Leverage pre-purchase inspections (PPI). A PPI from a BMW specialist can uncover hidden issues, such as suspension wear, VANOS solenoid problems, or engine leaks. This inspection can save you from unexpected repair costs after purchase.

During your stay, you will have an opportunity to go on a private tour of the Semenggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to interact with endangered orangutans in their natural habitat.

A private tour of the famous Bako National Park by boat and by foot will be the highlight of your second day in Kuching. This may be the smallest national park in Sarawak, but it is one of the most intriguing.

Not only is it home to proboscis monkeys and silver langurs, it has every type of vegetation that can be found in Borneo.

For an in-depth experience, you can ask your tour operator to arrange for a night stay on Bako Island to explore some of the less-trodden trails to hidden beaches, waterfalls and jungle streams.

Sepilok

Conveniently perched on the edge of the rainforest, the My Nature Resort in Sepilok is a mega hit with luxury-minded travelers and nature lovers alike.

Here your dedicated guide will take you to the Rainforest Discovery Centre for a canopy walk to give you a bird’s eye view of the surrounding rainforest.

You can also opt to go on a night walking tour in an effort to spot some of the elusive nocturnal wildlife which have made this place their home.

Before you depart from My Nature Resort, you will be able to pay a visit to the largest orangutan rehabilitation centre in the world at Sepilok along with the Sun Bear Conservation Centre.

Kinabatangan

The Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge is the universal choice for those travelers seeking a bespoke luxury experience on the best property on the Kinabatangan River and there are many reasons to show why.

Enjoying a remote laid-back setting, unlike anywhere else in Borneo, the region is home to mangrove forests and freshwater swamps.

These water bodies are the prime habitat of freshwater crocodiles and a wide variety of bird life which includes kingfishers and rhinoceros hornbills.

Moreover, the resort has some of the best guides in Borneo who can cater to your every interest such as birdwatcher or wildlife photography and how many pygmy elephants patrol the banks of the river.

The best part of staying here is the luxury of having a certain stretch of the river to yourself. Since accessing the property is only by boat and it’s the only resort in the vicinity, the splendid isolation enhances the overall stay experience.

Mulu

Mulu is located in the dense green forests of Borneo, right next to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Gunung Mulu National Park and the site of the spectacular Mulu Caves.

Mulu Caves are renowned for their tall limestone karst formations of which the Sarawak Chamber is the largest cave in the world, while the Clearwater Cave is the longest in Asia.

A private guide and a park ranger will accompany you on the cave tour and point out the stalagmites and stalactites, most of which are lit up at dusk.

There is a splendid five-star property here by the name of Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa, which features well-appointed rooms, all situated on raised wooden walkways overlooking the Melinau River.

The real luxury of staying in this off-the-beaten-path property is that after a hard day of wildlife viewing and trekking, you can unwind at the spa or take a dip in the pool.

Furthermore, wellness classes are conducted every day for those interested in participating. Simply relax on your private porch in the evening to enjoy elevated jungle views and the sounds of cicadas.

All-new Audi RS7 might swap its V8 for a V6 plug-in hybrid

0

The Audi RS7, the brand’s next-generation flagship wagon, might switch to a plug-in hybrid setup. According to a new report, Audi is likely to swap the twin-turbo V8 with an electrified V6.

As you may be aware, the Audi RS6 Avant is being rebadged as the RS7. It will still be available in sedan and estate body styles. Reports suggest that it will feature a V6 plug-in hybrid producing around 725 hp under the hood, with an additional 50 hp available via the ‘Boost’ function.

The RS7 might also get a Performance variant with even more horsepower. It is estimated to have around 800 hp – almost 100 hp more than its main rival, the BMW M5. The Bavarian super sedan also has a plug-in hybrid under the hood. However, it has an electrified V8 that makes 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque.

The pure electric version will be called the RS6. It will also be offered as a sedan and station wagon and will feature dual electric motors producing around 630 hp.

Audi Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept teases a wild rugged EV

0

  • Audi has provided a first look at its rugged Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept
  • The concept features portal axles for increased ground clearance, along with other modifications aimed at off-roading
  • Audi hasn’t announced whether production is planned

Audi took to social media on Thursday to post the first photos of a wild off-roader concept based on the Q6 E-Tron electric crossover.

The automaker didn’t provide any additional details apart from confirming that the concept, dubbed the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road, is fitted with portal axles, which give it a tall and wide stance. Unlike conventional axles, the wheels don’t sit at the height of the axle center but are instead situated much lower on the axle hubs, separated by portal gears.

Mercedes-Benz famously used portal axles on some G-Class models in recent years. On the G-Class, the portal axles helped create 13.8 inches of ground clearance, a 41.3-degree approach angle, a 36.8-degree departure angle, and a 42.0-degree breakover angle. It isn’t clear what the specifications are for the Audi concept, but the huge fender flares certainly hint at a high level of wheel articulation.

Audi was spotted testing a camouflaged version of the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept last fall, and it remains unclear whether the concept hints at a production-bound model or serves as a test mule for another vehicle, such as a rumored rugged SUV designed to target the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Mercedes, several years ago, built a rugged EQC with similar modifications to those seen here while developing the four-wheel-drive system for the electric G-Class.

More details should be released shortly, perhaps in time for the 2025 F.A.T. Ice Race running Feb. 1. The annual event, held at Austria’s Zell Am See airport, traditionally sees one or more Volkswagen Group brands participate.

The Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept is based on the sleeker Q6 Sportback E-Tron body style. Currently, only the regular Q6 E-Tron is available to order in the U.S. It’s available for the 2025 model year and is priced from $65,095, including a $1,295 destination charge.

The Q6 E-Tron comes standard with a 100-kwh battery and a single rear motor rated at 302 hp (322 hp with launch control). Adding all-wheel drive costs $2,000 and increases power to 422 hp (456 hp with launch control) thanks to the addition of a motor at the front.

Buyers seeking more performance can opt for an SQ6 E-Tron, which comes standard with all-wheel drive and is priced from $74,195, including destination. The SQ6 E-Tron is rated at 483 hp (509 hp with launch control) and can deliver 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.1 seconds, with a top speed of 143 mph.

Gordon Ramsay spotted in his $2.5 million Aston Martin Valiant

0

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has been spotted driving around London in his new ride – an Aston Martin Valiant. Apparently, it is the first Valiant delivered in Europe.

Ramsay was seen getting into his $2.5 million machine and driving around the posh locality of Mayfair. This appears to be the same Valiant that Fernando Alonso drove at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The car has a white exterior with distinct blue and red stripes along the sides. It is fitted with the 21-inch magnesium wheels sans the carbon aero discs.

The Aston Martin Valiant is a more track-focused version of the Valour. Only 38 examples are being produced.

The Valiant gets a more pronounced splitter at the front, while a fixed spoiler replaces the rear ducktail. It also gets a carbon fibre grille, flared side fenders, quad exhausts, broad side sills, and upswept vortex generators just ahead of the rear wheels.

At the heart of the Valiant is a twin-turbo 5.2-liter V12 engine, which has been tuned to 735 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque. The engine is hooked up to a 6-speed manual transmission.

0

Shelby is bringing back the legendary GT350. The folks from Hagerty talked to Shelby North America president Gary Patterson and VP Vince LaViolette before the official unveiling of the new GT350, who shared some insights about the car’s legacy and some information about the latest iteration.

Under the hood, the new GT350 features a Whipple supercharged 5.0L V8 producing an impressive 810 horsepower—nearly 300 more than its predecessor. The car also boasts a fully revamped suspension, upgraded brakes, and a unique aluminum hood designed for optimal cooling and aerodynamics. Customers can choose between a manual or automatic transmission

Key updates to the design include a more aggressive grille and front splitter, an exclusive aluminum hood, and a suspension overhaul to improve handling. The car sits about 1.5 inches lower than stock Mustangs, with Shelby-designed flow-formed aluminum wheels, Brembo brakes, and Michelin PS4S tires ensuring top-tier performance. Inside, leather-trimmed seats, Shelby badging, and personalized serial numbers add to the bespoke feel.

Shelby also plans to introduce the GT350R—a race-focused version inspired by the original R-models from 1965. Limited to just 36 units, these cars will feature lightweight construction, carbon fiber tubs, Alcon brakes, and track-spec components. Production is limited to just 36 units for the race model, while fewer than 500 GT350s will be produced overall, making them a rare and highly collectible piece of automotive history.

Mitsubishi reportedly considering skipping merger with Honda, Nissan

0

Mitsubishi has been invited to join a planned merger between Honda and Nissan, though the automaker is reportedly considering turning down the offer, Reuters reported on Friday, citing anonymous sources.

According to the sources, Mitsubishi was expected to decide by this month whether to join Honda and Nissan in the merger. However, the only comment the automaker has made is that it is considering various possibilities and that its final decision has not yet been made.

Mitsubishi already has ties with Honda and Nissan, and according to Reuters’ sources, the automaker may choose to remain independent while continuing its collaboration with Honda and Nissan.

Nissan already owns a major stake in Mitsubishi, and the two companies share vehicle platforms and technology through their existing alliance, which also includes Renault. However, Mitsubishi announced last fall that it plans to buy back some of its shares from Nissan to reduce Nissan’s stake from 34% to 27%.

Mitsubishi has also collaborated with Honda in the past, most recently in the area of battery leasing for EVs through a joint venture called Altna.

Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper also reported on Friday that Mitsubishi is considering not joining the merger due to concerns that its smaller size compared to Honda and Nissan could leave it disadvantaged in decision-making.

Nissan and Honda’s merger is expected to be finalized by mid-2025, with the establishment of a holding company to follow a year later, at which point both companies’ shares would be delisted.

Tokyo Auto Salon 2025: The Big Round-Up Gallery

0

It’s been almost two weeks since we dropped our first Tokyo Auto Salon 2025 story, and as you might be aware, a few changes are underway here at Speedhunters…

We teased a site ‘refresh’ a couple of days ago, and while we know the forthcoming redesign might not be for everyone, it’s all part of a bigger plan. This update serves a crucial purpose as we migrate to a proper CMS and implement additional features throughout the year.

DSC08335

One of the first big changes is the return of the Speedhunters store, which has been offline for an achingly long time. This relaunch isn’t without its (initial) limitations though.

DSC08320

We know there are plenty of you outside the US eager for official Speedhunters merch, and we’re working hard on expanding our shipping coverage in the near future. The same goes for product availability; this time-limited initial drop is just the beginning, with plenty more to come very soon.

DSC09368

But let’s get back to what matters right now – Tokyo Auto Salon. 2025 was another chaotic year for both the show itself and the greater Tokyo area, which hosted numerous meets, gatherings, and events surrounding TAS.

DSC08504
DSC08341

By now, you’ve probably checked out Alec’s coverage of the Underground Tokyo meet. And while it was a bit more low-key this year, RWB still gathered its owners on the Thursday before Tokyo Auto Salon kicked off. Then, in the days that followed, Nissan opened the doors of their Zama Heritage Collection for a special viewing.

DSC08214
MRTAS25-156

As for TAS itself, you’ve already seen most of the heavy hitters from 2025, including the Liberty Walk Miura and the Kaido Racer-style R32 Skyline. Toby gave us the full kei car madness treatment, and we even got a glimpse of a wild Toyota Sera project – packing both a turbo SR20VET and a turbo K20A, no less. Alec also scoured the Makuhari Messe car park, because, let’s face it, anyone heading to Tokyo Auto Salon is as obsessed with cars as we are.

DSC08468

One thing we didn’t cover in our first event report was a car that lit up the comments section: Rocket Bunny’s Lotus Elise. Unlike other Kei Miura creations, this build goes far beyond a wide-body kit – though, ironically, that’s the one thing we haven’t seen yet. Instead, this Elise features a custom subframe kit on both axles, with the rear housing an EJ25 Subaru motor and a transaxle for good measure. Why? Well, aside from being completely bonkers, this Rocket Bunny build will be competing in time attack events this year. Don’t worry, we’ll have a full spotlight once it’s ready for action.

MRTAS25-95

Before we dive into a final TAS 2025 giganto gallery, there was one more car from the comments we had to address: an all-carbon C10 Nissan Skyline stationed at the Star Aero Parts stand.

MRTAS25-4

This isn’t the first carbon-clad Hakosuka we’ve featured. Cast your mind back a few years and you might remember Dino’s story on the Rocky Auto version. But Star Aero’s build, dubbed the ‘Hakos Carbon,’ is a whole different beast. It features dry carbon panels that can be ordered directly from Star Aero, making it almost a complete Hakosuka build without relying on a single original panel.

MRTAS25-23

Given how expensive these cars have become – and how insane prices for stock panels are now – opting for dry carbon alternatives could save you a fair amount, with the bonus of being far lighter.

DSC09073

And if that wasn’t enough to fuel your carbon fibre cravings, get a load of the S15 Silvia next to it. That’s sporting a full Super GT-inspired aero kit, which, just like the Hakosuka kit, is also available for order directly from Star Aero Parts.

DSC08254

As we move toward the end of the month, we’ll wrap up our Japan Month 2025 theme with a few more spotlights, including a rare HKS Zero-R that’s surfaced out of hiding, and a road-legal Lamborghini Diablo GT2, meticulously prepared by K-Engineering. But until then, we hope you’ve enjoyed our Tokyo Auto Salon 2025 coverage.
