Located just an hour’s ferry ride off the Southern California coast, Catalina has earned a reputation as the “Caribbean of California” thanks to its bluer-than-blue water, charming beachside resorts, laid-back coastal vibe, and fantastic dining. The island spans a sizable 76 square miles, but the real star here is Avalon Bay, the island’s main harbor shaped like a perfect crescent.

BMW is reinventing itself. The clumsy term “Neue Klasse” has finally taken shape, and the all-new iX3 is its first physical expression. Five more models will follow by 2027, with the underlying technology expected to flow into 40 future BMW vehicles. Ahead of the 2025 IAA, the Munich brand is calling this transition the biggest in its history. But first and foremost, the BMW iX3 is a brand-new car – and a very good one at that.
The true significance of a new model usually only becomes clear after several years. In this case, however, the impact is already obvious. The new iX3 isn’t just another SUV – it’s the car designed to redefine BMW itself. Production, development, design, user interface: nearly everything has been rethought. This shift towards an all-electric future will be led by six Neue Klasse models, starting with the iX3. “Neue Klasse is our most important future project,” explains BMW CEO Oliver Zipse. “It represents a giant leap in technology, driving experience and design. Practically everything about it is new – and yet it’s more BMW than ever. Our entire portfolio will benefit from the innovations of the Neue Klasse, regardless of powertrain.”
The previous iX3 was little more than a stopgap solution. Initially intended only for the Chinese market, it was quickly brought to Europe once it was clear the demand for EVs in the SUV segment was growing rapidly. However, it was based on a platform designed for combustion engines, came only with rear-wheel drive, and was limited to 180km/h – not exactly what BMW buyers were looking for. Unsurprisingly, it failed to resonate with the brand’s traditional customer base, who remained loyal to efficient diesel models.
The new iX3 changes everything. Measuring 4.78 metres in length, it has been developed from the ground up as a pure EV. It features fresh design language, streamlined development processes and a completely new architecture that will underpin at least five additional models. Launching as the iX3 xDrive50, it delivers 345kW (469bhp) and 675Nm of torque. More variants – both more and less powerful – will follow.
With a claimed consumption of just over 15kWh/100km and a battery capacity of 108.7kWh (featuring 20% higher energy density), the WLTP range can reach up to 800km. Thanks to its 800-volt electrical system, the iX3 can recharge 370km of range in just ten minutes at up to 400kW, rivalling combustion-engine refuelling times. Top speed is limited to 210km/h. Standard AC charging is 11kW, with a 22kW option available. Bidirectional charging allows for V2L (vehicle-to-load), V2H (vehicle-to-home) and even V2G (vehicle-to-grid) functionality.
Chassis, brakes, steering and driver assistance systems are all connected via four high-performance computers. However, level 3 autonomous capability won’t be available at launch. Instead, the iX3 will carry over the same systems currently seen in the BMW i5. Still, it excels in other areas: sustainability, for example. Built at BMW’s new Debrecen plant, the iX3 boasts a 34% reduction in lifecycle CO₂ emissions compared to its predecessor.
Inside, there’s ample space for five, but traditionalists may be shocked by the cockpit. The familiar BMW instrument cluster is gone, replaced by a slim display strip along the base of the windscreen, a central touchscreen and a head-up display. The longstanding three-spoke steering wheel has also been retired. In its place is a new, illuminated four-spoke design intended to guide drivers through BMW’s latest iDrive interface.
Boot space stands at 520 litres, expandable to 1,750 litres with the rear seats folded. A 58-litre front compartment is available for charging cables and small items. The base price for the BMW iX3 xDrive50 is expected to start at €68,900.
The first time I set foot on the Italian island of Pantelleria (located in the Strait of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea) was 30 years ago, when I made a trip there to visit a friend. Believe it or not, I didn’t like it. I expected it to be more exotic, not so “hard”.There were no nice hotels, no restaurants, no life. We needed a generator to cook. The greatest excitement of the day was when a car went by on the road. But after a few days, I acclimatised to the inactivity. One day, I looked up to that clear sky and everything was just so quiet and calm – a pure silence.
In 1981, I returned to visit another friend and decided to purchase a house there. A few years later I bought another piece of land that was closer to the water and, ever since, this island home has been my summer refuge every August. Of course, these days, Pantelleria is quite different: it has electricity, there are a few hotels, and cars passing by on the road are no longer the big attraction. But it still retains that untouched wildness and beauty, which remind me of that moment when I first bought the house.
The original structures were two abandoned dammusi on this isolated spot where people often picked Indian figs from the giant cacti. (The dammuso is a traditional architectural structure made of natural materials such as rock, red tufo and plaster, and was introduced to Pantelleria in the 10th century.) The two-feet-thick stone walls are constructed from volcanic rock and the white domed roofs are natural forms of insulation and protection from the extremely high temperatures, so the rooms in the house are cool and the air is fresh constantly – it’s even better than air-conditioning!
Strangely enough, the sea was not a priority for me. It was the whole island, the light, and the coarse, wild terrain. It was humbling being surrounded by huge, black volcanic rock – it gave the locale strength. And I needed a natural force that strong to help me relax.
Over the years, I have worked tirelessly on the Oasis garden that surrounds my house. It includes spectacular Tiaré trees, magnificent rose bushes, jasmine hedges, rare cypress trees, and 300-year-old palm trees imported from Sicily, not to mention the local prickly Echninocactus grusonii (cactus) plants and Cycads. Every year, the property is given a maintenance makeover. In fact, last year, work was done to the swimming pool, and I also completely renovated the interiors using pieces from my Armani Casa line.
I chose to work with architect Gabriella Giuntoli on this house for a number of reasons. She is a native of Pantelleria and understands the natural surroundings perfectly. On top of that, she has an innate ability to comprehend someone’s taste and needs, transforming these ideas into a reality that is simple, natural, and, ultimately, luxurious. What do I love most about this house? The outdoor living room terrace that looks out towards the sea; the swimming pool that appears like a natural pool among the wild landscape; the sense of calm and relaxation, and the fact that it is so close to Milan yet feels like I am miles away from civilization.
This holiday home in Pantelleria mirrors my vision and personal style aesthetic perfectly. As with clothing, one’s home reflects one’s personality. That is why it is so important to select items that help to bring out your personality in a natural way. You have to feel comfortable, relaxed and pampered in your own home. I love anything that has its foundation in nature, whether we are talking about material, colour, or form. I have several homes now all over the world. Each one is very different, but the common denominator among them is that they all reflect my personality and the surrounding natural landscapes.
People often ask me to compare my home in Milan with my home in Pantelleria. They are two completely different realities and perform different functions. My home in Milan is where I spend my working life, and stick to the Monday-through-Friday work schedule. It is modern, functional, and linear. I can relax and have people over, and yet be in the office in two seconds. Plus, I’m right in the center of Milan!
Pantelleria is my summer refuge. I live outdoors when I’m there. It’s the only place where I truly feel I can “switch off” and escape from the stress and wear and tear of working life. I used to visit only in the summer, but recently, I’ve headed there for long weekends in the autumn and spring. It’s so close to Tunisia that the weather is always warm and inviting. My sister says it’s the only place that makes my face change. It’s because I’m genuinely relaxed; the stress disappears.
A Day on Pantelleria
A day in my life on Pantelleria is the epitome of island life, lived to the fullest outdoors. My day starts off with a power hike around the island at 7:30am (I have always been an early riser) and, contrary to what people tease me about, I do not “make” my guests come with me – unless they want to, of course. I have breakfast with my family and friends after the hike because I am so energized, but they are always half asleep! After breakfast we usually take the boat out to sea and go for a swim. Then, we return to shore for lunch at around 3pm. Meals are always had outside. After lunch, I take a short nap until the late afternoon. Then, we might go out to the local market or watch a film. Dinner is always outside and always by candlelight.

Porsche discontinued the ICE-powered Macan SUV post the launch of its EV version. However, the German carmaker is now said to be working on a successor to the petrol-powered Macan SUV – albeit in an affordable and easier way.
According to reports, the new ICE model, codenamed “M1”, will be underpinned by the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture. This is the same platform which will also be used by the new Audi Q5.
Reports state that, unlike previous iterations, Porsche will not reengineer the platform. Instead, it will utilise the front-wheel-biased Quattro Ultra system, as seen on the Q5. This system operates as a front-wheel drive in normal conditions, but can send up to 70% of torque to the rear wheels when deemed necessary.
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed the “M1” project, while also stating that the carmaker is planning to develop the SUV in a relatively short span of three years.
The Macan successor will be the first model in Porsche’s 40 years of selling all-wheel-drive cars to feature a front-wheel-biased system.

Benetti is hosting the world premiere of the Class 44M at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival (September 9-14), with the shipyard’s fibreglass flagship represented by hull one, Juno’s 7.
The Class 44M was designed inside and out by Cassetta Yacht Design, which collaborated with Benetti’s architectural team on the exterior lines, interiors and décor. The 144ft 7in superyacht is the successor to the Diamond 44M and is based on the same hull as the former model, which first launched in 2020 and was also designed by Giorgio Cassetta’s studio.
At the Super Yachts Extension in Vieux Port, Benetti will also show units from three of its most popular fibreglass models: the Oasis 40M (Cada Dia) and Oasis 34M (A+), as well as the Motopanfilo 37M (Angel), while also revealing an upcoming model.
Cada Dia is the 20th unit in Benetti’s successful Oasis line, with both the 40M and 34M featuring exteriors by UK-based RWD and interiors by New York studio Bonetti & Kozerski. Among customisations on Cada Dia, the master suite is situated aft on the upper deck, “transforming it into a true private apartment with panoramic views”, while two spacious VIP cabins are located forward on the main deck.
The Oasis 34M is Benetti’s only sub-300GT model to feature the exclusive Oasis Deck®. On A+, standout features are the fold-down wings at the stern, which create a 76sqm flush platform integrated with the main saloon, “transforming the entire area into a true terrace overlooking the sea, usable at any time of day”.
Inspired by Benetti’s heritage, the Motopanfilo 37M features an exterior by Francesco Struglia in collaboration with Benetti, notable for the bronze ‘ribbon’ that connects the hull to the superstructure. With the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique 38mm, the brand has finally given us the more restrained dive watch the community has been hankering for since the model returned to the fold in 2003. Since that time, Blancpain has heard from us all that we wanted a more compact version of the Fifty Fathoms, one of two claimants to the title of “world’s first dive watch.” Sticking to its guns, Blancpain maintained that the Fifty Fathoms model was made for professionals in 1953 and thus could not be smaller than its 45mm size. Of course, that original model was 41mm, so…
Barring some limited editions over the years, Blancpain has never given any indication that it would ever yield to persistent requests for a smaller diver. Even for women, who are an important part of the diving world. Well, we can all stop our bellyaching, as they say, because there is now a slew of Fifty Fathoms Automatique models to satisfy those consistent requests, and they are 38.2mm, to be precise. Now, we have to say that this was a bit of a wink-and-a-nod sort of drop from the brand, with the first two 38.2mm releases last week looking like standalone news. We wrote this entire story (for the most part) without knowing that more watches were on the way… One clue that more models were indeed coming was that the Internet reacted slowly, uncharacteristically, and the press site was wobbly.
On those two ladies’ models revealed first, could either of these ostensibly made-for-her watches appeal to men? That is down to taste, of course, but – for the Singapore audience – we think one of these models would be good for SG60…
Anyway, if we are being honest, we think most professional commentators (ourselves included) never thought the day would come when there would be a Fifty Fathoms model smaller than 40mm… and the smallest watch in the range is 42mm, with anything smaller (hello Hodinkee!) being restricted to very special runs. Indeed, the existence of the Bathyscaphe line, which does offer more restrained proportions, seemed to render questions about smaller Fifty Fathoms options moot. Such suggestions seem downright churlish, it could be argued. After all, the Bathyscaphe is quite an excellent dive watch in its own right; however, it is not the Fifty Fathoms.
The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is a right proper icon and, if it is your flavour of dive watch, nothing can substitute it. This is what all dive watches descend from- it is an Ur form that precedes ISO standards. In many ways, the original Fifty Fathoms set the standard, or predicted them, if you prefer. This means that its form and character are sacrosanct, and yet… Blancpain itself has altered the watch from the 1953 original.
No one imagines that even the 2003 contemporary Fifty Fathoms was a replica, nor the 2007 version that heralded the return of the watch to the regular collection. Blancpain does not do replicas, and neither does any watchmaking brand that invests in its own identity.
Before we go further, though, an actual introduction is called for, and we shall organise by order of release. What we have first, then, are the two ladies’ automatic 38.2mm dive watches, one in red gold and one in brushed grade 23 titanium – Ref. 5007 3644A and Ref. 5007 12B44R, respectively. Both are 12mm thick, so nothing extraordinary there and are powered by the same automatic Calibre 1153, which boasts 100 hours of power reserve but is not chronometer certified. Water-resistance is 300 metres and Blancpain has of course not shorted us on an exhibition caseback.
The titanium model has a pink dégradé mother-of-pearl dial, while the red gold watch sports a black dégradé mother-of-pearl dial. Blancpain calls these colours petal pink and smoky black. The titanium model in particular leans into pink very heavily, as you can see.
Joining these two early birds are three officially “genderless,” models, all sharing the same size and the same Calibre 1153. These are Ref. 5007 1130 71S (polished steel with black dial and bezel); Ref. 5007 12B40 98S (satin brushed grade 23 titanium with blue dial and bezel); and Ref. 5007 36B40 O52B (red gold with blue dial and bezel, this one with sail cloth strap).
Intriguingly, all 38.2mm models are sans date, which is a first for the Fifty Fathoms collection. While that move may be lauded by the most peevish of the date window debaters, the same may not hold true for the horn spacing for all 38.2mm models, which is 19mm. This is different to the 42mm models (21.5mm) and the 45mm models (23mm); this has implications for those who like to swap out straps frequently and should be noted.
All models share the typical Fifty Fathoms numerals, hour markers, hands and bezels, so they look very similar when viewed in a catalogue or on the website. Just as with the lug gap, there might be subtle differences that will only present themselves when the watches are examined physically. A real battle might emerge between the two red gold models, which are differentiated by dial and bezel only.
Not having worn these watches in any form, prototypes or otherwise, it is difficult to assess them relative to anything else. It might be that the balance will be slightly off or just right, but we will hazard a guess that the fit over a wetsuit might be less than optimal. It should be obvious from the look of the watches that these latest propositions are recreational tools, not professional ones.
And that leaves us with the idea that this is meant to be a second watch, or the primary watch of a person who does not use it for diving. On that note, the logo engraved on the case flank remains in place in the 38.2mm model, and this, too, is a feature that is much discussed. It is probably good that the collection holds onto more elements of its shared identity – it did not occur to us to even ask after the flank logo initially.
We close this first look (at pictures and specifications) with a message from Marc A. Hayek, President and CEO of Blancpain (which was included in the press information and is quite delicious): “The Fifty Fathoms is much more than a diver’s watch, it’s a symbol of exploration and innovation. With the addition of new models, we’re responding to a clear demand while reaffirming that this collection was always meant for all wrists. It’s a natural and important evolution for a watch born underwater, made to be worn anywhere.”
