This country in Sub-Saharan Africa has faced many challenges. But it also has beauty, resilience, and warm people.

Day 1: Exploring Bangui

I started my journey in Bangui, the capital city. My first stop was the National Assembly. I learned about CAR’s government and its efforts to build stability.

The democratic republic has been through a lot. It faced civil wars and conflicts with rebel groups. Despite this, the people continue to strive for democracy. They are also working to protect human rights. My visit to the National Assembly gave me a glimpse into those efforts.

Next, I visited a local market. I found handmade crafts, colorful fabrics, and fresh produce. The atmosphere was lively. I felt the warmth of the people, who were eager to share their stories.

Some locals told me about the ongoing humanitarian needs in the country. Many people rely on help from humanitarian organizations. This is especially true in rural areas where resources are limited.

I also stopped by the Boganda National Museum. It offers a deeper understanding of the country’s history and tribal culture. Nearby, I saw the Presidential Palace and admired its architecture.

Later in the day, I met with UN peacekeepers who were part of the mission in CAR. Their job is to help maintain peace and protect civilians. The United Nations and its agencies play a big role here.

Their work is especially important due to the ongoing rebel issues. There’s also the influence of Wagner mercenaries. It was humbling to see how dedicated the peacekeepers were. They work hard to keep people safe.

Day 2: Visiting the Countryside

On my second day, I explored the rural areas outside Bangui. I took a drive through the countryside. The beauty of CAR’s landscapes took my breath away.

In the Lobaye region and the southwest near the Congo border, I found lush rainforest and vibrant biodiversity. We passed by plantations, small villages, and muddy trails.

I visited Dzanga-Sangha National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve known for its incredible wildlife. I saw forest elephants, buffalo, bongos, red river hogs, and even African wild dogs. Though I didn’t spot a cheetah or leopard, I learned they live deep within the reserve. Some tourists had reported rare encounters with gorillas and chimpanzees.

One of the most memorable moments was learning about the Ba and Baka pygmies. These indigenous tribes live in harmony with the rainforest and share deep knowledge of the flora and fauna.

I joined a local guide for a walk near the Sangha River. We wore waterproof phone bags and carried a basic medicine kit just in case. The rainy season had made the trails slippery, but the experience was unforgettable.

Next, I traveled to Bamingui-Bangoran National Park. The area is vast and teeming with wildlife. I heard distant calls of western lowland gorillas and learned about ongoing conservation work.

Later, we drove to the Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park near the borders of Chad and Cameroon. Though access is limited, this park is known for being home to lions, leopards, gorillas, and diverse species.

To wrap up the day, I visited the Boali Falls and dam. Also known as the Boali Waterfalls, this site is a popular attraction and a favorite spot for tourists. The falls are breathtaking and surrounded by forest. It’s a peaceful place to reflect.

Is It Safe to Travel to Africa?

Many people ask, “Is it safe to travel to Africa?” The answer depends on the country. Some are very stable and safe for tourists. Others, like the Central African Republic, still have security challenges.

Traveling to CAR requires careful planning. You need a valid passport, visa, and travel health insurance. Be aware of local conflicts and rebel groups. But with local guidance and help from organizations like the UN, it is possible to visit safely.

Air France has flights to Bangui. But it’s best to coordinate travel with trusted local contacts. Despite the risks, my 48 hours in CAR were unforgettable.

The people were warm and kind. The landscapes are beautiful. The wildlife, from buffalo to gorillas, made the experience magical.

Support from the UN, the African Union, and other partners is vital. They help CAR take steps forward. If you ever get the chance to visit, I recommend it.

While preparing for my recent trip to the Galapagos Islands, I kept coming across hiking pants on suggested packing lists. At first, I was skeptical and wondered why I would need long pants on a warm weather trip. While I knew I’d be hiking most days, I thought I’d be better suited to face the Ecuadorian sun in running shorts or tennis skirts. 

A few days before my vacation, I ended up making a last-minute trip to browse the TJ Maxx activewear section. There, I stumbled upon the Free People Movement Fly By Night Pants. They instantly caught my eye for being more fashion-forward than your typical hiking pants, which encouraged me to take the leap and buy them, knowing I could wear them for more than just hiking on my trip.

Free People Movement Fly By Night Hiking Pants 

On our first full day of activities, it became clear to me that these Free People pants weren’t only cute but also practical. Since the Galapagos is at the equator (we passed through it multiple times during the trip), the sun is much stronger than I’m used to. These pants kept my legs protected to avoid sun damage and burns. 

Made from 100 percent nylon, they’re lightweight, airy, and breathable. I was able to move around in them with ease while hiking on different terrain. I felt just as comfortable in these pants as in shorts, if not even more so, since they shielded my skin from the intense heat. A bonus: While these pants did wrinkle in my suitcase, any creases fell out while I was wearing them, so I already know I’ll be bringing them on future trips.

But what really put these hiking pants to the test was the unpredictable climate of the Galapagos. When we set out for a hike, we never knew if we’d be in the sun all day or facing rainstorms. During the worst downpour of the trip, these water-resistant pants kept my legs completely dry underneath. Plus, when I hung them up in my cabin, they dried off much quicker than any of my other hiking clothes, which makes them more convenient for travel.

Free People Movement Fly By Night Hiking Pants 

These pants are slightly oversized in the leg but have a more fitted elastic waistband that offers a good amount of stretch. I’m generally a size 0 to 2 in bottoms, and the XS is a perfect fit on my petite frame. “I bought my usual size Medium and they fit comfortably with room to wear over leggings [for colder weather],” said one shopper. Some reviewers recommend sizing down, but Free People Movement tends to run slightly big overall, and these pants fit consistently with the brand’s sizing. One thing to keep in mind is that they are a cropped style, meant to hit above the ankle. I’m 5-feet tall and they fit me more like full-length pants, which I appreciate as I generally struggle to find wide-leg pants that fit me properly. 

Shoppers agree that these pants would be cute and comfortable for everyday activities beyond the trails. “I bought these for my trip to Europe, where I’ll be walking a lot,” said one shopper, adding that they are very flattering and cute. The only downside to these pants is that they make a swishing sound when you walk, but personally, I’ve found this to be pretty minimal, and I tend to forget about it while wearing them.   

After a weeklong cruise in the Galapagos, I’ve officially been converted to a hiking pants aficionado. I’m currently planning my next active trip to Alaska, and fully plan on stocking up on more styles beforehand. Continue on for some similar styles I’m currently eyeing, all on sale for under $100.

Plus, these pants are sweat-wicking, quick-drying, abrasion-resistant, and made from UPF 40+ material. 

Lululemon Packable Lightweight Hiking Pant 

These ultra-lightweight pants are not only breathable but also designed to be packable. You can fold them down to fit into the left-hand pocket, so they take up minimal suitcase space. The waistband also has loops that you can attach carabiners to for climbing.

Columbia Leslie Falls Pull-on Pant 

If you’re looking for more of a fitted style, consider these straight-leg pants with a stretchy mid-rise waistband. They’re made from an omni-proof material, which means they can repel and withstand a variety of elements like water and stains, so you’ll have them for many getaways to come. One reviewer who bought these pants for an Iceland trip said, “I wore them over thermal leggings and fleece sweatpants, so these added warmth and were waterproof.”

Day 1: Arrival and Romantic Old Town Exploration

First morning in Bansko

I arrived earlier as I attended the Bansko Nomad Fest, but usually, you would arrive after a scenic 2-hour drive from Sofia in Bansko, greeted by cobblestone streets and traditional wooden houses. Checking into a simple guesthouse in the old town, I felt the town’s warm hospitality and mountain charm, making it an ideal base for exploration.

Bansko’s compact size is perfect for strolling, and its affordability adds to its appeal.

Stroll through the city and visit the Holy Trinity Church

A first stop could be the Holy Trinity Church, a 19th-century Bulgarian Orthodox landmark built in 1835.

This church is worth visiting for its historical significance and architectural beauty, offering a glimpse into the town’s spiritual past.

Afternoon: Rafting on the Struma River

As the sun climbs high, casting a golden glow over the landscape, the call of adventure beckons. We embarked on a rafting journey down the Struma River, a thrilling 11-kilometer escapade through the heart of the Kresna Gorge, near Krupnik. Organized by reputable centers like Rafting on Struma river by Rafting base “Rafting BG” in Poleto (rated 4.9/5), this adventure ensures safety and exhilaration with professional equipment and experienced guides.

The anticipation builds as you gear up with life jackets and helmets. The Struma River’s class-2 (class-3 in spring) rapids offer an easy challenge and excitement for novices rafters. In the summer the level is far more relaxed and it also fits for families, where kids can join the fun.

Morning: Fishing at Rila – A Culinary Gem

A short 30-minute drive from Bansko, Rila Fish offers a delightful culinary experience that evokes comfort and satisfaction. This fish store and restaurant specializes in fresh, locally sourced fish, likely prepared with traditional Bulgarian flair.

Visiting Rila Fish promises a cozy meal, perhaps featuring grilled trout or carp, paired with local wines, set against the backdrop of the Pirin Mountains. The warm ambiance and authentic flavors create a sense of connection to the region’s culinary heritage, making it a perfect stop for travelers seeking a taste of Bansko’s local charm.

Run by FOUR PAWS and Fondation Brigitte Bardot, this sanctuary provides a safe haven for rescued dancing bears, like Seida and Jeta, who now roam ‘freely’ across 12 hectares of forested terrain. A guided visit reveals their stories of resilience, stirring deep compassion as you witness their transformation from captivity to freedom.

The sanctuary’s serene landscape, coupled with the bears’ playful antics, fosters a profound appreciation for conservation efforts, leaving you inspired by the power of second chances.

The tour takes around 45 minutes and leads you into the valley through the aerial and then back uphill to the main station.

Lunch: The Station Bansko by Tsakiris

Just a three-minute walk from the Gondola lift, The Station by Tsakiris in Bansko is a vibrant Greek fast-food restaurant. Established in 2018 by the Tsakiris family, it blends quality with convenience, offering a menu brimming with authentic Greek gyros, souvlaki, succulent burgers, homemade pizzas, and vegetarian options, all crafted with carefully selected Greek ingredients. The inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and grilled specialties fills the air, creating a lively yet cozy atmosphere perfect for pre or post-adventure gatherings.

I had the chicken gyros, which I can recommend.

Afternoon: Rent an e-bike and go for a mountain tour

First, hop on the gondola and head all the way up the mountain. Then embark on an e-bike adventure and explore the Pirin Mountains’ breathtaking landscapes, sparking a sense of freedom and exhilaration. Renting an electric bike from providers like Ski & Board Traventuria allows you to effortlessly explore the scenic roads of the Razlog Valley and Pirin National Park, with routes tailored for all skill levels.

We stayed on the tarmac for our trip, which took us to the Baikushev’s Pine – A Living Legacy.

Right in the heart of Pirin National Park, the Baikushev’s Pine stands as a majestic testament to nature’s endurance, evoking awe and reverence. This ancient Bosnian pine, estimated to be over 1,300 years old, was discovered by forester Konstantin Baikushev in 1897 and is one of Bulgaria’s oldest trees. Towering at approximately 26 meters with a girth exceeding 7 meters, its gnarled branches and weathered bark tell stories of centuries past, stirring a profound sense of timelessness.

Visiting this living monument, surrounded by the serene beauty of the Pirin Mountains, inspires a deep appreciation for nature’s resilience and the quiet wisdom of ancient life, leaving you humbled by its enduring presence. Trees that are that old are really special.

Then we continued on our bikes up the hill to Vihren Chalet. Here, we took a quick break, drank some water from the fresh stream, before starting our hike to Okoto Lake – The Eye of the Mountain.

Okoto Lake, or “The Eye,” captivates with its serene beauty, evoking a profound sense of tranquility. Part of the Banderishki Lakes, this glacial gem mirrors the surrounding jagged peaks and lush alpine meadows, its crystal-clear waters resembling a watchful eye gazing at the sky.

A hike to Okoto, often paired with visits to nearby lakes like Ribnoto or Muratovo, immerses you in the pristine wilderness of the Pirin Mountains, stirring awe at nature’s artistry. The stillness of the lake and the crisp mountain air create a peaceful retreat, leaving you with a deep connection to the timeless splendor of Bansko’s natural wonders.

After a short break at the lake, we headed back to our bikes and with these started our journey back to Bansko. The gentle hum of the e-bike as you glide past alpine meadows and towering peaks evokes some excitement, amplified by the ease of covering more ground than a traditional bike (especially going uphill). This eco-friendly journey offers a deep connection with nature, leaving you inspired by Bansko’s stunning summer vistas.

The way back is 14 kilometers downhill. Take it easy, as some curves are tricky and very narrow.

Evening: Dinner at the Chef’s House

In walking distance to the gondola station in the city center you’ll find The Chef’s House. This is a culinary gem that radiates warmth and delight, earning a 4.8/5 rating. 

The chefs serve a fusion of Bulgarian and international cuisines. This family-run restaurant offers a warm, welcoming ambiance where the aroma of freshly prepared dishes fills the air. From traditional Bulgarian banitsa to inventive fusion creations, each plate is crafted with local ingredients, showcasing the region’s flavors with a modern twist.

The cozy setting creates a sense of comfort and connection, making every meal an enjoyable experience that celebrates Bansko’s culinary heritage and global influences. I chose the BBQ Pulled Pork Burger, and that was a very good choice, though all the other meals looked really good as well.

Day 4: Scenery, Wellness and Farewell

Morning: Rhodope Narrow-Gauge Railway

Explore the region and enjoy the views from the Rhodope Narrow-Gauge Railway. Stretching from Septemvri to Dobrinishte this ride offers a nostalgic journey through Bulgaria’s stunning landscapes. This 760mm-gauge line, one of the last operational narrow-gauge railways in Bulgaria, winds through the Rhodope and Pirin Mountains, passing quaint villages, lush valleys, and beautiful gorges.

Aboard the charming train, the rhythmic chug and scenic vistas, including stops like Velingrad and Bansko, create a sense of timeless adventure. With a history spanning over a century, the railway fosters a deep appreciation for Bulgaria’s heritage and natural beauty, leaving travelers enchanted by its unhurried pace and breathtaking views.

Lunch: Five M Restaurant

In Bansko’s main street, you’ll find Five M Restaurant & Good Bar, which offers a vibrant dining experience. This European-style restaurant and cocktail bar serves a diverse menu featuring Bulgarian specialties and international dishes, paired with an impressive selection of cocktails.

The cozy yet elegant ambiance, with its warm lighting and welcoming vibe, creates a perfect setting for savoring hearty meals like grilled meats or fresh salads. Afternoon: Massage at Pulse Therme

Located in the village of Banya, just 5 km from Bansko, Pulse Therme is Bulgaria’s largest mineral spa, offering an unparalleled escape that evokes tranquility and rejuvenation.
