Exclusive! Lexus LFR could get two variants and a €200,000 price tag

0

The upcoming Lexus LFR is being touted as the spiritual successor to the legendary Lexus LFA. It’s Japan’s answer to the Mercedes-AMG GT and the Aston Martin Vantage. Until now, all we’ve seen are some spy images showing a front-engined coupe. Now, some new details have surfaced online.

Sources tell us that the Lexus LFR could be offered in two variants. These have been described as “hardcore” and “docile”. The former is expected to be a more track-focused version, while the latter is the more pliant of the two.

Powering the LFR will be a brand-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with a hybrid system. The internal combustion engine is said to produce around 720 hp, while the hybrid will provide another 180 hp.

We’ve been told that the Lexus LFR is expected to go into production in Q3/Q4 of 2025. Production won’t be limited to a specific number. Instead, Toyota is likely to restrict the annual production of the car.

The LFR could make its public debut this summer. Prices are expected to start at €200,000 before options.

Casa Montelongo Is an Adults-only Hotel in Spain’s Canary Islands

0

  • The hotel is located in the quaint town of La Oliva, in the northern part of Fuerteventura in Spain’s Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa.
  • It has two one-bedroom suites, each with a full-service kitchen, dining room, and a spacious living room.
  • Guests share a 36-foot-long pool, a patio, and a garden.
  • The hotel team can help arrange island experiences such as off-site dinners, stargazing, and water sports.

Fuerteventura, the laid-back Spanish island in the Canary Islands known for its varied landscapes and wild black- and golden-sand beaches, has a design-focused adults-only hotel, Casa Montelongo, which opened last year.

Located in the quaint northern town of La Oliva, the intimate property has just two residential-style suites, a 36-foot-long pool, a garden, and a patio. Spanish–born, Berlin-based architect Néstor Pérez Batista was tasked with converting the former 19th-century home of a local family into a modern retreat that runs entirely on solar energy.

Casa Montelongo’s minimal design is paired with an almost all-white palette punctuated by colorful art and furniture throughout the property. Pérez Batista paid tribute to the island’s heritage by incorporating local materials such as stone, wood, clay, lime, and glass.

The two accommodations—one built in the footprint of a theatre and the other of the old home—can be booked separately or together. They feature open-plan kitchens with dining rooms, spacious living rooms, and separate bedrooms.
Both apartment-like units can accommodate two people and boast luxe amenities like rain showers, Aesop toiletries, dressing rooms, and Cometa cotton bedding. Casa Montelongo also offers complimentary daily breakfast prepared with seasonal ingredients sourced from local vendors.

Another standout feature of the hotel is its curated contemporary art collection, including a sculpture by Tenerife multidisciplinary artist Óscar Latuag on the pool’s far wall. The abstract artwork celebrates the island’s natural diversity by referencing local flora such as lichen, prickly pear, and agave leaves. As the sun moves overhead throughout the day, so, too, does the sculpture’s interplay of shadows and shapes

The curated experience extends beyond the walls of Casa Montelongo. The team can assist with anything from laundry service to arranging trip details like transportation, restaurants, and activities, including in-room massages, cultural visits, bike or hiking routes, surfing or surf classes (the nearest beaches are about a 20-minute drive from the hotel), boat days, or exploring the nearby islands of Lobos and Lanzarote.

Nightly rates at the hotel start from $262.

Kia PV5 electric van arrives to challenge the VW ID.Buzz

0

  • Kia has revealed the PV5 as the first of its planned range of purpose-built vehicles
  • The PV5 is an electric midsize van that Kia will offer in passenger and cargo forms
  • Availability and pricing have yet to be announced

Kia is set to provide a first look at its new PV5, an electric midsize van, during a special Kia EV Day presentation in Tarragona, Spain, on February 24.

The event will also feature the unveiling of the EV4 compact sedan and hatch, along with updates on Kia’s electrification strategy. Full details on the PV5 and EV4 are expected to follow on Feb. 27, including potential information on U.S. availability.

The PV5 is the first in Kia’s planned lineup of purpose-built vehicles (PBVs), designed to cater to specific customer needs, such as delivery vans and shuttles. Kia has confirmed that both passenger and commercial versions of the PV5 will be available, with additional derivatives possible through proper upfitting. The automaker even teased a rugged PV5 concept suited for overlanding at the 2024 SEMA Show.

In terms of design, the passenger PV5 features a single lift-up tailgate door, while the cargo version opts for conventional split rear doors and lacks the extra windows found on the passenger model. Kia has also promised unprecedented flexibility and customization for its PBVs, with some models even offered in cab-chassis form.

Kia PBV Concepts

While Kia has yet to release full specifications, a PV5 concept unveiled at 2024 CES utilized a modified version of Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform. Like Kia’s EV3 electric subcompact crossover, it featured a less-expensive single front-mounted motor and 400-volt configuration, rather than the dual-motor, 800-volt setup found in the EV6 and EV9.

The PV5 concept measured approximately 183 inches in length with a wheelbase of nearly 118 inches. The production version is expected to be similar in size. For comparison, the U.S.-spec Volkswagen ID.Buzz, a likely PV5 rival, measures 195.3 inches long with a 127.5-inch wheelbase. For buyers needing even more space, Kia also showcased the PV7 concept at CES, a larger electric van stretching over 207 inches in length.

In addition to the PV5, Kia has confirmed plans to launch a PBV for taxi services, based on the Niro compact crossover. This move further underscores Kia’s commitment to expanding its EV lineup to meet various mobility needs.

Five Minutes With Hironao Yokomaku Of VeilSide

0

When Hironao Yokomaku began working at a French restaurant aged 16, little did he know how much he’d influence Japan’s car culture in the decades that followed.

Now aged 63, the Tsukuba-based tuner shows no signs of slowing down having just unveiled a new project alongside Fast & Furious actor Sung Kang unveiled at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon. Because for nearly four decades, Yokomaku-san has led the iconic Japanese tuning brand VeilSide.

DSC01634-Enhanced-NR

Many younger readers will be familiar with VeilSide’s work in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Almost 20 years on, Han’s orange and black Mazda RX-7 remains a poster car for the entire film franchise. But long before Hollywood thrust VeilSide into the spotlight, it had established itself as one of Japan’s most advanced tuners, building the country’s fastest cars with exteriors almost as loud as their exhausts. Something Speedhunters has covered in the past here.

DSC03257-Enhanced-NR

VeilSide’s distinctive look was originally inspired by the George Barris-designed 1960s Batmobile of all things – a car Yokomaku-san first set eyes on while visiting an amusement in Los Angeles. Now it’s synonymous with 1990s and ’00s Japanese car culture – think huge, sculpted rear wings and curved, ankle-breaking splitters.

DSC03315-Enhanced-NR

During this time, Yokomaku-san wanted to create cars that he felt were ‘complete’ packages, as opposed to focusing on a single element, as most Japanese tuners at the time were doing. But a VeilSide car needed blistering performance, sharpened handling, and bespoke aero before it could ever wear the hallowed ‘Fortune’ or ‘Combat’ name, depending on the level of work involved.

DSC03244-Enhanced-NR

The look didn’t just inspire other Japanese tuners; it even crossed continents, with VeilSide-style body kits being adapted on European cars during the Max Power era especially in the early 2000s. Everyone wanted a piece of the VeilSide pie. And while the good times felt like a perpetual party, the difficult times that followed brought the company to the brink of collapse.

Now, with VeilSide enjoying a resurgence in 2025, Yokomaku-san is keen to remind the world of VeilSide’s 35-year-long history.

DSC03303-Enhanced-NR

“At first, I started riding around on customised motorbikes, and of course, I thought mine was the fastest,” Yokomaku-san explains. ” But one day I raced against a machine with a fully tuned engine in a Nissan Bluebird and lost easily. That’s when I knew my tuning life had started. When I began driving at 18, I immediately got a job at a car shop to feed my obsession with speed.”

DSC03225-Enhanced-NR

Car tuning in the 1980s wasn’t exactly the behemoth it is today. As the owner of an S30 Nissan Fairlady Z set up for drag racing, Yokomaku-san tuned its engine by trial and error, leading to many rebuilds. By the age of 22, he’d honed his craft enough to establish his own business – Yokomaku Racing Service – working tirelessly to build the fastest S30 in Japan. His pièce de resistance was to turbocharge Nissan’s L-series engine, which immediately led to more victories while competing in zeroyon (0-400m) competitions. Then, a year later, he turned his attention towards the new Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R.

DSC03269-Enhanced-NR

At the age of 28, Yokomaku-san was beating established tuners in just about every discipline. Keen to showcase his skills beyond simply going fast, Yokomaku Racing Service became VeilSide – a name based on an English translation of his family name – ‘Yoko’ meaning side and ‘maku’ meaning veil.

DSC03246-Enhanced-NR

“Between 1990 and 1990, I set many Japanese records including top speed, drag racing and the fastest 0-300km/h time of 13.72 seconds in our R-1 Street Drag R32 Skyline GT-R,” Yokomaku-san adds. “Our cars were very distinctive, but also the fastest, so many requests for engine tuning came from owners across Japan. But before long, I was reminded of the dangers of tuning after frequent accidents in tuned cars occurred across Japan. I did not want this to happen, so I decided to create a car that could attract people’s attention without running at crazy speeds. After winning awards at Tokyo Auto Salon for many years, the VeilSide cars and look became very popular.”

DSC02056-Enhanced-NR

While the Tokyo Drift RX-7 might be VeilSide’s most recognised Fast & Furious car, the company’s aero kits have been present in every one of the franchise’s films since day one. Remember Dominic Toretto’s red Mazda RX-7 in the original movie? That’s Veilside. Oh, and Suki’s pink Honda S2000 from 2 Fast 2 Furious? Yes, that’s one too.

DSC03252-Enhanced-NR

Unfortunately for Yokomaku-san, this popularity led to an overwhelming demand, which left VeilSide unable to maintain supply. Before long, cheap replica kits flooded the international market, and as the tuning industry slumped in the mid-2000s, VeilSide found itself in a bad financial way.

“I wanted to create a car that could attract attention even while not running, which is where the idea for the Combat Supra came from” he explains. “I was honored to win the Complete Car Grand Prix at the 1993 Tokyo Auto Salon as well as the Dress-up Car Grand Prix and the Best Tuner Grand Prix. VeilSide‘s 3D-modelled aero parts became popular all over Japan. As a result of all of this, the supply could not keep up with the overwhelming demand. It was very difficult to increase the number of molds and staff to produce aero parts and increase supply to meet demand. We had also increased the number of product items such as aluminum wheels, mufflers, engine parts, and suspension too.”

DSC01972-Enhanced-NR

“During this time, VeilSide moved away from the spotlight with a focus on survival,” Yokomaku-san adds. “Many manufacturers went bankrupt and the custom industry was in a slump. VeilSide was also affected by the collapse of this bubble, as subcontractors went bankrupt one after another. It wasn’t until Tokyo Drift made a big impact all over the world that people began to remember VeilSide and expose a new generation to our designs. I first learned about the Nissan L-type engine at Yokomaku Racing Service, and then tuned GT-Rs and Supras with VeilSide before moving into the aero parts and appearing in films. To remind a new generation of car fans about VeilSide’s history was a good feeling.”

DSC03312-Enhanced-NR

With a final installment of the Fast and Furious franchise set to arrive in 2026, Yokomaku-san hopes his legacy will continue to inspire future generations after him.

“People ask me why i started VeilSide, and I think it was the many bitter experiences i faced as an enthusiast and tuner that led to the establishment of the brand. I had a vision that others did not offer, and it has been a privilege to make these dreams a reality through VeilSide. The future of custom car culture is always uncertain. But what I do know now at 63-years-old is that VeilSide makes cars for enthusiasts – whether that is a few or a lot. For this year’s Auto Salon, I created VeilSide78 based on the S30, which united my thoughts with Sung Kang. It was a very moving car filled with love that will remain part of VeilSide’s legacy. I would like to show the future of car making, where cars made with high-level technology, beautiful design, and a love for cars shared with customers will remain in their hearts forever as precious treasures. Because i am not getting any younger, but for the future, all I hope is VeilSide can continue to inspire the next generation of tuning fans, just like myself all those decades ago.”

2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Backcountry makes Sahara more capable

0

Jeep is adding a limited edition of the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid that adds capability to the mid-level Sahara grade.

The 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Backcountry is based on the Sahara, which is two steps up from the base Sport S trim level but not quite as off-road-capable as the Wrangler 4xe Rubicon.

Instead of the Sahara’s all-season tires, the Backcountry wears 275/55R20 General Grabber all-terrains. They’re still mounted to 20-inch wheels, but with a unique finish.

The Wrangler 4xe Backcountry receives front and rear steel bumpers, rock rails, a grille guard, and special-edition decals for the hood, fender, and tailgate. Like other 4xe models, the Backcountry is only available in four-door form, with a body-color hardtop.

2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Backcountry

Also included are some convenience and tech features normally optional on the Sahara grade, such as a front-view camera for off-road use, the towing package, a nine-speaker Alpine audio system, navigation, and an off-road trail guide app.

The Backcountry edition also gets the Jeep Power Box auxiliary power unit that was first available for the 2024 model year. It draws power from the 4xe’s 17-kwh battery pack, with dual 120-volt, 15-amp outlets to power small appliances and other electrical gadgets.

As before, the Wrangler 4xe powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter turbo-4 and a pair of electric motors, altogether sending 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission and mechanical four-wheel drive system. The 4xe provides an EPA-rated 21 miles of electric range, but just 20 mpg combined in hybrid mode.

At $66,185 (including $1,895 destination), the Backcountry edition costs about $7,000 more than the Wrangler 4xe Sahara grade on which it’s based. That’s a few grand more than the Wrangler 4xe Rubicon.

The Backcountry isn’t the only special-edition Wrangler for 2025. A Willys ’41 edition inspired by World War II Jeeps, also offered exclusively with the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain, joins the lineup. Other changes for the 2025 model year are light, and notably the Wrangler can still be had with either a manual transmission or a V-8 engine.

3 Things To Know About Dodge’s Hurricane Engine, Because Turbos Are Taking Over

0

Stellantis’ Hemi V8 engine is dead. Well not technically, but if you go looking for a sedan or muscle car powered by a V8, you won’t find it at Dodge or Chrysler. If it’s not a heavy-duty Ram pickup or special edition SRT Hellcat Durango or Jeep Wrangler 392, you can’t get a V8, and the engine isn’t long for this world in those trucks and SUVs either. Smaller displacement, turbocharged engines have made a comeback in recent years, and Stellantis has finally gotten in on it for its largest and best-selling products.

The pseudo-discontinuation of the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 saw the introduction of a new engine to replace it. Dubbed Hurricane, the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 is not only smaller but it’s more powerful and more efficient. But what makes this engine so unique? Read on to learn three things about Stellantis’ Hurricane inline-6 that make it special.

It’s smaller and more powerful than the Hemi V8

Work on what would become the Hurricane began way back in 2013 as a direct response to Ford’s EcoBoost engines, but it wasn’t introduced until 2022. It’s the first straight-six engine offered by an American automaker since GM’s Atlas I6 that was used in its GMT360 platform SUVs in the early 2000s, and Chrysler hadn’t offered one for years before that. The Hurricane engine is available in two power outputs: The standard version makes 420 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque, while a high-output version used in products like the Ram RHO and Jeep Grand Wagoneer makes as much as 550 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. That makes every version of the Hurricane more powerful than both the 5.7-liter and 6.4-liter versions of the Hemi V8, and thanks to turbocharging, it makes that power with less displacement.

While both the standard and high-output versions of the Hurricane share over 90 parts and are largely identical, the engines do have their own unique turbos. The standard variant gets a turbo with 22 psi of peak boost while the high-output Hurricane gets 26 psi of peak boost from its turbo. The engines also run on different fuel, with the standard output Hurricane requiring regular while the high-output needs premium.

Modern tech, vintage name

The Hurricane name actually has historical significance for Jeep, having been used on an inline-4 engine that powered the Willys CJ-3, CJ-5 and CJ-6 for over 20 years. Despite that historical name, nothing about the modern Hurricane engine is old. Stellantis used some cutting-edge tech to develop and build the engines, especially given their small size and big power. Take the Hurricane’s weight. Thanks in part to their lightweight cast aluminum block, both the standard and high-output versions of the engine weigh less than 500 pounds, with an 11-pound difference between the two (430 and 441 pounds respectively). Some surprisingly exotic solutions were also used for further weight savings. Plasma transfer wire arc technology is used to spray vaporized steel alloy onto the cylinder walls, something that has usually only been seen in high-performance engines like Ford’s flat-plane-crank Voodoo V8 in the Mustang Shelby GT350 and the Nissan’s VR38DETT twin-turbo V6 used in the GT-R.

The engine will make for an interesting muscle car

Dodge may have upset more than a few of its fans with the new Dodge Charger’s lack of a V8 engine. Fans don’t seem to be showing up to dealers for the electric version of Dodge’s new muscle car. If you’re one of those fans who want a muscle car with more power that isn’t electric, all you have to do is wait until later this year as Dodge is set to release the gas-powered version of the Charger. Called the Charger Six Pack, buyers will be able to get both versions of the Hurricane in the new muscle car. With either 420 or 550 horsepower, it should make things pretty interesting for the Charger on the performance front.

Consider that both versions of the inline-6 outpower the old Charger SXT, GT, R/T and Scat Pack trims, which were available with either a 292-hp 3.5-liter V6, a 370-hp 5.7-liter V8 or a 486-hp 6.4-liter Hemi V8. Despite that power, we’ll have to wait and see if buyers respond. Dodge fans were extremely loyal to the V8; the tire-shredding performance of the Scat Pack and Hellcat models were basically the Charger’s entire identity. And it seems that without that V8 engine, many have washed their hands of the brand. Shrugging off the brand may prove to be premature, though, as Dodge has created something unique with the six-cylinder Charger. The five-door model looks like it’ll be an American Kia Stinger thanks to its liftback rear end, and the Hurricane-powered models will still be rear-wheel drive, of course. If the performance of the Hurricane lives up to the engine’s power figures, Stellantis and Dodge specifically may have a new hit on its hands.

Next-gen Jeep Compass possibly delayed, powertrains evaluated

0

  • A new Jeep Compass offering gas and electric powertrains may be delayed
  • The crossover was last confirmed for launch in North America in 2026
  • A source allegedly said Jeep is reassessing whether the electric powertrain makes sense for North America

A redesigned Jeep Compass is currently scheduled to launch in North America in 2026, though that timeline may be pushed back.

A spokesperson for Jeep parent company Stellantis told Automotive News on Feb. 20 that all activity at the Brampton Assembly Plant in Canada has been put on hold as the company reevaluates its strategy for the new third-generation Compass. Production of the compact crossover was originally set to begin at the site next February, starting with an electric version, followed by a gasoline-powered model.

Production of the new Compass is also planned to begin this year at a plant in Melfi, Italy, though the spokesperson did not confirm whether production for other markets would be affected.

The spokesperson also did not specify how long the pause at Brampton will last or whether it will delay the North American launch of the Compass. However, a source told Automotive News that a decision on the model’s future is expected in March and that delays of eight months to a year are under consideration. The source also indicated that Jeep is evaluating whether an electric version of the Compass makes sense for the North American market.

Stellantis STLA Medium platform

Stellantis STLA Medium platform

The Brampton Assembly Plant last produced the Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, and Dodge Charger in 2023. It was being prepared to build models based on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform, starting with the new Compass. This platform is designed for electric vehicles in the compact and midsize segments but also supports gasoline and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Pre-production examples of the new Compass were initially set to start rolling off the line last month, but Jeep had already decided in October to delay this to May, the source said.

Many Stellantis brands have been adjusting their product plans following the resignation of CEO Carlos Tavares late last year, as well as shifting market dynamics favoring hybrids over fully electric vehicles—at least in North America. In December, Ram announced it would delay the launch of the electric 1500 REV to 2026, a year later than planned, prioritizing the 1500 Ramcharger series plug-in hybrid, which was originally scheduled to debut after the EV.

Additionally, the Trump administration’s threat of 25% tariffs on Canadian imports adds another layer of uncertainty to the situation.

Volvo Recalls 2025 EX90 Over Headlight Problem

Volvo Recalls 2025 EX90 Over Headlight Problem

According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Volvo has recalled 2,061 copies of its new EX90 electric SUV because of a headlight problem.

The EX90 has shutters that can close over its headlights. They’re not important to any safety function; they’re playful, allowing the car to “blink” on startup. However, Volvo says a software problem can cause the shutters to close while in motion, leaving the driver without illumination.

The fix is simple, and owners won’t need to bring cars to the dealership to receive it. Volvo will push out a software update to fix the problem over the air.

Under federal law, Volvo must notify owners of a safety recall through the mail. EX90 owners should expect a notice telling them that their car had a problem, but it has already been fixed.

As with all recall repairs, the fix was free. Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all with the news. Find out if your car has any outstanding recalls at our recall center.

2025 Polestar 3 Performance Pack, test drive, Madrid

While the software updates will be delivered over the air, the Orin chip will be integrated at the factory starting with the 2026 Polestar 3. The new chip provides greater computing power, enhancing processing speeds for software-based functions.

Polestar has confirmed that existing owners will be contacted to have their SUVs retrofitted with the new chip at no cost, following a strategy similar to that of its sister brand Volvo with the related EX90 electric midsize SUV.

Although Polestar has not yet announced pricing or availability for the 2026 Polestar 3, the 2025 model received a price reduction last November. Its starting price was lowered to $68,900, including a $1,400 destination charge—down from the initial $74,800 at launch.
